Shuffle alone changes the sequence; it does not guarantee that every song will play once before any song repeats. For stronger variety, use a broad, accurately tagged library, separate tracks into meaningful playlists, and add artist or album separation only when enough eligible recordings remain.
Why shuffle alone may not solve the problem
A shuffled playlist can sound less predictable than a fixed sequence, but the meaning of “shuffle” depends on the playout system. Some systems reshuffle a list each time a loop ends; that changes the next sequence without necessarily enforcing a no-repeat period. For example, playout.video says its playlist is reshuffled at the end of each loop and recommends a long shuffled playlist for music channels. If the same track should not return for a defined period, look for a control named track separation, repeat protection, or “not played recently.” It uses playback history to keep recently played tracks out of the eligible pool. Artist and album separation are separate controls: they can prevent a different song by the same artist, or another track from the same album, from appearing too soon.
Set up rotation in a practical order
- Build a broad, rights-cleared library. More eligible recordings give the automation more choices. Check that track, artist, and album tags are accurate; separation rules cannot reliably group recordings when their metadata is missing or inconsistent.
- Enable shuffle or random-track selection. This varies the running order. If the platform offers a “not played recently” filter or track repeat window, enable it as the next layer rather than treating shuffle as a repeat guarantee.
- Choose a track-history window that fits your library. Start conservatively and inspect the play history. A longer window can reduce repeats, but a small library may not contain enough eligible tracks to satisfy it while keeping playback going.
- Add artist or album separation only if the pool can support it. These rules narrow the eligible pool further. Watch the automation log for warnings or signs that restrictions are being relaxed so playback can continue.
- Divide the library into meaningful pools. For example, make separate playlists for different aarti selections or moods. If the system supports weighted rotation, set how often each pool contributes; if it supports recurring scheduled events or dayparts, use those for distinct morning and evening programming.
- Listen to the live output and review the now-playing view or log. Confirm that the audience hears the intended rotation and that repeat or separation rules are being applied as expected.
Choose controls that match the kind of repetition you hear

How library size and metadata affect repeat rules
Every separation rule reduces the tracks available for the next selection. A long track window combined with strict artist and album windows can leave a small library with too few eligible recordings. Use schedules without making the whole stream predictable
Scheduled playlists are useful when the time of day matters—for example, when you want a distinct morning selection and a different evening selection. Let a broader random or weighted rotation handle the unscheduled hours. Avoid using a fixed repeating sequence of specific songs as the default if your aim is to make the running order less predictable.

Rotation types are not interchangeable. Separate music rotation from stream delivery
Playlist automation decides which recording plays next. Stream hosting or encoder software delivers the audio and video to YouTube. A tool may handle one job without handling the other, so check whether your setup has both a selection system and a reliable way to keep the live stream running.
