To learn an instrument, choose one you are motivated to play and can practise regularly, then build its technique and musicianship in small steps. Work on a specific musical goal, listen closely to the result, and use feedback to guide your next attempt. Progress takes sustained, instrument-specific practice; there is no reliable universal timeline to fluency.

Choose an instrument you want to keep playing

There is no single best beginner instrument for everyone. A good choice is one that fits both your musical interests and your circumstances. Before deciding, consider:

  • Sound and repertoire: Which instrument’s sound draws you in, and what kinds of music would you like to play?
  • Access: Can you get an instrument to practise on and find instruction suited to it?
  • Space, portability, and noise: Will the instrument work in your home and routine?
  • Comfort and access needs: Can you hold, reach, or operate it comfortably, with any needed adaptations?
  • Ongoing costs: Consider not just the instrument, but also maintenance and instruction if you plan to use them.

These are practical decision criteria, not a research-backed ranking. Skills on one instrument do not automatically transfer to another: technique depends on the instrument, and learning several superficially may not lead to expressive fluency. The UK Department for Education’s Research review series: music makes that point in the context of school music education.

Build a foundation in manageable steps

Learning an instrument involves more than playing the right notes. The UK Department for Education review describes progression across technical control, understanding how musical elements work together, and expressive quality. For a beginner, that means developing reliable technique while also learning to shape rhythms, notes, chords, or patterns into music.

  • 38-inch beginner guitar: Measuring 38" (L) x 14" (W) x 3.25" (H), this beginner guitar delivers the timeless look and sound of a traditional acoustic guitar. Low string action helps reduce finger fatigue for easier playing and improved comfort while learning. Note: New strings may arrive out of tune, which is normal. As the strings stretch with use, the guitar will hold tuning better over time.

Start with a few basics rather than trying to master everything at once. Depending on the instrument, that could mean producing a sound safely and consistently, using suitable posture or handling, and learning a small set of notes, chords, rhythms, or patterns. Beginners can face several new demands at the same time, so keep the material achievable and add complexity gradually.

Revisit what you have learned. One encounter with a skill is not the same as being able to use it fluently. The Department for Education review recommends incremental teaching and opportunities to consolidate learning, noting that “Little and often” can be useful for acquiring procedural knowledge. Its findings concern school music education, but the principle of returning to and reinforcing a skill is relevant to learners more broadly.

Practise toward a specific musical goal

Rather than repeating a whole piece without a clear purpose, choose one manageable target for a practice session. For example, work on a short passage, a rhythm, a transition between chords, or producing a more even sound. Keep your attention on that goal, listen to each attempt, and decide what to change next.

  1. Choose a small target. Identify the exact passage or musical feature you want to improve.
  2. Play it and listen. Notice what happened, rather than judging only whether the attempt felt easy.
  3. Compare result with intention. Ask whether the sound, timing, or movement matched what you were aiming for.
  4. Adjust and try again. Change one thing at a time where possible, then listen for whether it helped.
  5. Return to it later. Revisit the skill so it has a chance to become more secure.

A 2025 article by Micah Killion and Robert Duke, Learning How to Practice Takes Practice, argues for focused, thoughtful independent practice rather than simply increasing repetitions. The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Music Learning likewise emphasizes self-assessment: compare what you intended to play with what you actually hear, then use that information to solve the problem.

Use feedback as well as independent practice

A teacher can help you identify instrument-specific technique issues, choose suitable next steps, and make practice more purposeful. Independent practice remains important, but feedback can help you notice problems that are hard to hear or correct on your own. The sources support teacher guidance alongside self-directed work; they do not establish that every learner needs paid lessons.

If you use a method book, choose one for your instrument and learning style. A book can give you a sequence of foundational skills, but it is not a substitute for practising or for feedback when you need help with technique.

What practice research can—and cannot—tell you

Practice is meaningfully associated with musical achievement, but the statistics do not predict an individual learner’s outcome or promise a particular rate of progress.

Finding What it means
Corrected correlation of 0.61, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.54–0.67; 13 studies and 788 participants The 2014 meta-analysis The influence of deliberate practice on musical achievement reported this association between task-relevant practice and musical achievement. It is an association across studies, not a causal guarantee for a beginner.
21% of performance variance in music A separate 2014 cross-domain meta-analysis by Macnamara, Hambrick, and Oswald estimated that deliberate practice explained this share of variation in music performance. It found practice important, but not a complete explanation of differences in performance; see Deliberate Practice and Performance in Music, Games, Sports, Education, and Professions.

Neither finding specifies how many minutes a particular beginner should practise each day or how long it will take to become fluent. Keep expectations realistic: progress depends on developing the relevant skills over time, and no fixed number of days or hours is established as a universal route to fluency.
