If your YouTube podcast stream stopped working after an OBS Studio update, first check whether OBS itself is failing or whether the stream is disconnecting because of your network. OBS updates are expected to preserve settings, but security software can interfere with an updated installation. If OBS opens normally and its dropped-frames count rises, investigate the connection and bitrate instead.
First identify what stopped working
“OBS is not working” can describe several different problems. Diagnose the symptom before changing settings: an application failure after an update is not the same as an unstable connection to YouTube, and neither necessarily explains buffering reported by viewers.
| What you notice | What it points to | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| OBS will not open, or settings or functions stopped working immediately after an update | A local application or system issue; security software may be interfering with the updated OBS files. | Check the installation and security software allowlist. |
| OBS opens, but dropped frames increase or the stream disconnects | The connection to the remote ingest server may be unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. | Use OBS’s connection troubleshooting sequence. |
| OBS reports no dropped frames, but viewers say the stream buffers | Viewer playback conditions can vary by location, device and internet connection. | Check the stream’s bitrate and resolution against the needs of your audience. |
If OBS stopped working after the update
The OBS Project Help Portal says updates should leave settings intact, while noting that something else on the computer may have interfered with the update process. Its FAQ specifically flags security programs that scrutinize OBS after an update. An executable may need to be removed from and added back to the security product’s allowlist if the product treats the changed file as a new program. Read the OBS Project Help Portal FAQ.
- Check whether OBS can start. If it cannot, note any error message and whether the issue began immediately after updating.
- Review your security software. Check that the OBS folder is allowlisted. If the software lists individual executables, check whether an updated file needs to be re-added.
- Test cautiously. If you need to determine whether security software is blocking OBS, temporarily test the suspected software, then add an OBS exception if that confirms the cause and re-enable protection. Do not leave protection disabled.
- Use OBS’s setup aid if the application works but settings need attention. In OBS, open Tools → Auto Configuration Wizard. The OBS Project Help Portal says the wizard can get most basic settings correct; it does not establish that it will fix every update-related problem.
OBS is free and open-source software distributed under GPLv2; its FAQ describes it as having no watermark or usage limitations. That does not mean every stream configuration or YouTube account issue is controlled by OBS. OBS Project Help Portal.

If OBS is dropping frames or disconnecting
Dropped frames mean the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the bitrate you set. OBS says this is typically outside OBS Studio’s control. OBS has no streaming servers: your computer connects directly to the streaming service, such as YouTube. Follow these checks in order, changing one thing at a time so you can tell what affects the connection. OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide (dated 2024-09-30).
- Try another server, where available. In OBS, open Settings → Stream and test a different server if the service offers one. Trying a different service can help determine whether the issue is service-specific; treat that only as a diagnostic, not a permanent solution.
- Lower the video bitrate. Open Settings → Output and reduce the video bitrate. OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed. This is the guide’s starting recommendation, not a guarantee: the usable capacity can vary, so observe whether the dropped-frames count improves.
- Review network options. Open Settings → Advanced → Network. Check network optimizations and TCP pacing (Windows only), and leave Bind to IP at Default. You can test IPv4 Only; if it makes no difference, return to the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting. Dynamic bitrate is a beta option that can reduce bitrate during congestion, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can reduce stream quality.
- Check software that can interfere with connections. VPNs, firewalls, antivirus products and network “optimization” tools are possible contributors. If a temporary test identifies security software as the cause, add an OBS exception and turn protection back on.
- Test the network path. If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, try connecting the computer to the router with Ethernet. Restart the modem and router for general connectivity trouble.
- Escalate before replacing equipment. Possible faulty components include a router, modem, cable, network card, switch or extender. If you are unsure, OBS recommends contacting your internet service provider before replacing hardware. Contact the provider if the guide’s troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue.
If viewers report buffering but OBS does not
Viewer buffering is not proof that OBS is dropping frames. A stream can play differently for viewers because their locations, devices and internet connections vary. OBS recommends staying within the platform’s recommendations and lowering bitrate or resolution when that better serves the intended audience. OBS Project’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide (dated 2021-06-09).

- If OBS is also dropping frames, troubleshoot the connection and bitrate above.
- If OBS is not dropping frames, consider whether the stream’s bitrate or resolution is too demanding for the viewers you need to reach.
If OBS connects but the YouTube event is not live
OBS-side connection guidance cannot establish whether a particular YouTube event, stream key, account state or control-room setting is correct. An OBS update alone does not prove that the stream key is wrong. Check that you selected the intended active event and consult YouTube’s current live control room instructions. The OBS sources cited here do not verify those YouTube-specific settings.
