To repeat a video while your YouTube broadcast stays live, enable Loop in the OBS Media Source properties and leave OBS’s outgoing stream running. For several clips, use a VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. These controls repeat playback inside OBS; they are separate from stopping the encoder stream.
Loop one video in OBS
- In the OBS Sources dock, click + and choose Media Source. Sources are added to scenes in OBS. OBS Sources Guide.
- In the source properties, select the local video file.
- Check Loop. OBS documents this setting as replaying the file when playback completes. OBS Media Sources.
- Confirm the source is present and visible in the scene being sent to YouTube.
- Leave the OBS streaming session running. The loop repeats the media file; it does not restart the outgoing broadcast.
Loop a playlist of videos
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC; for 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video Source in the OBS Sources dock and add the local files to its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback starts again after the playlist runs out of media.
- Choose the source’s visibility behavior. OBS offers options to continue, pause, or stop playback while the source is not visible. This setting controls playback of the source, not whether the OBS application window is visible. OBS Media Sources.
Choose the right OBS source

Keep the YouTube broadcast running
YouTube’s encoder instructions say to end a stream by stopping content from the encoder. That is different from letting an OBS media source reach the end of its file and play it again. Do not click Stop Streaming or stop sending encoder content if your aim is to keep the broadcast active. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
YouTube also documents auto-start and auto-stop settings that can start or stop streaming when you start or stop the encoder. Check your live stream settings if those behaviors matter to your setup. YouTube: Manage live stream settings.
Test before relying on the loop live
The source loop and the outgoing encoder stream have separate controls, but OBS and YouTube do not promise that every live scene or source edit will look seamless. Test the specific file, playlist, scene, and visibility behavior before relying on them in a live production. OBS’s overview guide recommends testing stream setups. OBS Studio Overview Guide.
