To keep a prerecorded church service live on YouTube from a Linux host, run FFmpeg as a foreground process under a systemd service, send it to the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, and set systemd to restart the encoder after qualifying failures. That can recover a failed process; it cannot prove YouTube resumed the broadcast or that viewers can see and hear it. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health before and during the service.
The example below is a template, not a tested drop-in. Adapt it to your Linux distribution, installed systemd and FFmpeg versions, video and audio, upload capacity, and the YouTube broadcast you select.
What systemd can—and cannot—keep running
systemd supervises the encoder process on your Linux host. With Restart=on-failure, it can start FFmpeg again after qualifying failures. A running or restarted service does not establish that YouTube is receiving a valid signal, that the event is live, or that its watch page works for viewers. Those need separate checks in YouTube Live Control Room and on the viewer-facing page.
A prerecorded service must be sent by an encoder as a live broadcast; uploading a file to YouTube is a different workflow. For a repeating service, FFmpeg can read the file in real time and loop it. The church must have the rights to stream the recording, including any music, readings, images, or other material it contains. A live-looking presentation does not itself establish copyright permission or eligibility for monetization.

Prepare the YouTube broadcast and host
Get the correct YouTube endpoint
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast. You can schedule it ahead of time. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- In the encoder settings, select the RTMPS URL and copy the stream key. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; select RTMPS rather than assuming a copied endpoint is the secure one. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public document, support post, shell history, or world-readable service file. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Confirm that the Linux service account can read the video file and that the installed FFmpeg build supports the intended input and RTMPS output. Check the executable path with
command -v ffmpegand inspect the installed build’s capabilities withffmpeg -protocols. These commands show local installation details; they do not verify the YouTube connection. - Check the source file’s streams and properties before choosing output settings. For example,
ffprobe -hide_banner /srv/stream/service.mp4reports media information when ffprobe is installed. Confirm the video and audio tracks, dimensions, frame rate, and codecs rather than guessing from the filename.
Choose compatible encoding settings
YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Select settings appropriate to the source and the host’s available upload capacity; there is no single bitrate or resolution that is safe to prescribe without those details. Test with representative movement and audio, then monitor stream health. The current guidance is at YouTube’s encoder settings page.
RTMPS is RTMP carried over a secure connection. Use the RTMPS URL supplied for the selected broadcast. YouTube’s connection troubleshooting calls out port 443; if the host cannot connect, check outbound network rules and the endpoint before changing unrelated encoding options. FFmpeg describes the protocol in its protocol documentation.

Build and manually check the FFmpeg command
First test the encoder interactively with a protected key-handling method suitable for your host. Do not paste a real key into a shared terminal, script, public ticket, or service file. The following is a command shape, not a tested command; replace the placeholders and choose codecs, bitrates, and scaling only after checking the media and upload connection:
/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/service.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE -maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
-r FRAME_RATE -g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL_IN_FRAMES -keyint_min KEYFRAME_INTERVAL_IN_FRAMES -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a AUDIO_BITRATE -ar 44100
-f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"
This illustrates real-time input (-re), repeat playback (-stream_loop -1), video and audio encoding, and an RTMP-family output format. The URL and key placeholder must be replaced using a secret-safe method. FFmpeg option compatibility depends on the installed build; confirm options and output behavior locally. Do not assume the example’s illustrative encoder choices fit every source. For a finite, one-time service rather than a repeating channel, omit loop behavior and plan how the service should exit and be stopped.

Watch FFmpeg’s output during the manual test for input errors, unsupported codecs, permission failures, and connection or encoding problems. Then verify the incoming preview in Live Control Room before starting the actual event. A command that stays open is not by itself proof of a healthy YouTube broadcast.
Create a systemd service
Use a foreground process and protect the key
Keep FFmpeg in the foreground in ExecStart=; systemd must supervise the long-running encoder itself. Avoid putting the stream key in a broadly readable unit file or relying on an environment variable as secret storage. The systemd execution manual explicitly says environment variables are unsuitable for secrets and documents credential directives including LoadCredential=, LoadCredentialEncrypted=, and SetCredentialEncrypted=. Which directives are available depends on the installed systemd version. Read systemd.exec for the installed release’s supported options.

FFmpeg needs the key as part of its output URL. One practical pattern is a root- or service-account-protected credential plus a small, access-controlled launcher that reads it and starts FFmpeg. Keep the credential and launcher readable only by the required account, and account for the fact that the completed output URL is passed to FFmpeg. Do not claim that a credential file makes a key invisible to privileged users or every process-inspection mechanism. Choose a method appropriate to the host’s threat model and systemd release.

Install, start, and inspect
- Save the unit as
/etc/systemd/system/church-stream.serviceand adapt it for the host’s secret-handling method. - Run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadafter creating or changing the unit. - For a stream intended to start after boot, run
sudo systemctl enable church-stream.service. This selects a boot-start model; it does not make a scheduled YouTube event live automatically. - Start it with
sudo systemctl start church-stream.service, then inspectsudo systemctl status church-stream.serviceandsudo journalctl -u church-stream.service -ffor startup and encoder errors. - Separately inspect the incoming preview, stream health, audio and video, and event accessibility in YouTube. Check the channel or watch page from a viewer’s device as well.
For a finite service that should not repeat, do not use Restart=always casually: a clean encoder exit and an intentional stop have different effects under restart policies. systemd also applies start-rate limits, so repeated failures can leave a service rate-limited rather than restarting forever. Find and fix the underlying cause before trying recovery. See systemd.service(5) for restart behavior and limits.
Run the service as an event, not just a process
Before the broadcast
- Schedule or select the correct YouTube event and confirm the encoder is using that event’s RTMPS URL and key.
- Start early enough to inspect YouTube’s incoming preview. Confirm the expected picture and sound and that the stream health indicators do not show a problem.
- Check the viewer-facing event page and access settings from a relevant viewer device. Keep an operator available to monitor the stream; a service status check cannot replace this.
- Use representative material during tests, especially if the real service has different motion, audio levels, or duration.
When the encoder fails or viewers report a problem
- Check
systemctl statusand the unit journal to determine whether FFmpeg exited, is repeatedly restarting, or has hit a start-rate limit. - Look for a specific cause: inaccessible or moved input file, wrong executable path, unsupported option or codec, expired or incorrect stream key, incorrect RTMPS endpoint, or network/firewall trouble.
- Use YouTube’s preview and stream health to distinguish an encoder-process issue from a YouTube ingestion or viewer-access issue. A successful systemd restart only confirms that a process was started.
- Correct the cause, then restart deliberately with
sudo systemctl reset-failed church-stream.serviceif systemd has rate-limited it, followed bysudo systemctl start church-stream.service. Verify the YouTube preview again.
End the event cleanly
Follow the expected operator workflow in YouTube to end the live event, then stop the encoder with sudo systemctl stop church-stream.service. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover advance setup, monitoring, and wrap-up. Do not leave a looping encoder running after the church service has ended unless that is the intended broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining a Linux host and supervising FFmpeg is more work than you want, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded video live on YouTube: upload the recording, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing at home has to stay on; it loops uploaded video, not a camera feed. You get any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
