Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo live stream on YouTube, first verify your channel and enable live streaming, then choose a method—mobile, webcam, encoder, or console—that suits what you want to show. For an encoder stream, create or schedule it in YouTube Studio, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in your encoder, check the preview and stream health, then select Go live. Enable live streaming ahead of time: first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
Check whether your channel can go live
YouTube’s general live-streaming requirements are channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s general guidance also says streamers must be at least 16. If this is your first time streaming, enable the feature well before your planned broadcast: activation may take up to 24 hours.
Mobile streaming has an additional eligibility threshold: at least 50 subscribers, as well as a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and live streaming enabled. This subscriber requirement applies to mobile instructions; do not assume it applies to every streaming method.
Check the current eligibility and feature instructions in YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming and, for a phone, YouTube Help: Create a mobile live stream. YouTube’s interface and requirements can change.

Choose a streaming method
| Method | Best for | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Quick updates, vlogging, or filming on location | YouTube app and a channel that meets mobile eligibility, including the 50-subscriber minimum |
| Webcam | A straightforward broadcast from a computer camera | A computer with a webcam; YouTube’s webcam guidance also covers software encoding |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external camera and audio equipment | Streaming software or a hardware encoder, configured with YouTube’s server URL and stream key |
| Console | Broadcasting directly from a supported game console | A supported console and its manufacturer’s streaming directions |
Use the simplest option that fits the broadcast. A phone or webcam is often enough for a direct talk or update; choose an encoder when you need to show a screen, capture gameplay, add overlays, or connect external equipment. YouTube says you do not need expensive equipment to begin. See YouTube’s overview of live-streaming methods.
How do I live stream on YouTube with an encoder?
This walkthrough is for a computer or hardware encoder. Menu names can change, but YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the Live Control Room to create or schedule the stream and provide the connection details.
- Prepare the channel. Verify it and enable live streaming in advance. Confirm the channel has no current live-streaming restriction.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live. In Live Control Room, create a stream or open the Manage tab to schedule one. Set its title, audience and privacy—public, private or unlisted—and other details. Scheduling creates a watch page you can share; viewers can set reminders.
- Copy YouTube’s connection details. In Live Control Room, locate the stream URL (server URL) and stream key for the selected stream. Keep the key private: YouTube describes it as being like a password and address. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it.
- Configure the encoder. Paste the server URL and stream key into the matching fields in your streaming software or hardware encoder. Select the video and audio sources you intend to use. Follow your encoder’s instructions for its controls; exact labels differ by product.
- Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview. Wait for the incoming stream to appear in Live Control Room. Check that the picture and sound are correct before selecting Go live in YouTube.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Use the encoder and YouTube’s live controls to stop the stream. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, according to YouTube; do not rely on automatic archiving for a longer broadcast.
For a scheduled event, YouTube recommends setting it up at least two hours beforehand and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event. Follow the current steps in YouTube Help: Stream using an encoder and YouTube live streaming tips.

Can I live stream on YouTube from my phone?
Yes, if your channel meets YouTube’s mobile requirements. You need at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and live streaming enabled. Open the YouTube app and use its live-creation flow; review the title, audience and privacy before starting. YouTube may apply additional mobile restrictions or availability rules, so check the current mobile instructions if the option is missing.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a phone broadcast, stabilize the device, check framing and sound, and use a reliable connection. A mobile stream is convenient for a direct, on-location broadcast; use a webcam or encoder instead if you need computer screen capture, layered graphics, or more audio and camera inputs. See YouTube’s mobile live-streaming instructions.
Test your connection, picture and sound
Before a public broadcast, test with the same camera, audio, movement and network you plan to use. YouTube recommends upload capacity above the total bitrate of the stream, with 20% headroom. For example, if your combined video and audio bitrate is 5 Mbps, aim for at least 6 Mbps of available upload capacity. Other devices and network activity can reduce what is available, so test under realistic conditions rather than relying only on a provider’s advertised speed.

- Check the YouTube preview before going live; confirm the intended video source, framing and audio are present.
- Speak and play representative sound while monitoring levels. Watch for clipping, silence, echo or an unintended microphone.
- Move or share the type of content viewers will see. Look for freezes, stutter or degraded image quality.
- Monitor stream health and audio/video quality during the broadcast, not only at startup.
- For an important event, schedule ahead and leave time to correct connection or source problems before the audience arrives.
These checks follow YouTube’s live-streaming tips and YouTube’s streaming tips. YouTube supports different delivery methods and configurations, so use the settings appropriate to your selected method and current guidance rather than copying a bitrate preset that may not fit your stream.
Protect the stream and follow YouTube’s rules
Keep the stream key private
Treat the key as a credential. Do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your stream. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and replace the old key in your encoder before streaming again. See YouTube’s encoder and stream-key guidance and stream settings guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose the right privacy setting
Set the stream to public if you want viewers to find it, unlisted if you intend to share the link without listing it publicly, or private for restricted viewing. Check the selection before starting; a scheduled watch page and reminder option are useful only if the audience can access the stream under its chosen privacy setting.

Use content you are allowed to broadcast
Being live does not exempt a broadcast from YouTube’s copyright or other platform rules. Use footage, music, images and other material you created or have permission to use. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if it violates YouTube policies or rights holders’ claims. Review YouTube’s current live-stream settings and guidance before broadcasting, particularly if the stream includes third-party content.
Troubleshoot common first-stream problems
| What happens | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot find the Go Live option | Live streaming is not enabled, activation is still pending, or the channel is not eligible | Verify the channel, check for a restriction in the previous 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. For mobile, also confirm the 50-subscriber threshold. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | The encoder is not running or its server URL or stream key does not match the selected YouTube stream | Compare both values with the current stream in Live Control Room, then restart the encoder. If the key may be compromised, reset it and update the encoder. |
| The preview is blank or shows the wrong source | The encoder is capturing a different camera, screen, or scene than intended | Check the selected input and scene in the encoder, then wait for the correct preview before going live. |
| Viewers report buffering, freezes or poor video | Available upload capacity may be insufficient or unstable for the stream bitrate | Test the connection, reduce competing network use, and ensure upload capacity exceeds total bitrate by YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
| The stream has no sound or distorted sound | The wrong audio input is selected, the microphone is muted, or the input level is unsuitable | Check the encoder’s audio source and mute controls; test representative speech and sound while watching the preview and levels. |
| A phone cannot start a live stream | The channel may not meet mobile eligibility or the feature may not be enabled | Check verification, the 50-subscriber minimum, restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the current mobile instructions. |
If the encoder still will not connect, return to YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and confirm you are using the stream details for the intended broadcast.
