You can make a YouTube thumbnail in Canva without paying: start with Canva’s “YouTube Thumbnail” design type, customize a template, then download the result as a JPG or PNG. For a standard video, use a 16:9 canvas and check the downloaded file against YouTube’s upload limit for the device you’ll use.
Make a standard YouTube thumbnail in Canva
- Open Canva and choose the right canvas. Search for “YouTube Thumbnail” and select that design type. Canva identifies it as a 16:9 format. You can choose a template or begin with the blank canvas.
- Replace the template content. Use imagery and wording that accurately represent the video. Keep the composition simple: a viewer should be able to understand the subject quickly, and any text should remain easy to read when the thumbnail appears small. Avoid adding details that make the image crowded or imply content the video does not contain.
- Download the finished image. Export as JPG or PNG. Canva describes JPG as the smaller-file option and PNG as the high-quality option. After downloading, check the actual file size; the best format depends on the image and the upload limit that applies to your device.
Canva’s page gives 1280 × 720 pixels and a 2 MB maximum as general thumbnail guidance. YouTube’s current recommendations and device-specific limits differ, so use YouTube’s requirements below as the operative upload check rather than treating 2 MB as a universal cap.
Choose the right dimensions and file size
For a standard video thumbnail, use a 16:9 aspect ratio. YouTube currently recommends 3840 Ă— 2160 pixels and specifies a minimum width of 640 pixels. Its maximum file size for video thumbnails depends on where you upload: 2 MB on mobile and 50 MB on desktop. A file that works on desktop may therefore be too large for a mobile upload.

If your image exceeds the limit for the device you plan to use, export a JPG to reduce the file size, then inspect the result for visible quality loss. If the image is already a JPG, try a less detailed or smaller export if Canva offers that option. Check YouTube’s current upload requirements if its limits have changed.

Upload the image in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Open the video you want to update.
- Use the thumbnail upload control to select the JPG or PNG you downloaded from Canva.
- Save the change.
Custom thumbnail uploads require a verified YouTube account, and the image must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. A compliant file can still take time to appear after you save it. If it is not visible immediately, allow time for the change to show before replacing it again.
Standard video thumbnails and Shorts are different
Do not use the standard 16:9 workflow as if it were the Shorts workflow. YouTube’s current Help guidance recommends a 9:16 thumbnail for Shorts. It says custom Shorts thumbnails are currently added through YouTube Studio on a computer, and the account must be verified. Check the Shorts-specific controls in Studio rather than assuming the standard video upload path applies.

Can you do this for free?
Canva describes its thumbnail maker and templates as free to use, and the basic workflow is to customize a design and download it. That does not establish that every Canva template, image, or feature is free. If Canva marks an element or feature as paid, replace it with an available free option or remove it before exporting.
