A hot wash followed by a high-heat dryer may tighten some denim, but it is not a dependable way to take every pair of jeans down a size. The result depends on the fabric and care instructions, and heat can affect the whole garment—not just its waist. Check the label first; for a waist-only or lasting fit change, a tailor is the more targeted option.
What the TikTok jeans-shrinking hack claims
The circulating advice is to wash jeans in hot water and dry them on high heat so the denim shrinks. TikTok Shop search results describe this as a possible, sometimes slight change that varies by pair. The page labels its content AI generated and potentially inaccurate, so it documents the viral claim rather than proving that the method works reliably.
Why heat is not a reliable way to size down ordinary jeans
Denim does not respond identically across garments, and the available sources provide no measured shrinkage percentage or controlled comparison of methods. Levi’s says most of its jeans are preshrunk and should experience little to no shrinkage when cared for according to their garment instructions. The company recommends cold washing and air drying to minimize shrinkage. Follow the care label for your specific pair rather than treating hot water and high heat as a guaranteed size adjustment.
Heat also does not offer a demonstrated way to shrink only the waistband. A wash-and-dry attempt may affect other parts of the fit, including the legs or length, so it is a poor match if your goal is a smaller waist without changing the rest of the jeans.

Check whether your jeans are raw Shrink-to-Fit denim
Levi’s distinguishes its raw Shrink-to-Fit jeans from its preshrunk styles: Shrink-to-Fit denim is not preshrunk and is designed to shrink and conform to the body over time. Levi’s gives product-specific care guidance for these jeans, so do not apply that guidance to ordinary denim.
For Levi’s Shrink-to-Fit jeans, the company describes soaking them in a warm bath for at least 30 minutes and keeping them on until dry. Its guidance gives different size allowances for machine washing and drying. Choose a method based on the fit change you need

When a tailor is the better choice
If the jeans fit everywhere except the waist, or you need a lasting and controlled change, ask a tailor about altering the waistband or seams. A DIY seam alteration can also work for someone comfortable sewing denim, but it requires skill and changes the garment structurally. Alteration is a separate choice from shrinking: it targets fit more directly than applying heat to the entire pair.

Before trying heat, check these points
- Read the garment’s care label and follow the maker’s instructions.
- Identify whether the jeans are preshrunk or raw Shrink-to-Fit denim.
- Decide whether you want the whole pair tighter or only the waist adjusted.
- Do not count on a particular amount of shrinkage: the available sources establish no reliable percentage.
