How to Keep a YouTube Stream Running When OBS Loses Its Media Source

A blank OBS source and a disconnected YouTube ingest are different failures. Diagnose the right layer and use the matching recovery steps.

First identify which part failed: an OBS media source can go blank while OBS continues sending a stream, or OBS can lose its connection to YouTube even while the source still plays in the preview. The fixes are different. Check the source and its playback settings for the first problem; check OBS’s reconnect and network settings for the second. Neither fix guarantees that every broadcast will stay live through every failure.

Identify what stopped working

Look at the OBS preview and YouTube’s Live Control Room before changing settings. If the preview is blank, frozen, or missing a clip while OBS still appears to be streaming, investigate the source. If the preview is working but YouTube reports a connection problem or viewers see a stall, investigate the encoder-to-ingest connection. A third possibility is that both failed.

  • Preview is wrong: the source may be hidden, covered, unable to play, or pointing to a missing file or unavailable feed.
  • Preview is right, YouTube feed is wrong: OBS may have lost its connection to YouTube’s ingest server, or the selected event, stream URL, or key may be wrong.
  • YouTube event has ended: check the event’s start/stop behavior and whether the encoder is still sending content.

OBS’s media-source controls govern playback inside a scene; its automatic reconnect control addresses the stream connection. Restarting a clip will not repair a disconnected encoder, and reconnecting the encoder will not restore a missing media file.

Restore the OBS source

Check the scene, visibility, and file path

  1. In OBS, select the scene being sent to YouTube and inspect its Sources list. Confirm that the expected source is still listed, its visibility is enabled, and another source is not covering it. OBS sources can be shown, hidden, and ordered, so a source that looks lost may simply be hidden or obscured.
  2. For a local Media Source, open its properties and verify that the file path points to an available file. If the file was moved, renamed, or disconnected from its storage location, select the correct file again.
  3. Check the playback options against the intended behavior. Turn on Loop if the clip should replay after it ends. Enable Restart playback when source becomes active if it should start from the beginning when it becomes active in the current scene and visible. This setting does not universally reconnect a camera, network source, or YouTube encoder.
  4. Consider whether Close file when inactive is appropriate. When enabled, OBS unloads the file while the source is inactive; reloading it can cause a short delay after a scene switch. Leaving it off may avoid that reload delay.
  5. If the source disappears at the end of a clip, inspect Show nothing when playback ends. OBS describes this option as automatically hiding the source when playback ends.

If the source is a VLC playlist

Open the VLC Source properties and verify the playlist entries, Loop Playlist, and visibility behavior. VLC Source uses VLC libraries for extended media support and requires VLC installed; OBS documents 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Using VLC does not guarantee that an unavailable URL or failed source will recover.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the source is an external feed

For a camera, network stream, or other external source, first check that the source remains present and visible, then verify that the feed itself is available. Local-file controls such as Loop and restart-on-activation are not general reconnection controls for every source type. If the source recovers but does not appear in the scene, check its visibility and ordering again.

Reconnect OBS to YouTube if the preview still works

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and inspect Configure Automatic Reconnect. This is the setting for recovering from an encoder connection interruption, not a repair for media playback inside the scene.
  2. Check OBS’s dropped-frame status. OBS attributes dropped frames to an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or a connection that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the stream.
  3. In OBS’s stream settings, verify the selected server and that the configured bitrate is supportable by a stable upload connection. If the connection cannot sustain the bitrate, reduce it and check whether the dropped-frame problem improves.
  4. Check whether security software, a VPN, or modem, router, or other network hardware is interfering. If the route appears outside your control, contact your internet service provider.

Changing the bitrate can help with an ingest connection that cannot keep up; it will not fix a blank or missing source in the OBS scene.

Verify the YouTube event and stream key

YouTube’s Live Control Room provides the stream URL and key used by an encoder. If OBS cannot send to YouTube, confirm that both belong to the intended event and are entered in the encoder. YouTube describes a stream key as the encoder’s “password and address”: keep it private. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.

Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings if your workflow depends on restarting OBS. Do not assume an event remains live indefinitely after its encoder feed stops. YouTube’s encoder instructions say, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” Scheduled-stream instructions also tell operators to end the stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content. Check the state of the specific event rather than relying on an earlier encoder session to keep it open.

Choose recovery actions by failure type

What you observe Likely area to inspect First recovery action
Media Source is blank or ends unexpectedly; YouTube connection remains active Local file path, playback options, visibility, or source order Restore the path or correct the source’s playback and visibility settings
VLC playlist does not play or loop Playlist entries, Loop Playlist, visibility, or VLC installation Check those settings and confirm the required VLC installation
OBS preview is working but YouTube reports a stall or connection issue OBS reconnect, selected ingest server, bitrate, or network Inspect automatic reconnect and diagnose dropped frames and the network
OBS cannot send to the intended YouTube event Event selection, stream URL, or stream key Verify the event credentials in Live Control Room and OBS
Broadcast continuity matters if the primary encoder fails Whether a supported backup encoder is configured and rehearsed Test failover before relying on it

Plan continuity for an important broadcast

YouTube recommends continuously monitoring streams for audio and video quality. For a supported redundant-encoder setup, its failover guidance calls for testing by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. Treat this as a rehearsal for a configured backup setup, not as a feature that every single-encoder OBS stream automatically has.

Before relying on any recovery method, test it with the actual source type, scene, network, and YouTube event settings you plan to use. A local recording, VLC playlist, external feed, and encoder connection have different failure modes.

Protect the content and the stream key

Before sending a documentary or playlist to YouTube, make sure you have the rights needed to stream every video and its audio, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content rules. A working encoder does not establish permission to broadcast a recording. Keep the stream key private because anyone with it may be able to send content to the event.
