To stop worship music clipping in a 24/7 church YouTube stream, find and lower the signal level at the first point where distortion appears—not just the OBS fader. Keep every stage below digital full scale, shape a separate broadcast mix if your console allows it, monitor OBS’s input and output meters, and use an OBS limiter last as a safety net. Record and listen to a representative test before going live; a limiter cannot repair audio that was already clipped upstream.
What clipping is—and where to look
Digital audio reaches its full-scale ceiling at 0 dBFS. If a microphone, instrument, console bus, interface input, or final output overloads, the waveform can distort. Lowering the level later may make the distorted signal quieter, but it cannot restore audio already clipped earlier in the chain. OBS likewise says audio ultimately recorded or streamed must remain below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping distortion (OBS Project: Audio Mixer Technical Details).
Trace the complete route: source → console channel and bus → stream output → interface or capture input → OBS source and filters → encoded stream. Listen at the earliest available point and at each later one. The first point where the sound becomes harsh, crackly, or flattened is where to investigate.
Find the stage that is clipping
- Listen to the source and console. Check the microphone or instrument, its channel meter, and the console’s stream-bus or output meter. If distortion is already audible here, reduce gain at the affected channel or bus and check for overloaded processing.
- Check the feed into the computer. Listen to the console’s stream output and the audio interface or capture input. If the console feed sounds clean but the interface input is overloaded, lower the console send or the interface’s input gain, as appropriate.
- Compare OBS input and output. Watch the OBS source meter and the main output meter while the loudest music and speech are playing. If the input is clean but the output peaks reach the ceiling, lower the broadcast mix or source level and inspect the filter order.
- Make a recording and listen back. Review a representative recording before a service. OBS recommends checking levels at the device, then in OBS, and making a recording to review before going live (OBS Project: Audio Mixer Technical Details).
Use the console, interface, and OBS meters together; a safe-looking final meter does not prove that an earlier stage was clean.

Build a mix for remote listeners
The sanctuary mix is designed for the room. It may not balance worship music and speech well for people listening through phones, televisions, headphones, or small speakers. If the console supports it, route a dedicated aux, matrix, or other stream output and balance that independently from the room mix. Yamaha’s church livestream guide explains why the two mixes have different needs (Yamaha: Church Livestreaming).
Listen for intelligible speech over the music as well as musical balance. OBS notes that sources with similar peak-meter readings may not sound equally loud to listeners; a peak meter is not a complete measure of perceived loudness (OBS Project: Audio Mixer Technical Details). If your console cannot provide an independently controlled stream feed, first correct gain staging in the route you do have. A compatible interface or a mixer with a suitable stream output may be useful only if the current setup cannot route or control that feed.

Use OBS meters for headroom, not a platform loudness recipe
OBS’s main meter is a peak-program meter, and its peak-hold indicator helps reveal short transients. A separate black moving indicator is VU-style: OBS says it integrates RMS over 300 ms, making it more indicative of sound pressure than the peak meter. Its technical reference uses a -20 dBFS alignment level and a -9 dBFS permitted maximum level, with the latter allowing margin for meter and alignment uncertainty. These are OBS meter references, not YouTube loudness targets (OBS Project: Audio Mixer Technical Details).
Keep peaks comfortably below 0 dBFS and check the physical meters as well as OBS. Do not treat a fixed value such as -14 LUFS as official YouTube Live guidance: YouTube’s live encoder page provides encoder and stream-health guidance but does not specify a live loudness target (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

Add an OBS limiter as the last safety stage
OBS includes a Limiter filter on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Put it last in the filter chain so it can catch peaks after earlier processing. OBS describes it as a fast-attack, high-ratio compressor intended to prevent peaks above a ceiling; its documented defaults are a -6 dB threshold and 60 ms release. These are defaults, not mandatory settings for every church (OBS Project: Limiter Filter).
Use the limiter to contain occasional peaks, not to compensate for a mix that is consistently too hot. If it is reducing gain frequently, lower the upstream mix or address unusually large dynamics. Excessive limiting can make music pump or flatten; broader AES guidance also warns that limiting can introduce audible artifacts and that player behavior varies (Audio Engineering Society: Loudness Guidelines for Internet Audio Delivery). A limiter cannot undo distortion created before it receives the signal.

Test the encoded stream before the service
- Rehearse representative material. Test with music, speech, and activity similar to the real event, including the loudest passages. YouTube recommends testing under conditions similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
- Listen to the received stream. Check a recording or a private/unlisted preview on the same kinds of devices your audience uses. Listen for distortion, speech buried by music, sudden level changes, and dropouts.
- Monitor the live session. Keep an operator responsible for watching audio levels and YouTube stream health during the broadcast. For a 24/7 stream, schedule human checks and inspect the received stream periodically; the cited guidance does not establish a universal unattended failover design.
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 support for audio and recommends 128 kbps for stereo in its advanced settings. That is an audio transport setting, not an anti-clipping control or loudness target (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

- Distortion is audible in the room or console headphones: the fault is likely before the stream feed. Check source, channel gain, processing, bus, and output meters; lower the first overloaded stage.
- The console sounds clean, but the interface or OBS input is distorted: reduce the console send or interface input gain and confirm the input is not overloaded before OBS processing.
- OBS input is clean, but its output meter reaches the ceiling: lower the broadcast mix or OBS source level, check filters and routing, and use the limiter last as a peak guard.
- The meters look similar, but one source dominates online: peak readings do not represent perceived loudness by themselves. Rebalance the stream mix by listening, especially for speech intelligibility.
- The mix sounds crushed or pumps: the limiter may be working too often. Reduce upstream level or address large dynamics instead of applying heavier limiting.
- Audio is clean locally but poor in the received stream: compare an OBS recording with the encoded preview and check stream health. Re-test with representative audio and video activity before returning to service.
