Start with your school’s approved platform and account, then decide whether remote students need to participate in a meeting or only watch a controlled livestream. Before class, confirm who can access it, set moderation controls, protect student privacy, and test sound, captions and connectivity. School policy and administrator settings determine what you may use.

Choose the right format and get school approval

Ask school IT or administration which account and platform to use, whether livestreaming or recording is permitted, and who may watch. Do not assume a consumer account or public platform is allowed for classroom use.

Use an interactive meeting when students need to participate

A meeting is the better fit when students need to speak, ask questions, or otherwise take part. Confirm which participation and moderation features are enabled for your school account.

Use a controlled livestream when viewers only need to watch

A livestream may let an audience watch without joining as active participants. Google describes its Meet livestream feature as allowing people in the organization to watch without participating, but availability and audience restrictions depend on school settings. Check with IT that the feature is enabled and suitable for the intended viewers.

Google says a Workspace administrator must enable Meet for Classroom use and controls which features teachers and students can use. Its administrator guidance says livestreaming and recording permissions can be limited to faculty and staff. Zoom’s educator guide likewise advises teachers to follow their school’s account signup process.

Set up access and moderation before class

Confirm the audience and access method in advance. For Zoom, the educator guide describes passcodes, authenticated users and waiting rooms as access controls, and warns against publicly sharing a meeting ID or passcode. Use the controls available in your school’s approved platform and account.

  • Set access so the session is available to the intended class or organization, not an unintended public audience.
  • Decide whether participants may unmute, turn on video, use chat, share screens or annotate. Enable only what the lesson requires.
  • Plan how to handle late arrivals and disruptive behavior. Zoom’s guide describes muting, removing participants or placing them in a waiting room.
  • If possible, arrange for a co-teacher or moderator to monitor the session while you teach.

Protect student and household privacy

Decide whether students need to appear on camera. If not, teach with the teacher, board, materials or slides in view, and avoid capturing students or household spaces unnecessarily. Use a neutral background and suitable privacy settings.

Tell students and families in advance what the livestream or any recording captures, who can view it, and how to raise questions, in line with school policy. Check the school’s rules before recording: a recording can capture personal information beyond the teacher’s presentation. Do not share a recording link broadly by default; follow school retention and sharing rules.

England’s Department for Education recommends suitable privacy settings, staff familiarity with camera and microphone controls, neutral backgrounds, secure passwords, and giving people information about personal data captured in recordings. Its guidance says to “ensure staff understand and know how to set up and apply controls relating to pupil and student interactions, including microphones and cameras”. This is England guidance, not a universal legal rule. In the United States, the Department of Education’s Student Privacy Policy Office advises teachers to check with school or district administration and IT before adopting online services that may collect information from education records.

Test sound, captions and the classroom connection

Run a short test from the position where you will teach, using the same device and room setup planned for the lesson. Check that your voice is clear, shared materials are readable, the stream reaches the intended audience, and any needed captions are available.

Run the lesson and close the session deliberately

  1. Start the meeting or livestream using the school-approved account and the access settings you checked beforehand.
  2. Remind participants of the class expectations and explain how they should ask questions or use chat.
  3. Monitor microphones, cameras and chat according to your lesson plan. Ask your moderator to handle access or disruptions if one is available.
  4. End the session when teaching is finished. If you recorded it, apply school rules for access, retention and sharing.

Compare classroom streaming options

Use these questions to choose between an interactive meeting and a watch-only livestream, and to check whether a platform is suitable for your class:

What to check Why it matters
Participation Can students speak, chat or share, or do they only watch?
Access control Can the school limit viewing to authenticated accounts or a defined organization?
Moderation Can staff manage microphones, cameras, chat and late arrivals?
Recording and data handling Is recording allowed, who can access it, and what student information might be captured?
Accessibility and reliability Are live captions available, and can the setup work with the classroom’s connection and devices?
Administrative fit Has school IT enabled and approved the feature for the teacher’s account?

Or let it run in the cloud

For a separate use case—a pre-recorded video played as a continuous YouTube livestream—StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. It is not a classroom meeting tool, does not stream a live camera lesson, and streams to YouTube only. Upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
