Yes. You can livestream to YouTube from a Chromebook using YouTube Studio’s browser-based webcam workflow; you do not need a desktop encoder for a basic camera-and-microphone broadcast. Enable live streaming on your channel in advance, then open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live → Webcam.
Choose the right Chromebook workflow
YouTube Studio webcam: the simplest route
Use YouTube’s built-in webcam workflow for a face-to-camera broadcast, interview, lesson, or simple presentation. It runs in the browser and does not require separate streaming software. YouTube lists Chrome 60 or later as compatible with webcam streaming; see YouTube’s webcam setup instructions.
Browser studio: when you need a produced show
A browser-based studio can be useful for guest layouts and production controls. StreamYard documents Chromebook use and recommends Chrome. It recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download, and Ethernet where possible; those are StreamYard recommendations, not YouTube’s minimum requirements or a guarantee that a particular Chromebook or connection will perform reliably. See StreamYard’s requirements and device and equipment guidance.
Encoder workflow: for more specialized production
YouTube’s encoder route is intended for use cases such as screen or gameplay capture and external audio/video equipment. It requires encoder software or hardware, plus YouTube’s server URL and stream key. OBS’s published system requirements list Windows, macOS, and Linux/Unix, not ChromeOS, so do not assume a standard OBS installation is supported on a Chromebook. YouTube’s workflow is described at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; OBS lists its supported operating systems at its system requirements page.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prepare your channel and Chromebook
- Enable live streaming early. If this is the channel’s first livestream, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Check access before the day of an event.
- Sign in to the intended channel. Update ChromeOS and Chrome, then open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube’s webcam instructions list Chrome 60+ as the supported browser minimum.
- Check age and account eligibility. YouTube’s webcam help page currently states that livestreamers must be 16 or older. YouTube also says users aged 13–17 have a private default privacy setting, though the streamer can change the setting. Review the channel’s current eligibility and event settings rather than assuming access.
- Test camera, microphone, and connection. Use the Chromebook’s built-in camera and microphone if they meet your needs. Grant Chrome camera and microphone permissions when prompted. For a StreamYard browser studio, its stated recommendation is at least 5 Mbps both up and down, with Ethernet if available; this is not a YouTube requirement.
Go live with YouTube’s webcam option
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Webcam.
- Enter the stream title and description, then choose the intended privacy setting.
- Select the camera and microphone you want to use. Check the preview and confirm that the right devices are active.
- When ready, select Go live. If you are presenting rather than speaking directly to camera, start the webcam stream first, then use Live Control Room’s Share screen option to choose an entire screen, window, or browser tab. You need a connected webcam and microphone for this screen-sharing workflow.
- To finish, select End stream in YouTube’s controls. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
For a low-risk rehearsal, set the stream to private or unlisted if appropriate, check framing and sound, and confirm privacy before switching to a public event.
Choose a camera and microphone
Start with the built-in devices
The built-in webcam and microphone may be sufficient for a basic stream. If picture or sound is the limiting factor, consider upgrading only that part of the setup. A headset or headphones can also reduce potential echo when remote guests are involved; StreamYard includes that as equipment guidance, not as a prerequisite.

Check webcam compatibility before buying
For an external USB webcam, verify that the maker explicitly supports ChromeOS and that the connector works with your Chromebook. Google’s ChromeOS Compatible webcam specification v2.0 requires a compatible USB camera to support UVC (USB Video Class) 1.0 or later and streaming at 1280×720, 30 fps, in MJPEG format. Those are specification requirements, not proof that every product marketed as a webcam meets them; check the individual product’s compatibility and the app you plan to use.
Common problems and fixes
- You cannot find the Webcam option or go live. Confirm that you are signed into the intended channel and that livestreaming is enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the broadcast.
- The camera or microphone is missing. Check Chrome’s site permissions, reconnect the device, and select the intended camera and microphone in the stream setup. If using an external webcam, verify its ChromeOS and USB compatibility.
- The stream is unstable. Check the upload connection and, if possible, use Ethernet. For StreamYard, the service’s recommendation is at least 5 Mbps upload and download; actual results depend on the Chromebook, network, and production setup.
- You need to show a screen but cannot share it. Start a webcam stream with a webcam and microphone connected, then use Share screen in Live Control Room and choose the screen, window, or tab to present.
- You expected to install OBS normally. OBS’s published system requirements do not list ChromeOS. Use YouTube Studio’s webcam path for a basic show or a documented browser studio if you need more production controls.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, that is different from going live with the Chromebook’s camera. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
