To keep VLC running through a power cut, put the device playing the video and the network equipment it depends on—usually the router and modem—on battery-backed outlets of a correctly sized UPS or inverter. A computer that stays on cannot keep a YouTube stream playing if the internet connection fails, and backup power alone cannot guarantee that your ISP remains online.
What needs backup power
Make a list of everything that must remain on for playback and internet access:
- The computer or other device running VLC.
- The display, if you need it to operate or monitor the setup.
- The router and modem, or other internet terminal equipment used by your connection.
A computer without a powered router or modem may continue running VLC but lose its network connection. APC identifies computers and wireless networking equipment as possible UPS loads in its UPS buying guide.
Size the UPS or inverter for your actual equipment
- Find each device’s wattage. Check its label or specifications, or measure its draw. Add the wattage of all equipment that will be connected to battery backup.
- Check both output limits. The combined load must remain within the backup unit’s watt and VA ratings. Watts and VA are different ratings; APC explains their relationship through power factor, and Eaton’s UPS selection guide recommends using device wattage to determine the supported load.
- Check runtime at that load. Use the exact model’s load-specific runtime information for your combined equipment. VA by itself does not tell you how long the battery will last. Runtime decreases as connected load increases; APC notes that more equipment connected to a UPS means less runtime.
- Check battery-backed outlets. Connect the required equipment to outlets designated for battery backup, not outlets that provide surge protection only. Follow the labeling and instructions for your particular unit.
There is no reliable runtime estimate without the equipment’s load and the exact backup unit. Do not treat a headline runtime measured at a different load as a prediction for your setup.

Connect and test the setup before an outage
- Connect the VLC device and the router, modem, or other required network equipment to battery-backed outlets. Add the display only if it needs to remain powered.
- Open VLC and confirm that your chosen video or stream plays over the network. VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 desktop documentation describes the general process: choose Media > Open Network Stream, enter a network URL, and click Play.
- With the setup running, simulate a mains-power interruption in a safe, controlled way, following the backup unit’s instructions. Confirm that the playback device and network equipment stay on and that playback continues; observe how long the actual arrangement runs.
- Restore mains power and check the backup unit’s instructions for its normal charging and operating behavior.
Eaton says its desktop UPS systems are designed to remain plugged in so their batteries stay charged and the units are ready for an outage. That is guidance for Eaton desktop UPS systems; follow the documentation for your own UPS or inverter.
Power backup does not guarantee internet access
The battery can keep your local devices powered, but it cannot keep the ISP’s network or upstream equipment operating. Ask your provider how its service behaves during local outages, and test your connection under the conditions you expect. If the connection drops, VLC cannot continue receiving network video just because the computer remains on.

Check VLC and YouTube compatibility on your device
VideoLAN’s documentation establishes how to open a network stream generally, but it does not confirm that a YouTube page URL will work with every current VLC version and platform. Verify playback using your installed VLC version, device, and specific URL before relying on it during an outage. Do not assume that a powered computer guarantees a working YouTube stream.
