On Linux, use a boot-enabled systemd service to launch FFmpeg after reboot, and configure FFmpeg to loop your playlist. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the stream key, server URL, and auto-start setting. These steps can restart the encoder and begin the playlist again; they do not guarantee that YouTube will resume the same broadcast or that FFmpeg will pick up at the exact item it was playing. Test the complete setup with an unlisted stream before relying on it.
Know what a reboot can—and cannot—restore
There are two separate recovery goals:
- Restart the encoder and playlist: a Linux service starts FFmpeg again after boot, and FFmpeg’s input configuration loops the media. A fresh FFmpeg process may start at the beginning of the playlist unless you have separately implemented and verified playback-position persistence.
- Resume the same YouTube broadcast and watch page: this depends on YouTube Live behavior and stream settings. YouTube’s guidance explains starting and stopping encoder streams, but does not promise that a reboot will reconnect to the same broadcast. Treat this as unconfirmed until you test the settings and channel you intend to use.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive statement, not a guarantee that a stream will recover after a reboot or a recommended duration for an unattended broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance.
Prepare the YouTube stream and FFmpeg command
Check the stream key and ingest URL
In YouTube Live Control Room, open the settings for the stream and use its server URL and stream key in your encoder configuration. YouTube describes stream keys as credentials that tell the encoder where to send the feed and allow YouTube to accept it. Keep the key private: do not commit it to a public repository, expose it in a public service file, or print it in logs. See Manage live stream settings.
Make the media input loop
Configure FFmpeg’s input to repeat according to the format of your playlist. One common implementation uses FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with a file list, but the exact command and loop option depend on how your files and playlist are arranged. Confirm that your known-good command can read every file and loop continuously before putting it under service management. A community example of FFmpeg playlists managed by systemd is available in this implementation repository; it is an example, not a universal or official YouTube configuration.

Keep the command and playlist in locations readable by the Linux account that will run the service. If your playlist references local files, ensure those paths remain available after reboot and are not dependent on a temporary mount that comes up later.
Run FFmpeg automatically with systemd
- Run the command manually first. Start FFmpeg as the intended non-root service account, using the final playlist and YouTube stream settings. Confirm that it reads the media and sends a valid feed before automating startup.
- Create a service unit. Define a
systemdservice that runs the known-good FFmpeg command as that account. Set a restart policy such asRestart=alwaysand a suitable restart delay for your host. The exact unit file can vary by distribution, paths, account, and command; do not copy an example without adapting and testing it. - Enable the service at boot. Enable the unit so systemd starts it when the machine boots. Confirm the service is enabled and that its command, working directory, permissions, and media paths are correct.
- Configure YouTube auto-start as needed. In Live Control Room, check the stream’s auto-start option if you expect the incoming encoder feed to start the broadcast. Do not assume the setting is enabled. YouTube describes auto-start and auto-stop as allowing the creator to start or stop streaming from the encoder; this does not establish guaranteed same-broadcast recovery after reboot. - Test a real reboot. Use an unlisted or staging stream. Reboot the host and verify the service starts, FFmpeg makes progress, YouTube receives the feed, and the expected playlist item plays. Separately check whether the broadcast and watch page behave as you require.
Verify the reboot path before depending on it
Check both the Linux side and YouTube’s side; a running process alone is not proof that viewers can see a recovered stream.

- Service state and logs: confirm systemd started the unit and inspect its logs for permission errors, missing files, invalid options, or connection failures.
- FFmpeg progress: make sure the process is advancing through the media rather than exiting or repeatedly failing to open an input.
- YouTube preview and stream health: check the Live Control Room preview and health indicators. YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance.
- Playlist behavior: observe whether the stream starts at the beginning or continues at a saved position. Do not assume position persistence unless you have implemented and tested it.
- Broadcast identity: confirm whether YouTube continues the intended broadcast or creates a different live session. The encoder’s successful restart does not, by itself, prove that the same watch page resumed.
Troubleshoot common restart failures
The service does not start after boot
Check that the unit is enabled, its executable and file paths are correct, and the service account can read the playlist and media. Review systemd logs for the first startup error. If a required mount or network resource is unavailable when the unit starts, adjust service ordering and then repeat the reboot test.
FFmpeg starts but cannot connect to YouTube
Verify that the stream key and server URL match the intended stream and have not been changed or revoked. Treat the key as a credential. Check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance for configuration or connection errors: Troubleshoot live streaming.

The encoder reconnects but the broadcast does not behave as expected
Check the stream’s auto-start setting and inspect the Live Control Room state. YouTube documents encoder start and stop behavior, but not a universal guarantee that a host reboot resumes the same event. Validate the behavior for your selected stream settings and channel with an unlisted test.
The stream comes back at the wrong playlist item
A newly launched FFmpeg process can begin from the playlist’s start. If resuming a particular position matters, you need separate position-persistence logic and a test showing that it survives the failure modes you care about; a looping playlist alone does not provide that guarantee.

Choose between self-managed Linux and a cloud playlist service
A self-managed host gives you control over the FFmpeg process and local media, but you are responsible for the Linux service, storage, credentials, and recovery checks.
