To show a holding screen between videos in a YouTube livestream, create two scenes in OBS Studio: one with a VLC Video source playing your media playlist, and one with the holding screen. Switch to the holding-screen scene between clips, then switch back to the playlist scene. The cited OBS documentation supports scene switching, but does not establish an automatic holding-screen trigger at every playlist boundary, so treat this as a manual workflow unless you verify a compatible automation method separately.
Why a YouTube playlist is not the livestream
A YouTube watch playlist organizes uploaded videos for viewers; it does not send those videos as an encoder livestream. For a live broadcast built from local video files, OBS sends the feed to YouTube, and its VLC Video source can play a playlist of media files. You need VLC installed for that source to work. OBS Media Sources and YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describe these separate roles.
Set up a playlist scene and holding-screen scene in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. The OBS VLC Video source depends on VLC. For 64-bit OBS, OBS’s Media Sources guidance specifies 64-bit VLC.
- Create the playlist scene. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add the local files in the order you want them to play. Turn off Shuffle Playlist to preserve that order. Enable Loop Playlist only if you want the sequence to restart after the last file. OBS documents both controls, along with a Visibility Behaviour setting.
- Create the holding-screen scene. Add a still image, text, or other sources you want viewers to see while the playlist is paused between clips. OBS scenes can contain media and other sources; see the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Choose a transition. Set a cut or fade between the playlist and holding-screen scenes, according to the change you want viewers to see. OBS documents scene transitions in its Overview Guide.
- Switch scenes between videos. When a clip ends, select the holding-screen scene. When you are ready for the next clip, return to the playlist scene. The cited OBS materials explain scene switching and VLC playlist controls, but do not document a built-in automatic switch to a holding screen after each playlist item.
Connect OBS to YouTube and test the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe connecting an encoder with these details.
- Enter the server URL and stream key in OBS’s stream settings, then start the encoder.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and follow its prompt to go live. YouTube recommends testing and previewing the stream; its live streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes it as information entered into the encoder so YouTube can accept the feed.
Manual switching or automation?
Manual scene switching
This is the clearly documented approach: one scene plays the VLC playlist, another displays the holding screen, and you choose when to switch. It requires an operator to watch the playlist and act at the appropriate points.
Automatic interstitials
Automatic switching could reduce operator work, but the official OBS sources cited here do not verify a per-item trigger that displays a holding screen between VLC playlist videos. Do not assume that enabling playlist loop or changing Visibility Behaviour creates that interstitial. If you need automation, verify a specific method and its compatibility with your current OBS and VLC versions before relying on it for a broadcast.

Troubleshooting
- The VLC Video source is missing or unavailable: Install VLC, making sure its architecture matches OBS; OBS’s guidance calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- Videos play in the wrong order: Check the file order in the VLC Video source and turn off Shuffle Playlist.
- The playlist does not restart after its last item: Enable Loop Playlist if you want it to repeat. If you want it to stop instead, leave looping off.
- The holding screen never appears by itself: The documented workflow requires you to switch scenes manually. The cited sources do not establish automatic interstitials at playlist boundaries.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Confirm that OBS has the correct server URL and stream key from the selected stream in YouTube Studio, then check the Live Control Room preview.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Treat it as private encoder access information and replace or reset it through YouTube Studio if someone else may have obtained it.
