How to Loop a 10-Hour Rain Video in OBS for YouTube Live

Add your rain file as an OBS Media Source, enable Loop, connect YouTube with your stream key, and test the feed, bitrate, audio, and recording backup before going live.

To loop a 10-hour rain video in OBS, add it to a scene as a Media Source, open that source’s properties, and enable Loop. Connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then test the preview, sound, and stream health before making the broadcast public. Ten hours is below YouTube’s stated 12-hour automatic-archive threshold, but keep a local recording as backup.

Set up the rain video as a looping source

  1. Create a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes dock to add or select the scene for the broadcast.
  2. Add the file. In the Sources dock, click the plus button and choose Media Source. Select the local rain video file. OBS documents Media Source as the built-in option for adding video and other media files to a scene (OBS Project: Media Sources).
  3. Turn on Loop. Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. OBS describes this option as making the file play again after playback completes; it restarts the video at the end rather than changing or lengthening the file (OBS Project: Media Sources).
  4. Check framing and audio. Fit or position the source in the canvas as needed. If the video contains rain audio, confirm that the relevant OBS mixer meter moves during playback. Check that the intended audio is included and that no unwanted desktop or microphone sound is being captured. OBS’s Quick Start guide recommends checking mixer meters and testing settings before streaming (OBS Project: Quick Start Guide).

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s stream settings. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube if using the integrated service option, or enter the server URL and key as appropriate. YouTube explains that the key identifies where the encoder sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it (YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming).
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it on screen or share it; if it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting.
  4. Start a short private or unlisted test where practical. Inspect the Live Control Room preview, verify both picture and sound, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages before the public event. OBS recommends testing for a few minutes, and YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health (OBS Project: Quick Start Guide; YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming).

Choose resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain

Use the source’s actual quality as a guide: a clean 1080p file can be streamed at 1080p, while a 720p source generally gains little from being enlarged. For YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations checked on October 3, 2026, the bitrate ranges are 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3–8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain the broadcast (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming).

Output choice YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate When it may fit
720p at 30 fps 3–8 Mbps (YouTube guidance checked October 3, 2026) A lower-bandwidth option or a source that is only 720p.
1080p at 30 fps 5–14 Mbps (YouTube guidance checked October 3, 2026) A sharper option when the file and sustained upload capacity support it.

For the RTMP/RTMPS encoder setup, YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not above four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS. The encoder guidance checked October 3, 2026 lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS and frame rates up to 60 fps; the bitrate ranges above are specifically its H.264 recommendations (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming).

Run an upload-speed test under conditions similar to the broadcast and leave capacity for normal network variation. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% headroom beyond the stream bitrate. A shared or unstable connection may need a lower bitrate even if its best speed-test result appears sufficient (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming; YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming).

Keep an archive and confirm you can use the recording

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a 10-hour broadcast is below that stated threshold. YouTube also warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all,” and recommends making a local archive (YouTube Help: Archive live streams). If preserving the full broadcast matters, enable local recording in OBS before going live and check that the recording file is growing. This also gives you a backup if the platform archive is unavailable.

Confirm you have permission to use both the rain video and its audio. A looping broadcast does not change the copyright status of the underlying footage or sound, and the OBS and YouTube setup instructions cannot establish rights for a particular file. Review YouTube’s guidance and the relevant licenses before streaming.

Use a playlist only if you want multiple clips

For one 10-hour file, Media Source with Loop is the direct, simpler option. If you intentionally want several clips to play in sequence, OBS also documents VLC Video, a playlist-capable source with a Loop Playlist option. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC (OBS Project: Media Sources).

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The video stops at the end: Reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is checked on the source that is actually in the scene.
  • YouTube receives no feed: Check that OBS is using the current stream URL and key for the selected YouTube stream. Verify the service or server setting, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages.
  • Rain audio is missing: Confirm the media file has an audio track, check the OBS mixer meter during playback, and ensure the source is not muted. Test the output in the YouTube preview rather than relying only on the local OBS meter.
  • The stream drops frames or reports connection problems: Reduce output bitrate or resolution, check that the upload connection has the recommended headroom, and test again. YouTube’s bitrate ranges are guidance rather than a network-capacity guarantee.
  • The broadcast archive is incomplete or absent: Check the local OBS recording. YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; do not rely on the platform archive as the only copy.
