Yes, you can close the browser after a prerecorded YouTube stream is live—but only if the encoder sending the video keeps running. With a local setup, that means OBS, the computer it runs on, power and internet must remain available. Closing a browser tab does not move playback into YouTube’s cloud or keep a stopped computer streaming.
Why closing the browser does not stop a live stream
YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room is where you configure and monitor a broadcast. An encoder—such as OBS—sends the actual video and audio feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow documents this separation; the conclusion that the browser can close while the stream continues follows from those distinct roles. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow.
For a local prerecorded stream, OBS plays the file and sends it continuously. If OBS stops, the computer sleeps or loses power, or the internet connection drops, the encoder is no longer sending the feed. The browser can be closed only after the required launch steps are complete and while the encoder host continues operating.
Set up a prerecorded stream in OBS
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Set its title, visibility and other details. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- Copy the stream URL and key. Use the server URL and stream key shown in the stream settings when connecting OBS. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Review Manage live stream settings and do not publish or casually share the key.
- Add the recording in OBS. Add a Media Source, select the video file, and enable Loop if it should repeat. For a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist; OBS notes that the VLC source requires VLC to be installed. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Configure and test the encoder. Connect OBS using its YouTube service integration or the YouTube stream URL and key. Check that the video and audio play as intended, then start the encoder. Confirm that the preview appears in Live Control Room and check the stream status before relying on it. YouTube recommends setting up in advance, checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality (live streaming tips).
- Complete the YouTube launch step. Depending on the stream workflow and settings, YouTube may start automatically when it receives the encoder feed, or you may need to click Go live after the preview appears. Check the stream’s auto-start setting; do not close the browser until any required manual launch action is complete. YouTube documents auto-start and auto-stop in stream settings.
- Keep the local encoder running. Once YouTube shows the stream as live, close the browser if you wish. Keep OBS open, prevent the computer from sleeping or shutting down, and maintain power and internet for as long as the local stream must continue.
Choose encoder settings for the video you are sending
Use YouTube’s current recommendations for your selected resolution, frame rate and codec rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps; other combinations have different recommended ranges. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Check the full encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance before setting output values.

Choose settings the computer and connection can sustain continuously, and verify the result in YouTube’s preview. YouTube’s settings are technical recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular local computer or network will remain stable unattended.
Plan long streams around replay and DVR limits
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, keep a local recording as a backup and plan the broadcast duration accordingly. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, so do not promise viewers they can rewind through a very long broadcast. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
What to do when the stream stops or will not start
- No preview in Live Control Room: Confirm OBS is running and sending, and recheck the selected YouTube stream URL and key. Do not share the key while troubleshooting.
- Preview appears but the stream is not live: Check whether the scheduled stream requires a manual Go live action or whether auto-start is enabled in YouTube’s stream settings.
- The file ends instead of repeating: Check that Loop is enabled for the OBS Media Source. If using a VLC playlist, check Loop Playlist and confirm VLC is installed.
- OBS stops sending after a while: Check whether the computer slept, shut down, lost power or lost its internet connection. A browser tab cannot keep a local encoder alive.
- Video or audio quality is poor: Check the output resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate against YouTube’s recommendations for that specific combination, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and monitor the feed.
- No replay after a long broadcast: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be archived. Preserve a local recording when the replay matters and keep YouTube’s DVR limitation in mind when setting viewer expectations.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer at home to run OBS continuously, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist streaming to YouTube from the cloud. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
