Choose a target based on YouTube’s guidance for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test it against your sustained upload capacity. A lower bitrate reduces bandwidth demand, but it can also reduce picture quality and does not guarantee a stable stream.
How do I lower the bitrate in AWS Elemental MediaLive?
- Identify the exact MediaLive video output that feeds YouTube. Note its codec, resolution, and frame rate; the appropriate target depends on all three.
- Open that output’s video Stream settings, expand Codec settings, and find Rate control.
- For a predictable live-ingest rate, choose CBR and enter the target in the Bitrate field. AWS says CBR is the default mode; if its Bitrate field is empty, MediaLive defaults to 5 Mbps. That default is not necessarily right for your YouTube resolution or frame rate. AWS Elemental MediaLive User Guide
- Save the output configuration and run a representative test before relying on the setting for a live event.
Make sure you are changing the video bitrate for the output sent to YouTube, not a different output in the channel. If you are not using CBR, the relevant controls and resulting rate behavior differ.
What bitrate should I use for YouTube Live?
There is no single correct bitrate for every stream. YouTube’s H.264 live-encoder guidance lists the following minimum and recommended video bitrates. Use the row matching your output resolution and frame rate; for other combinations or codecs, consult the corresponding row in YouTube’s table.
| H.264 output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are the figures in YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance; the page does not state a publication year. The minimum is not a promise of good-looking video or trouble-free delivery. Use YouTube’s recommended figure as a starting point when the connection can sustain it, then evaluate the actual stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why is my YouTube stream unstable?
A configured bitrate that exceeds the connection’s sustained upload capacity can contribute to dropped frames or ingest problems. A speed test helps estimate capacity, but conditions can vary during a broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before an event with representative audio and motion, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. It also recommends RTMPS for YouTube Live. See YouTube’s encoder and connection guidance.
- Compare sustained capacity with the output rate. If the connection cannot reliably carry the configured rate, lowering the bitrate may help reduce demand.
- Test realistic content. Use the same resolution, frame rate, audio, and kind of movement expected during the event. A static test image may not reveal how complex scenes behave.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages. They provide feedback during the test and live event; do not assume that a saved MediaLive setting alone confirms a healthy ingest.
Lowering bitrate is a trade-off, not a universal fix. AWS notes: “When encoding visually complex video (such as high-motion sports events with brightly dressed crowds in the background), there is always a trade-off between high video quality and low bitrate.” AWS Elemental MediaLive User Guide

Should I lower resolution or bitrate?
First compare the bitrate for your current resolution and frame rate with YouTube’s applicable guidance and the connection’s sustained upload capacity. If the rate needed for the chosen output cannot be carried reliably, lowering bitrate may reduce demand but can make the picture softer or less detailed. Lowering resolution is another possible adjustment, but it changes the delivered image dimensions; choose a lower resolution only if that visual trade-off suits the program. Test the revised output with representative footage rather than assuming either change will solve instability.
CBR, QVBR, and VBR: which rate-control mode?
| Mode | How the rate behaves | Consideration for YouTube ingest |
|---|---|---|
| CBR | Uses the configured Bitrate value for a predictable output rate. | Most directly matches YouTube’s stated recommendation for CBR live encoding. |
| QVBR | Targets a specified or inferred quality and uses the bitrate needed, bounded by Max bitrate. Rate can vary frame by frame; it does not maintain an average bitrate. | Confirm compatibility with your YouTube workflow and observe actual ingest behavior rather than assuming it behaves like CBR. |
| VBR | Uses an average bitrate and a maximum; rate varies with scene complexity and may peak briefly up to the maximum. | Can accommodate brief complexity spikes, but is less directly aligned with YouTube’s CBR recommendation. |
For a predictable target when diagnosing bandwidth pressure, CBR makes the configured rate easiest to compare with available capacity. QVBR and VBR vary their rates, so consider their behavior and maximums when assessing the connection.

Can enhanced VQ improve H.264 quality at a lower bitrate?
AWS offers enhanced VQ as an optional H.264 mode usable with CBR or QVBR. AWS says it can improve quality without increasing bitrate and describes reducing bitrate by perhaps 5% while maintaining original target quality as one possible use. That is general AWS guidance, not a guaranteed result for a particular program or scene. The guide also says enhanced VQ can help smooth complex high-motion transitions. Test the result with your own content before relying on a lower target.

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded videos rather than a camera-based live production, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It is not a replacement for configuring a MediaLive encoder for a live camera feed.
