First check whether OBS is actually changing its configured frame rate. In OBS, open Settings > Video and verify the selected frame rate and resolution. Then compare those settings with View > Stats and the received resolution and frame rate shown in YouTube Live Control Room. A setting that stays at 60 fps while frames are dropped points to a performance or connection problem—not proof that OBS changed the setting.
What “changing frame rate” can mean
There are two different things to check: the frame rate selected in OBS and whether OBS can render, encode, and deliver frames consistently. If Settings > Video still shows 60 fps but the stream looks choppy or YouTube reports problems, troubleshoot dropped frames or overload rather than assuming OBS switched the configured rate. OBS documentation describes these problems but does not say that OBS automatically changes the video frame-rate setting during a live loop.
Diagnose the problem in order
- Verify OBS output settings. Open Settings > Video and check the output resolution and frame rate. YouTube normally detects encoder settings automatically. If you need to select a stream resolution manually, YouTube’s Live Control Room instructions call for a custom stream key and enabling manual settings under Stream Resolution. See YouTube’s encoder settings and resolution guidance.
- Check OBS Stats and connection status. Open View > Stats. If the dropped-frames count rises and the connection indicator turns yellow or red, the connection to YouTube may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. OBS says it drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. See the OBS dropped frames guide.
- Look for local rendering or encoding overload. Choppy output or an “encoding overloaded” message points toward local system load rather than a dropped-frames connection warning. On Windows, OBS suggests running OBS as administrator, closing other GPU-heavy applications, capping a game’s frame rate or enabling V-Sync, lowering game graphics settings, and simplifying scenes, sources, browser sources, and filters. The same general principle applies to a loop: remove unnecessary scene complexity and competing workloads. See the OBS encoding performance guide.
- Check the selected encoder against existing hardware. A compatible hardware encoder can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component and often has minimal performance impact. Older hardware-encoder generations may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate. Consider an encoder already available on your system; do not assume a new GPU is needed before identifying a local bottleneck. See OBS’s hardware encoding overview.
- Test before the full loop. YouTube advises testing before going live. Use audio and movement similar to the actual program, then monitor OBS Stats and YouTube stream health and messages. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
Use YouTube’s 4K60 settings as a reference
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these recommendations for 4K/2160p at 60 fps. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer can render and encode the scene or that an internet connection can sustain the bitrate.
| Setting | YouTube guidance for 4K/2160p at 60 fps |
|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 bitrate | 10 Mbps minimum; 35 Mbps recommended |
| H.264 bitrate | 14 Mbps minimum; 50 Mbps recommended |
| Bitrate encoding | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps |
| Ingestion protocols | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS |
| Latency at 4K/2160 | Low-latency mode is not available; 4K streams use normal latency and are optimized for quality |
These values are not interchangeable across codecs: the recommended rate is 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 50 Mbps for H.264. A universal bitrate change cannot be promised to fix a frame-rate problem; first determine whether the warning is about connection drops or local overload. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When to lower the frame rate or resolution
If the computer cannot sustain 60 fps, OBS suggests trying 30 fps. That can reduce rendering and encoding load, but it no longer meets a 60 fps target. Reducing output resolution is another way to reduce load. Make either change only after checking Stats and identifying local overload; lowering quality is not a remedy for an unstable connection by itself. OBS’s guidance is at Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
Common symptoms and fixes
- OBS remains set to 60 fps, but YouTube playback is choppy: Check OBS Stats. A rising dropped-frames counter and a yellow or red connection square suggest a connection or sustained-bitrate issue; “encoding overloaded” points toward local rendering or encoding load.
- Dropped frames rise while the connection indicator is yellow or red: Investigate whether the connection to YouTube is stable enough for the selected bitrate. Changing encoder alone will not establish that the network can sustain the stream.
- “Encoding overloaded” appears: Reduce competing GPU work and scene complexity; on Windows, apply OBS’s administrator and workload suggestions. If the system still cannot hold the target, try 30 fps or a lower output resolution, understanding that these reduce the target quality.
- YouTube receives a different resolution than intended: Check OBS output settings and YouTube’s stream setup. YouTube detects encoder settings by default; manual resolution selection requires the applicable custom stream key and manual Stream Resolution setting in Live Control Room.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube loop running rather than troubleshoot a home OBS setup, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
