For a repeating sequence of recorded lectures, add the files to an OBS VLC Video source and leave Loop Playlist enabled. That makes OBS restart the playlist when it reaches the end; it does not guarantee a gap-free transition between every video. First identify whether the black frame appears between playlist items or during a scene change, because those are different problems.
Set up a looping lecture playlist
- In OBS, open the scene where the lectures should appear. In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video.
- Open the source properties and add the lecture files to its playlist. Arrange them in the order you want them to play.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled if playback should start again with the first lecture after the last one finishes. OBS documents this setting as On by default.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off to keep the lectures in order. OBS documents this setting as Off by default.
- Check Visibility Behaviour. OBS offers options to continue, pause, or stop playback when the source is hidden. The documented default is Stop when not visible, restart when visible.
The OBS guide describes VLC Video and Media Sources. If VLC Video is missing from the source list, install VLC. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Identify when the black screen appears
Between two videos in the playlist
Use VLC Video with Loop Playlist enabled as the first configuration to try. OBS documents playlist looping, but does not promise seamless playback at each file boundary. An OBS forum user reported that enabling Loop Playlist stopped a blink in their setup; that report is not a guarantee for other systems or files.
If the gap remains, the available documentation does not establish whether the cause is the files’ encoding, their final frames, or machine performance. The playlist loop setting is a practical test, not a universal fix.

During a scene switch or fade
Treat a black frame during a scene transition separately from a gap between playlist items. Check whether the source is stopping or restarting when it becomes visible. In a forum discussion about a black frame during a scene fade, a respondent suggested that restarting on activation could leave the source black until playback begins, and proposed turning that behavior off for the source being transitioned to. This is a troubleshooting hypothesis for that scene-transition case, not a confirmed explanation for every black frame. See the OBS scene-transition discussion.
VLC Video is unavailable
Install VLC with the same architecture as OBS. In particular, OBS’s guidance specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.

VLC Video or Media Source?
Choose the source based on whether you need a playlist or just one recording.

These settings are not interchangeable: Media Source’s file-loop option does not control a multi-file playlist. The source behavior and defaults above are listed in the OBS media sources guide.

What to check if the gap persists
- Confirm the symptom: note whether the frame appears at a file boundary or while changing scenes. Apply playlist checks to the first case and activation/visibility checks to the second.
- Check the playlist settings: make sure all intended files are present, the order is correct, Loop Playlist is enabled, and Shuffle Playlist is off if order matters.
- Check visibility behavior: if the source is hidden during a scene change, confirm whether it should stop, pause, or continue, and whether it should restart when visible.
- Do not assume a single cause: the documented settings explain how sources loop and react to visibility, but do not identify a universal cause for a black frame at file boundaries.
