How to Keep a 24/7 YouTube Music Stream Playing When the Playlist Ends

To keep a public YouTube music stream going, loop the source feeding the encoder—not just the playlist in YouTube’s player—and test the handoff before going live.

If you mean listening to a YouTube playlist yourself, turn on its Repeat control. If you mean broadcasting a public 24/7 music stream, the Repeat button in YouTube’s player is not enough: your source playlist or automation must loop and keep feeding the encoder connected to YouTube.

Choose the right kind of repeat

For personal listening

On desktop, open a video from the playlist, expand the playlist, then click Loop in the playlist box. On a TV or game console, select Repeat until it shows Playlist. This repeats playback for you; it does not control a separate broadcast encoder. YouTube’s playlist help describes these playback controls.

For a public livestream

A livestream is an encoder workflow. Your encoder sends audio and video to YouTube using the server URL and stream key. If the encoder stops sending content, the feed can end. The viewer-side playlist Repeat control is not documented as a way to loop the encoder’s source. You need to set the source playlist or automation software to repeat, then keep that source and encoder running. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the connection model.

Set up a continuous broadcast

  1. Choose your encoder workflow. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. A computer running source software and an encoder gives you a creator-controlled setup; dedicated hardware may suit a higher-production event. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, but this is not a requirement for every creator. YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers its general recommendations.
  2. Make the source repeat. Configure the playlist or automation inside the software that supplies media to your encoder. YouTube’s setup guidance does not prescribe a universal loop switch for third-party source software, so check that software’s current instructions and test the transition from the last item back to the first.
  3. Connect the encoder to YouTube. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder, then confirm that the Live Control Room preview receives the feed before going live. Treat the stream key as a credential: it is what lets the encoder send to your stream. Do not expose it in a recording, screenshot, or public post. YouTube’s encoder setup page describes this connection.
  4. Test the loop in a private or unlisted stream. Watch through the end of the playlist and confirm that the next item starts without a gap, silence, or encoder stoppage. A playlist that looks continuous in its editor may still fail at the handoff in the actual source-to-encoder workflow.
  5. Check upload capacity. Compare your available upload bandwidth with the complete outgoing stream bitrate, including audio, and leave at least 20% headroom above the total bitrate, as YouTube recommends. A network disruption can interrupt the stream. YouTube’s streaming tips explain the bandwidth margin.
  6. Monitor while live. Check audio, picture, the source playlist, network condition, and YouTube stream health. YouTube recommends continuous audio/video monitoring. If you have a backup encoder, test it by stopping the primary and confirming playback rolls over to the backup. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes monitoring and backup testing.

Keep the stream running when your computer cannot

A local setup depends on the computer, source software, encoder, and network staying available. If you want a YouTube stream of uploaded videos without leaving your own computer running, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. It is #1 among the options here for hands-off continuity: it stays on in the cloud, streams your upload at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.

Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.

Plan for long streams and replays

YouTube’s encoder setup help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that every longer stream will end automatically. Separately, YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If viewers need a replay or rewind, verify the current behavior and settings for your stream rather than promising that a long broadcast will be archived or fully rewindable. Encoder setup help and YouTube’s DVR guidance describe these duration caveats.

Troubleshoot an interrupted or broken loop

  • The playlist ends and the broadcast stops: the source may not be set to repeat, or the encoder may stop when its input ends. Configure looping in the source software and test the end-to-start transition in a private or unlisted stream.
  • YouTube preview has no signal: check that the encoder is running, the correct server URL and stream key are entered, and the source is playing. Confirm the preview in Live Control Room before going live.
  • The stream drops during playback: inspect the network and encoder, then compare upload capacity with the total outgoing bitrate. Keep YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom; if using a backup encoder, test failover and confirm the player rolls over.
  • The stream is live but audio or video is missing: check the source output and encoder input, then monitor the feed in the Live Control Room. Test the full setup before relying on it for an unattended broadcast.
  • Viewers cannot rewind or find an archive: long-stream DVR can be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours, and YouTube’s cited automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. Check the current stream behavior and settings.

Music rights still apply

Making a playlist repeat does not establish permission to broadcast its music. Confirm that you have the rights or licenses needed for the music in a public livestream and any replay. The YouTube setup guidance cited here explains encoders and stream operations, not whether particular music is licensed for your use.
