Lower your encoder’s video bitrate first. It directly reduces the data your computer sends to YouTube; if you need to cut more, test a lower output resolution or frame rate and check the snow footage for lost detail or choppy motion. There is no universal bitrate that preserves every snowstorm scene, so judge the actual stream and monitor its health.
Start with the video bitrate
In your streaming encoder, reduce the video bitrate in small steps, then test the result using the snowstorm footage you plan to stream. Snowflakes are fine, moving details; they may show compression artifacts even when a still image looks acceptable. Watch the encoded output for softened flakes, blockiness, or loss of texture, and check that the stream remains stable.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance gives recommended settings by resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, its listed recommendations include 4 Mbps for 240p–720p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations for the specified settings, not a snow-specific quality threshold or guarantee that a particular connection will sustain them. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings table before configuring a stream, since its guidance may change.
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval in its encoder guidance. It also specifies RTMP/RTMPS and supported codecs. Use the requirements for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than treating one preset as suitable for every stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Estimate how much data a bitrate uses
At a constant 1 Mbps, a 24-hour stream sends approximately 10.8 decimal GB before protocol overhead: 1,000,000 bits per second × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000. At 4 Mbps, the same calculation gives approximately 43.2 decimal GB per day before overhead. These are arithmetic estimates based on a constant configured bitrate, not measured traffic or a YouTube guarantee. Actual usage can vary with bitrate behavior and network overhead.
Reduce resolution or frame rate if needed
If lowering bitrate alone does not meet your data or connection needs, test a lower output resolution or frame rate. Fewer pixels or frames can reduce encoding and upload demands, but may make the image less detailed or the snowfall less smooth. Compare settings using the same representative footage and audio, paying attention to visible snow detail, motion, and stream stability.

OBS advises that bitrate should reflect both stable upload capacity and the platform’s limits. Its connection troubleshooting guidance suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a universal rule. Other household uploads and connection fluctuations can reduce what is reliably available to your stream. OBS also describes dynamically changing bitrate as a congestion workaround that reduces quality; it does not fix the underlying network problem. See OBS connection troubleshooting.
Understand what YouTube transcoding changes
YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into different output formats so viewers can watch on different devices and network connections. That may give viewers a choice of playback quality, but it does not lower the bitrate your encoder sends to YouTube. To reduce your outgoing data, change your encoder’s send rate. OBS explains platform transcoding in its transcoding overview.

Test and troubleshoot the stream
- Set a starting bitrate. Use YouTube’s current recommendation for your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec, while accounting for your stable upload capacity.
- Run a representative test. Use the actual snowstorm video and audio, not a still frame or an unrelated low-motion clip. Check detail, motion, and the platform’s stream-health indicators.
- Lower bitrate if upload is unstable or data use is too high. Re-test after each change. If image quality becomes unacceptable, try reducing resolution or frame rate instead and inspect the tradeoff.
- Investigate connection limits. Check whether other devices or uploads are using bandwidth and compare the stream’s demand with sustained upload capacity. A lower bitrate may help with congestion, but dynamic bitrate only adapts quality; it does not resolve the cause of an unreliable connection.
- Stream drops or health warnings: the connection may not sustain the configured bitrate, or available upload capacity may fluctuate. Reduce bitrate and check competing network use.
- Snow looks soft or blocky: the encode may be too constrained for the moving detail. Try a higher bitrate if the connection can sustain it, or compare a lower resolution or frame rate at an acceptable visual quality.
- Playback options do not reduce your data use: viewer transcoding changes playback versions, not the encoder’s upstream send rate. Reduce that rate in the encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a YouTube snowstorm stream running without sending the continuous stream from your home connection, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo’s automatic recovery can resume if YouTube drops the stream. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers.
The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The Monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your StreamNeo free day.
