How to Loop Videos on YouTube Live While Keeping Your Stream Key Private

Use OBS Media Source for one looping file or VLC Video for a playlist, then connect OBS to YouTube Live and protect the stream key like a password.

To loop a video on YouTube Live, add it as an OBS Media Source, enable Loop, and send OBS’s output to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. For multiple files, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. Keep the stream key private: YouTube describes it as your stream’s “password and address.” A loop repeats the media; it does not keep a broadcast running if the encoder stops.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s guidance says channels must be verified, have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by a creator at least 16 years old. Check current eligibility in YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
  • OBS Studio and a local video file you are authorized to broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the moment you intend to go live. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  • For a playlist, VLC installed on the computer. OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for the VLC Video source.

You do not need a capture card or hardware encoder just to loop a local file. OBS can use a local Media Source; YouTube also supports encoder software as a way to send a live feed.

Loop one video in OBS

  1. Create a scene: In OBS, add or select a scene for the broadcast.
  2. Add the file: In the Sources box, select + > Media Source. Name the source if desired, then select OK.
  3. Choose the video and enable looping: In the Media Source properties, select Browse and choose the local video file. Turn on Loop, then select OK. OBS’s Loop option restarts the file after it finishes and is off by default. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
  4. Check the scene: Confirm the video appears in the preview and is framed as you want. If it is not visible, select the source and adjust its size or position in the preview.

When playback reaches the end, OBS starts the file again. That is a playback loop, not a broadcast-recovery feature: YouTube receives the feed from OBS, so the computer and encoder must remain running for the stream to continue.

Loop a playlist instead of one file

  1. Install VLC, matching OBS’s architecture. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
  2. In OBS, select + in Sources and choose VLC Video.
  3. Add the media files to the playlist in the source properties.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist, then confirm the source and playlist play correctly in the preview.

Use Media Source when you need one file to repeat. Use VLC Video when you need a sequence of files to play in turn and repeat. The VLC approach adds a software dependency; the single-file Media Source does not require VLC.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Create or select a stream: In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to reach the Live Control Room, then create or select the stream.
  2. Copy the connection details: In the stream’s Stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter these values in the encoder’s stream settings.
  3. Enter them in OBS: Open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key. If OBS presents a server or stream URL field for your selected service configuration, use the URL shown by YouTube. Do not put the key in a scene, overlay, title, description, or other visible content.
  4. Set the stream’s visibility and metadata: In YouTube Studio, select the intended visibility—Public, Unlisted, or Private—and review the title, description, audience, and other stream settings before broadcasting. Visibility is separate from key secrecy. YouTube notes that the default visibility differs by age: users aged 13–17 default to Private, while adults 18 or older default to Public.
  5. Start and verify: In OBS, select Start Streaming. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then select Go live there. Verify the stream is visible at the intended setting and that the video is looping.

YouTube’s basic encoder workflow uses an encoder such as OBS to send the feed. HLS is an optional protocol with different requirements and higher latency than RTMP; it is not needed for this basic loop setup.

Protect or reset the stream key

A stream key is a credential, not a public stream link. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Anyone who obtains it could potentially send a feed to your stream.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Keep it out of view: Paste it only into the encoder’s stream-key field. Do not show that field or the key in a screen recording, screenshot, public post, or the live output. This is a practical security precaution based on YouTube’s description of the key as a password-like credential.
  • Restrict channel access: Give channel administrative access only to people you trust, as YouTube recommends in its live-streaming safety tips.
  • Reset a possibly exposed key: In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open Stream and reset the key. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset it. Then replace the old key in OBS before streaming again. The old key should no longer be used.
  • Review reused settings: A custom stream key can be reused. Reusing stream settings also carries over the prior stream’s metadata, settings, and key, so check the visibility and metadata before starting a new broadcast.

Changing a stream’s visibility does not secure an exposed key, and keeping the key secret does not make a Public stream private. Treat those as separate checks.

Check rights, visibility, and archive limits

Broadcast only media you are authorized to use

Before looping a documentary, soundtrack, trailer, or other recording, confirm that your channel has the rights or permission needed for the video and audio. YouTube’s stream settings guidance specifically reminds creators to ensure they have rights to trailers; that is not a determination that any particular file is cleared for broadcast. Repeating a file does not change its copyright status.

Choose the audience deliberately

Public, Unlisted, and Private are YouTube visibility options. Choose the one that matches how you want viewers to find or access the stream; do not rely on an obscure or unlisted link as a substitute for keeping the stream key confidential.

Plan a recording backup for long broadcasts

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a recording, keep a local archive as YouTube recommends rather than relying on the automatic archive. A local backup also protects you if a stream or archive is interrupted.

Keep the broadcast running: OBS versus cloud looping

With OBS, the playback loop runs on the computer sending the feed. If that computer, OBS, or its internet connection stops, the local loop alone cannot keep YouTube receiving video.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The video plays once and stops Loop is off or the wrong source is configured. Open Media Source properties and turn on Loop. For a playlist, confirm Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source.
The VLC playlist source is missing or will not load VLC is not installed or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS, then restart OBS and recheck the VLC Video source.
YouTube does not receive the stream The stream URL or key may be missing, incorrect, or no longer valid. Compare OBS’s Stream settings with the current values in YouTube Studio’s Stream settings. If the key may have been exposed or reset, replace it in OBS.
OBS says it is streaming, but the scheduled broadcast has not started The scheduled stream may still be waiting for the Live Control Room step. Wait for the preview, then select Go live in the Live Control Room.
The broadcast stops when you leave or shut down the computer OBS is running the loop locally; it cannot send a feed after the computer or its connection stops. Keep the computer, OBS, and network connection running for a DIY setup, or use a cloud service if you need the computer off.
The stream is not discoverable or viewers cannot access it The stream’s visibility may be Private or Unlisted. Review the visibility in YouTube Studio separately from the stream-key security settings.
A long stream has no automatic archive It exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold; streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording backup when the archive matters.

Costs and practical trade-offs

The OBS method uses software and hardware you already have, but the computer and internet connection must stay available for the length of the stream. A local recording backup may also need storage. Cloud looping shifts playback and delivery away from the home computer; compare the recurring service cost with the time and equipment you would otherwise keep running. StreamNeo offers daily, weekly, monthly, six-month, and yearly durations on the same product; see current StreamNeo plans for the regionally displayed prices.
