You can run a 24/7 sleep sounds stream from a spare PC by sending a prepared audio-and-video feed to YouTube Live through an encoder, then preventing the computer from sleeping and monitoring the connection. The key is to test the whole setup before relying on it: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and even a correctly configured PC cannot prevent an internet or power interruption.
Before you set up the stream
- Confirm live access. Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Prepare the sleep-sounds program. Have the audio and any visuals ready in the encoder or playback setup you plan to use. Make sure you have the rights to stream the audio and visuals; YouTube’s encoder setup does not grant permission to use copyrighted material.
- Check the spare PC and network. The PC must be able to play or encode the program continuously, and your available upload bandwidth must accommodate the chosen stream bitrate with headroom.
Set up YouTube Live and connect the spare PC
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, set up the stream, and retrieve the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this workflow.
- Protect the stream key. Enter the URL and key into your encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream. You can reuse a custom key through YouTube’s stream settings if that suits your workflow, and reset a compromised key. See Manage live stream settings.
- Choose output settings that your PC and connection can sustain. Select a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriate to the visuals and the computer’s capabilities. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS encoder delivery with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Its settings guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current choices. There is no single ideal bitrate for every sleep stream.
- Check YouTube’s preview before making the stream public. Start the encoder, then confirm that the Live Control Room receives a picture and sound. An unlisted test is useful for checking playback without presenting an unfinished setup as a public broadcast.
- Start the broadcast and verify the viewer experience. Check the Live Control Room’s stream health and open the public watch page to confirm the stream plays as expected. YouTube recommends setting up well ahead of time, testing, and monitoring the event; see YouTube live-streaming tips.
Keep the PC running continuously
Prevent sleep and hibernation
Set the spare PC’s power options so it does not sleep or hibernate while the stream is meant to run. Menu names vary by operating system and version, so check the current power settings on that computer. Test the setting by leaving the machine on for longer than a typical idle period and confirming that playback and encoding continue.
Plan for encoder and power interruptions
Find out how your chosen encoder behaves if its connection drops or the application closes. Confirm whether it reconnects, and decide how you will restart it after a crash or a PC restart; do not assume a particular encoder or operating system will recover unattended without testing. Keep the PC ventilated. A power backup may help with some local power interruptions, but it does not by itself preserve internet service.
Give the network upload headroom
YouTube recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total streaming bitrate. Include both primary and backup stream bitrates when applicable. A network interruption can break the stream; YouTube’s streaming tips explain the bandwidth guidance. For a stationary PC, wired Ethernet is a reasonable option to investigate for the network link, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee against an ISP outage.

What to expect from a 24/7 broadcast and its archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be archived in full. If you need a complete recording, check YouTube’s current behavior for your stream and plan around the under-12-hour limit described in its encoder guide; do not rely on a single day-long stream as your only copy.
