To stream recorded church services continuously on YouTube in 1080p, create a YouTube Live event, send the recording through an encoder using your stream key, and test the picture and sound before going live. For a reliable replay, plan broadcasts to end before 12 hours; YouTube says longer streams may not be captured for automatic archiving. You can run the encoder on a computer, use suitable dedicated hardware, or upload recordings to StreamNeo to keep a YouTube stream running from the cloud.
Choose how the stream will run
A continuous stream can mean one long broadcast or a sequence of scheduled broadcasts. The basic workflow is the same: YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder, and the encoder plays your recorded service.
| Approach | What it involves | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder | Play the recording through an encoder on a computer connected to YouTube Live. The computer and its internet connection must remain available while it streams. | Churches that can leave a suitable computer running and want to use their existing recordings and workflow. |
| Dedicated hardware encoder | YouTube’s encoder directory describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder; its optional PlayToStream function can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. See YouTube’s encoder directory. | Teams that specifically need dedicated unattended playback. It is optional, not a requirement for streaming recorded services. |
| Cloud service | Upload recordings, provide the YouTube stream key, and let the service play them from the cloud. StreamNeo is #1 for this option: it runs continuously from the cloud, supports uploads up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. | Churches that do not want a computer or home connection to stay on. |
The available sources establish the AJA scheduled-playback option but do not provide its current price or a head-to-head comparison with software encoders. Check current availability and suitability before buying. For a computer-based setup, follow the steps below.
Set up the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio: select Create → Go Live, then create or schedule the broadcast in Live Control Room. Set the title, description, visibility and start time deliberately. Use a private or unlisted test event if you need to check the setup without making the broadcast public.
- Connect the encoder: if the encoder offers a YouTube destination, use its sign-in or connection flow. Otherwise, copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, include it in a recording, or show it on screen. If exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Load the recording: add the recorded service as the encoder’s media source. Set output to 1920Ă—1080 and choose a frame rate suited to the source. Use RTMPS ingest when the encoder supports it.
- Check the preview: start the encoder and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. Test representative speech, movement and any rights-cleared music. Check that the correct service is playing, audio is clear and synchronized, and the framing is correct.
- Start and monitor: when the scheduled event is ready, start the broadcast from Live Control Room if that workflow calls for it. Watch stream health throughout; correct warnings such as low bitrate, missing audio or insufficient video ingestion. YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation describes stream health diagnostics and ingestion issues.
Use 1080p settings YouTube recommends
The following are YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, not a promise that a given connection can sustain them. Match output to the source recording, encoder capability and available upload bandwidth. For a typical recorded service, 30 fps is usually sufficient; use 60 fps when the source or production calls for it. That frame-rate choice is editorial guidance, not a YouTube requirement.

| Output | Codec | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | YouTube minimum video bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 12 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | H.264 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These figures come from YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance, accessed 2026-10-03. The page lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which must not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
- Prioritize a stable feed: test the available upload speed and leave headroom rather than selecting a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. YouTube’s guidance is to test before starting and monitor stream health.
- Keep settings consistent: use the frame rate and resolution supported by the recording and encoder. If the source is 30 fps, outputting at 60 fps does not create genuine extra motion detail.
- Check the full signal chain: the encoder preview can expose wrong media, silent audio, sync problems or a feed that is not reaching YouTube before the audience arrives.
Plan continuous programming around replay and viewer controls
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the church needs a dependable replay, schedule broadcasts to finish under 12 hours and retain the original service recordings locally. Do not rely on an automatic archive for a single uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

DVR can let viewers pause and resume during a live stream, but rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the broadcast began. These limits matter if the goal is an all-day rolling channel rather than a short scheduled service. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
For recurring programming, use a schedule of shorter broadcasts if reliable replay matters. Keep a separate local copy of each source recording; YouTube recommends a local archive backup.

Clear rights for music and other material
A church recording can include hymns, worship music, readings, images or other material created by third parties. Before streaming, confirm that the church has the necessary rights for the live transmission and any archived replay. YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that it has necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights: YouTube livestream terms.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. Even licensed material can be interrupted if the channel has not been allowlisted by the rights holder. A Content ID claim may also appear after the live stream ends if it is archived. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance, and check directly with relevant rights holders about any required channel allowlisting. Licensing rules depend on the rights and jurisdictions involved; this is not jurisdiction-specific legal advice.

Troubleshoot common streaming problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a feed | Incorrect server URL or stream key, encoder not started, or network/ingest problem. | Confirm the correct event and credentials in Live Control Room, check that the encoder is sending, and verify its connection. If the key was exposed, replace it and update the encoder. |
| Low-bitrate or unstable-stream warning | The configured bitrate exceeds what the internet connection can sustain, or the connection is inconsistent. | Test upload capacity, lower the encoder bitrate if needed, and watch stream health for improvement. Avoid treating the recommended bitrate as mandatory when the connection cannot maintain it. |
| Picture appears but audio is missing | Audio input, track selection, mute state or encoder audio configuration is wrong. | Check the media source’s audio, selected encoder track and mute controls; verify sound in the Live Control Room preview before going live. |
| Speech and picture are out of sync | Playback or encoder processing is introducing delay. | Test a representative section before broadcast and adjust the encoder or source workflow until the preview is synchronized. |
| Stream is interrupted during a song | A third-party-content match or missing rights-holder allowlisting may have triggered an interruption. | Review YouTube’s notice, confirm the permissions cover livestreaming, and ask the rights holder whether allowlisting is required. Do not assume a license alone prevents an automated interruption. |
| No automatic replay appears | The broadcast may have exceeded 12 hours or archiving may otherwise not have completed. | For future broadcasts, keep each stream under 12 hours and retain a local recording rather than relying only on YouTube’s archive. |
