To repeat an MP4 indefinitely in FFmpeg, put -stream_loop -1 before the input it applies to: ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv OUTPUT_URL. This is an illustrative continuous-output command, not a universal recipe: replace the destination, container and codecs with values supported by your target. The loop option repeats the input; it does not guarantee a black-screen-free transition.
Loop an MP4 input indefinitely
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as the number of times an input stream is looped: 0 means no repeat and -1 means repeat indefinitely. It is an input option, so put it before the -i for the file you want to repeat. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, which makes placement significant. FFmpeg command-line documentation
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv OUTPUT_URL
This example encodes video with H.264 and audio with AAC, then writes an FLV-format output. It is illustrative rather than destination-ready: use the container, codecs and output destination required by your player or streaming endpoint. Do not assume every endpoint accepts this combination.
Check the option order and input
- Place
-stream_loop -1before the-ibelonging to the MP4 you intend to loop. - Make sure that file is the whole input you want repeated. The option does not mean “loop only the visible video” if the input contains other streams.
- Use an output destination and format that your intended player or streaming service supports.
Make a finite repeated file instead
An infinite input loop does not specify a finite output duration. If you need a saved file that ends, decide how many repeats or how much runtime you want, use an appropriate finite loop count or duration, and verify the resulting file. The command-line documentation describes loop counts, but does not provide a complete finite-MP4 recipe for every use case; the right output settings depend on your source and intended playback.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why a black screen can appear at the join
-stream_loop repeats an input; FFmpeg does not document it as a filter that removes black frames or guarantees a seamless transition. The cause depends on the actual MP4, its opening and closing frames, stream timestamps, whether packets are copied or encoded, output-container behavior, and the player or streaming client. Without the file and the exact command, no single cause can be established.
Diagnose the boundary in order
- Inspect the source endpoints. Look at the last visible frames and the first visible frames of the MP4. If either end contains black video, that material will recur at each loop boundary.
- Check for stream copy. If your command uses
-c copy, FFmpeg copies packets without decoding, filtering or encoding. A video filter cannot be applied to that copied stream. If the copied output has a poor join, compare it with a re-encoded test; re-encoding is a diagnostic, not a guarantee of a clean boundary. FFmpeg documentation on stream copy - Verify option placement. Confirm
-stream_loop -1precedes the relevant-iand applies to the input you mean to repeat. FFmpeg command-line documentation - Test the actual playback path. Open the resulting output in the intended player or send it to the intended destination. A transition seen only in one client cannot be diagnosed from the FFmpeg option description alone.
Whole-file looping is different from looping frames
Use -stream_loop when the whole input stream or file should recur. FFmpeg’s separate loop video filter repeats a buffered range of frames; it is for frame-level effects, not a substitute for replaying an entire MP4. For example, the documented filter expression loop=loop=-1:size=1:start=0 infinitely repeats the first frame, producing a frozen-frame effect rather than a whole-video loop. Check your installed FFmpeg version
FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly and may describe a version newer than the one installed on your system. Check the installed build with ffmpeg -version; if an option behaves differently or appears unavailable, consult that version’s local help and documentation. FFmpeg documentation index
