Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

OBS does not run as a simple headless streaming service: most Azure Linux VMs start without a desktop environment, and performance depends on the VM’s graphics and network capabilities.
Check the Azure VM before installing OBS
First identify the Linux distribution and release, VM size, and whether the VM has a supported graphics path. The title does not specify these details, so there is no single installation command or performance promise that applies to every Azure Linux VM.
- Check the operating system and release; use installation instructions that match them.
- Plan how you will access a graphical desktop. Microsoft says most Azure Linux VMs do not include one by default.
- Check whether the VM and its driver support the graphics workload you intend to run. A GPU listed in a VM specification does not by itself prove OBS is using it.
- Check the VM size’s outbound bandwidth allocation. YouTube’s recommended bitrate is not a guarantee that the VM can sustain that rate.
OBS lists X Window System or Wayland and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU among its Linux/Unix requirements. Meeting basic compatibility requirements does not guarantee a particular resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, or encoder workload will perform adequately. OBS system requirements

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studiosudo apt updatesudo apt install obs-studio
For another distribution or an older Ubuntu release, do not assume these commands apply. Follow the installation method listed for your system on the official OBS download page, which lists Flatpak and an Ubuntu PPA. The current download page is the more specific reference for the PPA’s Ubuntu release scope.
Provide a graphical session and connect to the VM
SSH is a common way to administer an Azure Linux VM, but OBS needs a graphical display session. Microsoft documents an Ubuntu-focused desktop and xrdp setup; those directions are not universal Linux instructions.

Use xrdp over an SSH tunnel or direct RDP
For Ubuntu, follow Microsoft’s Linux remote desktop guidance to install and configure a desktop environment and xrdp. If you connect directly, the network security group (NSG) needs a TCP 3389 rule. Restrict access as narrowly as possible rather than exposing remote desktop broadly. Microsoft also describes reaching xrdp through an SSH tunnel, which avoids opening public RDP access. Internet remote desktop can feel noticeably laggier than a local desktop, so the remote display itself may be a poor way to judge stream smoothness.
Use SSH or Azure Bastion for administration
Use SSH for routine administration. Microsoft identifies SSH as the common connection method for Linux VMs and describes Azure Bastion as an option when a VM has no public IP. These access methods do not remove OBS’s requirement for a working graphical display.

Verify graphics and rendering before configuring a stream
Determine whether OBS is using the intended rendering path instead of assuming a GPU VM will automatically provide acceleration. Microsoft notes that the GPU must be in the rendering path, a supported driver must be installed, and the remote display path must use the GPU. Driver support depends on the selected VM SKU and operating system. If you cannot verify GPU rendering, treat the workload as potentially CPU-bound and test it at the intended scene complexity and output settings.
OBS’s CPU demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A simple scene and a complex scene with multiple sources can place very different loads on the same VM. Check the stream and system load under realistic conditions before scheduling a long broadcast.

Set YouTube output settings from the target quality and measured capacity
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS delivery and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS for secure transport, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Choose a codec supported by your OBS encoder and YouTube workflow, then use that codec’s bitrate guidance rather than applying H.264 figures to another codec. YouTube live encoder settings
H.264 reference bitrates
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, not measured Azure throughput or a guarantee of sustained capacity. Microsoft says outbound throughput is bounded by the VM’s allocated bandwidth, which varies by VM size. Check the allocation for the actual VM and test sustained upload before choosing an output rate. For AV1 or H.265, consult YouTube’s codec-specific table rather than reusing the H.264 numbers.

Audio and keyframes
- For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo.
- YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo audio.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
In OBS, select the encoder and output resolution and frame rate you intend to use, then set bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, and audio settings to match YouTube’s guidance. Exact menu labels can vary with OBS version and encoder; verify the resulting output settings rather than relying on a label from another release.

- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and copy its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream key using the available option in your OBS version.
- In Settings > Output, choose the encoder and set the bitrate mode and video bitrate. In Settings > Video, choose the intended resolution and frame rate. Set audio to a YouTube-compatible format and sample rate.
- Start a test stream before the real broadcast. Include representative motion and audio; a static screen alone will not reveal how the planned content behaves.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and OBS for dropped frames or encoder overload while the test runs. Reduce output demands or resolve the VM’s network or rendering bottleneck if the test is unstable.
YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, using representative motion and audio, and monitoring stream health during the event. A successful short test is useful evidence, but does not establish that every future network condition or workload will be stable. YouTube’s live streaming guidance
Check copyright and channel eligibility before going live
Technical readiness does not grant rights to the material in a broadcast. Use footage, music, narration, and other media you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright rules before publishing. A valid stream key and a healthy signal do not prevent a copyright claim or establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization rules for reused content.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS opens but no usable desktop is available | The VM has no desktop environment or graphical session. | Install and configure a desktop and display path appropriate to the distribution; OBS requires X Window System or Wayland. |
| OBS installation commands fail | The PPA commands do not match the VM’s distribution or Ubuntu release. | Identify the operating system and release, then use the corresponding method on the OBS download page. The documented PPA commands apply to Ubuntu 24.04 and newer. |
| Remote desktop is sluggish | Internet RDP introduces input and display latency. | Consider an SSH tunnel for xrdp access, and do not treat remote desktop responsiveness alone as a measure of stream output performance. |
| High CPU use, rendering lag, or encoder overload | The selected encoder, graphics path, output settings, or scene complexity exceeds what the VM can handle. | Verify the renderer and driver, simplify the scene, or test a lower resolution or frame rate. Do not assume the VM’s GPU is active. |
| YouTube reports unstable stream health or dropped frames | The selected bitrate may exceed sustained outbound capacity, or the VM/network may be under load. | Check the VM size’s bandwidth allocation, test upload under realistic conditions, and lower bitrate or output demands if needed. |
| Audio is absent or incompatible | The selected audio device, codec, bitrate, or sample rate is not configured as intended. | Test representative audio and confirm AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, with YouTube’s stereo recommendations of 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. |
