To live stream on YouTube, choose a phone, webcam, encoder, or console workflow; make sure your channel is eligible; then create a stream in YouTube Studio and check its preview before broadcasting. For an encoder stream, copy the stream URL and private stream key from Live Control Room into your encoder. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection for most creators; if you set them manually, match the bitrate to your codec and connection.

Check whether your channel can go live

YouTube’s general requirements are a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16 years old. YouTube Help does not state publication dates for these requirements; check its current live-streaming setup guidance before an event because eligibility rules can change.

Mobile streaming has additional conditions: at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, live streaming enabled, and Android 8.0 or later or iOS 8 or later. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. For mobile channels with over 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may limit viewers and set the archive to private by default. Those subscriber-related conditions apply to mobile, not webcam or encoder streams. See YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements.

Choose a streaming method

Method Best suited to What to consider
Mobile Vlogs, updates, and streams where portability matters Uses the YouTube app and has the additional mobile eligibility requirements above. You can schedule a stream or cast your phone screen.
Webcam A straightforward computer-based stream A webcam and computer are needed. This is a simpler route than configuring an encoder for a basic camera-and-microphone show.
Encoder Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, external cameras, or separate audio gear Requires encoder software or hardware and a connection to YouTube using the stream URL and key.
Console Streaming gameplay directly from a supported console workflow Follow the instructions for your console rather than the computer encoder steps below. YouTube includes console as a streaming pathway in its setup guidance.

YouTube’s tips encourage starting with equipment you already have. A microphone can be an optional audio upgrade; a webcam is only needed if you choose the webcam workflow and do not already have a camera. An encoder can use external audio and video equipment, but those additions are not prerequisites for every stream.

Set up an encoder stream in YouTube Studio

  1. Enable live streaming. Verify your channel, confirm it has no current live-streaming restriction, and enable live streaming if prompted. If this is the first activation, allow the time YouTube specifies for it to become available.
  2. Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then create a new stream or choose a scheduled one. Set its title, description, visibility, and audience. Check visibility carefully before an event: YouTube may apply age-related privacy defaults.
  3. Connect your encoder. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share or show it in screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest.
  4. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check the picture, audio levels, and stream health. Start the YouTube broadcast only after confirming the preview is correct.
  5. End the broadcast and check the archive. End the stream using the controls appropriate to your encoder and YouTube workflow, then confirm that the resulting archive has the visibility you intended. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes archives for streams under 12 hours; do not assume a longer stream will have the same archive outcome.

Plan a scheduled event

For scheduled encoder events, YouTube’s live-streaming tips advise configuring the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes early. Test with movement and audio similar to the actual show. Check that the stream can be viewed on both the channel or watch page and a mobile device, and monitor stream health while live.

Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection as the default. If you want to choose these manually, YouTube says to create a custom stream key and enable manual settings. Run an upload-speed test and leave headroom: a bitrate your connection cannot sustain can cause interruptions. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed for viewers on different devices and network speeds.

Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so these 1080p at 30 fps figures are a reference point, not a universal setting. YouTube Help gives the following current guidance; its page does not state a publication year.

Codec 1080p30 minimum bitrate 1080p30 recommended bitrate
H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 4 Mbps 10 Mbps

For the full codec-by-resolution table and audio settings, consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use the settings for your selected codec and video mode rather than applying the 1080p30 figures to other formats.

Choose latency and protect the stream

Choose latency for the show

Latency is the delay between capture and what viewers see. Lower latency can make chat interaction feel more immediate, but YouTube warns that it may increase viewer buffering. If the format does not depend on responding to viewers in real time, that trade-off may not be worthwhile. Select an appropriate latency option in the stream settings and test playback before the event. YouTube explains latency and related controls in its live-stream settings guidance.

Keep the stream key private

The stream key authorizes an encoder to send video to your event. Keep it out of public documents, screenshots, and overlays; reset it in Live Control Room if it has been compromised. Prefer RTMPS where your encoder supports it, since YouTube recommends the encrypted connection.

Decide whether viewers need DVR

YouTube’s DVR option lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. It can suit an event where viewers may join late or want to revisit a moment; consider the intended viewing experience before changing the setting.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

  • Go Live is unavailable. Confirm channel verification and live-stream eligibility. For mobile, also confirm subscriber count, supported operating system, and that activation is complete; YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • The encoder connects, but no preview appears. Recheck the stream URL and key, ensure the encoder is sending to the event currently open in Live Control Room, and wait for the incoming preview. Reset the key if you suspect it was exposed.
  • The stream buffers, drops, or looks unstable. Compare the encoder bitrate with a fresh upload-speed test. Reduce bitrate or use a more conservative resolution or frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the selected settings; verify the encoder is using CBR and a keyframe interval within YouTube’s guidance.
  • Viewers cannot hear the show. Check the encoder’s selected audio source and levels, then confirm audio in the Live Control Room preview before starting the broadcast.
  • The archive is private or missing. Check the event’s visibility and archive settings. Mobile streams from channels with over 50 but fewer than 1,000 subscribers may default to private; YouTube’s encoder archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, so do not assume a longer stream will archive in the same way.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded recordings rather than stream a camera or a live performance, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It plays uploaded videos on YouTube only, with no re-encode and any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.

Check copyright and channel rules before going live

Confirm that you have the rights to every video, song, image, and other material in the broadcast. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if it includes material you are not authorized to use. YouTube’s reused-content and monetization policies are separate from copyright permission: permission to use material does not by itself establish that a channel meets monetization requirements. Review YouTube’s current rules and use this copyright safety checklist before building a stream around third-party content.
