Keep the laptop connected to power. This prevents lid-triggered sleep in that configuration; it cannot guarantee uninterrupted internet or YouTube continuity.
Why closing the lid can stop an OBS stream
Many laptops are configured to sleep when the lid closes. Microsoft says, “For a lot of PCs (especially laptops and tablets), your PC goes to sleep when you close your lid or press the power button.” Microsoft’s Windows sleep guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11.
When a computer sleeps, OBS cannot continue its normal encoding and network work. Changing the lid action addresses that sleep trigger, not every possible interruption: power loss, a shutdown, network failure, or a platform-side disconnect can still interrupt a broadcast. The setting alone does not establish what YouTube will show or how it will reconnect after a disconnect.
Keep a Windows laptop awake when you close the lid
- Check the operating system. These lid-action steps are for Windows, not macOS.
- Open the lid controls. Go to Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does.
- Change the plugged-in action. Beside When I close the lid, choose Do nothing in the Plugged in column.
- Save the change and confirm that the intended power plan is active.
- Connect the laptop to power. The On battery choice is separate. Change it only if you deliberately need the laptop to keep running on battery, and account for its limited charge.
- Start or verify the OBS broadcast before closing the lid. If possible, watch the broadcast from another device after closing it so you can notice an interruption.
Microsoft also describes setting the lid action to Do nothing when using a Windows laptop with an external monitor; you can restore Sleep later if you want the usual lid behavior. See Microsoft’s guidance on using a monitor with a closed laptop.

What to do on a Mac
Mac laptops do not use the Windows When I close the lid menu. Closed-lid use with an external display has setup requirements that vary by Mac model. Apple says a Mac laptop connected to an external display with its lid closed should be connected to power and use an external keyboard and mouse. Its guidance for M3 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro dual-display setups is specific to the supported models, macOS versions, and display arrangements. macOS also offers a setting to prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off while the Mac is connected to a power adapter, but Apple notes that some settings may not be available on every Mac. Treat it as an automatic-sleep control for applicable configurations, not a universal override for every closed-lid Mac. Details are in Apple’s sleep and wake settings guide. Check the stream before and after closing the lid
- Confirm the laptop is plugged in and the intended power settings are active.
- Verify OBS is already live and the broadcast is stable before closing the lid.
- Use another device to monitor the broadcast if available.
- If the stream stops, reopen the laptop and check whether it slept, shut down, lost power, or lost its network connection. Do not assume OBS itself caused the interruption.
Troubleshooting if the stream still stops
