How to Keep a 24/7 Fireplace Stream Running After a Windows Update

Plan Windows restarts for a maintenance window, configure OBS’s documented launch option, verify YouTube settings, and test the complete recovery sequence before relying on it.

Windows Update and OBS solve different problems: configure Windows to schedule restarts for a maintenance window, then set up and rehearse OBS to launch and start streaming after the PC restarts. Neither active hours nor OBS’s reconnect setting guarantees uninterrupted recovery. The steps below assume a Windows PC running OBS and sending an encoder stream to YouTube; other software or destinations may use different controls.

Prevent updates from restarting the PC at an inconvenient time

In Windows Settings, open Windows Update and review the current controls for active hours and restart scheduling. Set active hours to cover the period when a restart would interrupt your fireplace stream. Active hours help Windows avoid inconvenient automatic restarts; they do not permanently block one. Microsoft notes that a PC may need to restart to finish installing updates. Microsoft’s active-hours guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10.

If Windows says a restart is required, use its restart scheduling control to choose a time when an outage is acceptable. If you need to defer an update temporarily, Windows Update also provides a pause control, but the deferral is limited. Microsoft says updates cannot be stopped entirely and eventually need to be installed. The exact labels and available controls can vary by Windows version and by whether an organization manages the device, so use the current Windows Update screen rather than relying on old screenshots. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains the limits.

If viewers rely on the stream, tell them about a planned interruption or otherwise account for the outage. Do not permanently disable security updates to protect stream uptime; schedule required maintenance instead.

Set OBS to launch and start streaming after a restart

OBS’s launch option and its automatic reconnect setting address different situations. The OBS launch parameter --startstreaming is documented to “Automatically start streaming.” It can be added to an OBS shortcut or used as part of a Windows scheduled-task launch. For a scheduled task, OBS says to set the working directory, or “Start in…”, to the folder containing obs64.exe. Find the actual OBS installation folder on your PC; do not assume a particular path. See the OBS launch-parameters guide.

  1. Choose how OBS will launch. You can add --startstreaming to the OBS shortcut’s target, or configure a Windows Task Scheduler task to launch OBS with that parameter. Follow the OBS launch guide for the shortcut or scheduled-task method.
  2. For a scheduled task, set its working directory. Enter the folder that contains obs64.exe in the task’s “Start in…” field. Use the location on your own PC.
  3. Check the Windows sign-in and task conditions. A task’s trigger, permissions, and whether the relevant user session has started can affect whether OBS opens as intended. The OBS launch documentation does not guarantee recovery for every Windows sign-in or task configuration, so test the arrangement with the account that normally runs the stream.
  4. Confirm the intended OBS profile and scene. Check that the fireplace video source, audio, and streaming destination are available when OBS starts. A launch parameter cannot make a missing file, unavailable source, or invalid destination work.

OBS also has an automatic reconnect option under Settings > Advanced. It may help if the connection drops while OBS remains open, but it does not relaunch OBS after a full Windows reboot. Keep it enabled if it suits your setup, and treat boot-time launch as a separate configuration. See the OBS Advanced settings overview.

Check YouTube’s stream and event settings

An OBS encoder stream needs the YouTube stream URL and stream key. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the intended stream or event is available and that OBS is using the correct URL and key. Treat the key like a password: do not show or share it. Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop controls and choose settings appropriate to how you want the encoder to start and end the stream. YouTube says reusing settings copies those selections. Its guidance for setting up a live stream with an encoder and managing live stream settings describes these controls.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. This is an archive behavior, not a promise that OBS will restart or that a stream will resume after a Windows update. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance when planning a long broadcast.

Rehearse the whole recovery path

Do not rely on a launch setting until you have tested the restart sequence on the PC and Windows account that will run the channel. OBS recommends testing before a stream, and YouTube recommends testing encoder settings and monitoring stream health. Neither platform guarantees that every account, session, source, task, and event configuration will recover unattended.

  1. Start with the intended OBS profile and fireplace scene. Check video, audio, stream destination, and that the stream key is current.
  2. Arrange an update restart at a time when an outage is acceptable, then let the PC complete it.
  3. Check whether Windows starts the expected user session and whether OBS launches and begins streaming. If OBS opens but does not stream, check the launch parameter and destination settings.
  4. Check the YouTube preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Then verify public playback from another device, rather than assuming that an open OBS window means viewers can see the stream.
  5. If any step fails, correct the task trigger or permissions, account/session behavior, OBS profile or source availability, network connection, YouTube event state, or stream key as applicable, and repeat the rehearsal.

For platform-specific testing advice, see the OBS streaming guide and YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance.

Troubleshoot common restart failures

  • OBS does not open after Windows restarts: Check the scheduled task’s trigger, permissions, working directory, and the conditions for the Windows user session. Confirm that the task launches the OBS executable on this PC.
  • OBS opens but does not start streaming: Confirm that the launch command includes --startstreaming, then check the selected OBS profile and YouTube destination.
  • OBS shows a connection problem while still running: Review OBS’s automatic reconnect setting and the network connection. Reconnect is for a running OBS instance, not for starting it after a reboot.
  • YouTube does not begin the expected event: Check that the intended event is available, its auto-start and auto-stop choices are appropriate, and OBS has the correct stream URL and key.
  • The stream starts but the fireplace picture or sound is missing: Check that the scene, media source, file location, and audio routing are still available after sign-in.
  • The stream appears healthy in OBS but is not viewable: Check YouTube’s preview and stream health, then confirm playback from another device. An OBS window alone does not verify the public stream.
