In YouTube Live Control Room, red means a critical stream-health error and yellow means a moderate error. Red errors may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow errors may degrade quality. Neither color identifies the cause by itself: read the timestamped message beside the Health Indicator and follow its specific instructions. YouTube’s reviewed help pages do not define a complete color legend or a precise green threshold.
What red and yellow mean
| Color | YouTube’s severity | Possible effect | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red | Critical | May inhibit the event from starting or cause viewers to have problems. | Read the adjacent error and correct the setting it identifies. |
| Yellow | Moderate | May cause degraded quality during the event. | Read the adjacent error and address the named issue; do not assume the stream has stopped. |
These severity descriptions come from YouTube Help’s stream health guidance. The color indicates seriousness, not a specific fault. A yellow warning can affect quality without meaning the broadcast is entirely interrupted, while a red warning signals a critical issue whose actual cause still depends on the message.
What green means—and what YouTube does not specify
The official help pages cited here define red and yellow errors, but do not establish a complete color legend or a precise green threshold. Do not treat green as a guarantee of perfect audio and video, or infer a universal technical condition from it. Use the displayed health information and check the preview and stream itself.
Read the message before changing settings
- Note the color and timestamp. The timestamp helps identify when YouTube observed the issue.
- Read the full message beside the Health Indicator. YouTube says the message contains specific error information and corrective instructions.
- Find the setting category it names. Common categories include format or codec, bitrate, audio/video tracks, frame rate, keyframes, resolution, and primary/backup stream configuration.
- Change the named setting, then monitor the indicator. An unfixed error continues to appear. Check whether the same message recurs after the correction.
- Test the complete setup before the event. Use representative audio and movement, check the preview, and monitor audio and video quality.
YouTube’s error reference provides examples and fixes. The right correction depends on the exact error and encoder; changing unrelated settings based only on color can introduce new problems.

Common stream-health errors and their fixes
Format or codec is unsupported
Check the container and audio/video codecs against the current encoder guidance. YouTube’s format summary points to H.264 video and AAC audio; its specific audio examples also list AAC or MP3 as supported. Follow the exact message and the current guidance for your encoder rather than assuming every format combination is valid.
Bitrate does not match the selected resolution or available upload
Check that the bitrate is appropriate for the resolution selected for ingestion and that your connection can sustain it. YouTube’s error examples note that insufficient bandwidth may require lowering the chosen resolution. Use the current YouTube encoder settings table for your resolution and codec: recommendations vary. For example, its table lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps with AV1/H.265 and 14 Mbps with H.264; for 720p at 30 fps it lists 6 Mbps with AV1/H.265 and 8 Mbps with H.264.

Audio or video tracks are missing or configured incorrectly
Check that the required audio and video streams are present and that the channel count and video format are supported. YouTube’s examples include missing or multiple streams, channel-count issues, interlaced video, and excessive frame rate. Compare the encoder output with the precise warning rather than changing every track setting at once.
Keyframe frequency is outside guidance
YouTube recommends sending keyframes every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Set the keyframe interval in your encoder accordingly, then test and watch for the same warning or buffering-related message.

Input resolution does not match the selected ingestion resolution
Confirm that the video dimensions being sent by the encoder match the resolution selected for the YouTube stream. A mismatch can trigger a resolution error; correct the output dimensions or the selected resolution so they agree.
Primary and backup streams do not match
If using primary and backup ingestion, compare their resolution, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency, and audio settings. YouTube’s error examples identify mismatches in these settings as potential failover problems; align both streams where the message indicates a discrepancy.

Check upload capacity and test before going live
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload capacity and recommends leaving 20% headroom. If sending primary and backup streams, allow capacity for both streams plus that recommended headroom. These are YouTube’s configuration recommendations, not guarantees of a particular audience experience.
- Use the current YouTube encoder guidance for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
- Test with representative motion and audio, inspect the preview, and monitor health messages before and during the event.
- If a warning concerns unstable delivery or bitrate, compare the configured bitrate with sustained upload capacity, not just the connection’s advertised download speed.
