Spotify Jam is the main way to listen together on Spotify: one person hosts a shared session, and guests can join and add tracks to its queue. The key restriction is location: the host needs Premium, and guests need Premium to join remotely. Free listeners can join a Premium-hosted Jam only in person.
What you need to know before starting
- Hosting: The host must have an active Spotify Premium subscription.
- Joining in person: Free listeners can join a Premium-hosted Jam and add songs when they are together with the host.
- Joining remotely: Each remote participant needs Premium.
- Playback: A speaker is optional. Spotify says Jam works with smart speakers and most Bluetooth speakers.
The group does not have to share a Wi-Fi network to use Jam. Some nearby-phone prompts and playback controls do depend on Bluetooth permissions or compatible casting hardware.
How to start and share a Spotify Jam
On a phone or tablet
- Start playing Spotify on the device you want to use, then open the device picker. You can also open an eligible public playlist.
- Choose Start a Jam, then select Invite.
- Share the invitation link or let guests scan the QR code.
Spotify also documents inviting someone by bringing phones within one meter of each other. For this nearby option, Spotify must be open and logged in on both phones, and Bluetooth must be enabled.
On desktop or TV
On desktop, open the menu for a track or playlist and choose Start a Jam, then invite guests. Spotify also supports starting a Jam on TV; guests can scan the QR code shown on the on-screen queue.

How to join a Jam
- Open the host’s invitation link, scan the QR code, or use the nearby-phone prompt when it is available.
- Choose whether you are joining in person or remotely, then follow the prompts to join.
- If you are joining from a different location, make sure you have Premium. Free listeners can join only when they are with the host in person.
What guests and hosts can control
Guests can add tracks to the shared queue. Depending on the host’s settings and the playback device, they may also be able to rearrange tracks, change what is playing, or adjust volume. The host can manage whether guests can change playback, remove participants, and—on supported devices—allow shared volume control.
Shared volume control is documented for Chromecast and Amazon Cast. It is unavailable when playback uses Bluetooth or Apple AirPlay. A participant who leaves the session or switches playback devices stops participating; if the host leaves, Spotify says the Jam ends for everyone.

Supported devices and car playback
Spotify documents Jam on mobile, desktop, TV, Android Auto, and CarPlay. In a car, the group listens through the car speakers, with guests joining through a QR code or a Bluetooth-related prompt. Spotify’s current support page lists Android Auto requirements of Android Auto version 14.5 or later and Spotify app version 9.0.50 or later. These requirements and app labels can change, so check Spotify’s Jam support page if your setup differs.
Fix common Jam problems
- You cannot start a Jam: Confirm that the host has an active Premium subscription and that Spotify is connected to the intended speaker or playback device.
- A guest cannot join: Check that the invitation was accepted and the intended playback device is selected. A remote guest also needs Premium.
- Volume controls are missing or do not work: Check whether the playback device supports shared volume control and whether the host enabled it. Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay do not support this shared control.
- The nearby-phone option does not appear: Confirm Spotify is open and logged in on both phones and Bluetooth is enabled; the phones need to be within one meter.
Can you listen together through Discord instead?
Spotify also documents Listen Along through Discord: connect your Spotify account to Discord, then select a friend who is listening. Spotify lists this option for Premium users. Unlike Jam, Discord Listen Along cannot be used while voice chatting. If the friend is listening with Spotify Free, you will hear silence while that friend hears ads.
