To improve YouTube Live quality, match your encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate to the upload speed your connection can sustain, then test the full setup before going live. If the picture is poor, check the source and encoder before blaming the network; if the stream buffers or drops frames, measure upload capacity and leave headroom.
Start with the signal path, not a new camera
Live quality depends on the whole chain: camera and audio sources, encoder settings and performance, outbound internet connection, and YouTube’s processing and playback. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into formats for viewers, so your main job is to send it a stable, correctly configured stream. YouTube Help’s official guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends checking stream health and diagnosing source, encoder and network issues systematically.
- Check the source: look at the camera framing, focus, lighting and audio. Inspect the local recording to see whether a problem is already present before the feed reaches YouTube.
- Check the encoder: look for encoder errors and excessive CPU load. Confirm that the selected resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate agree with one another.
- Check the connection: if the encoder preview and local recording look healthy but the YouTube feed does not, test sustained outbound bandwidth and connection stability.
- Check YouTube: inspect Live Control Room stream health and messages, and compare reports from viewers on different connections.
Buying equipment before this diagnosis can waste money: a better camera may help when the source is the limiting factor, but it will not correct a weak upload connection or an overloaded encoder.
Choose YouTube Live encoder settings
YouTube Help’s current recommended ingest bitrate values are below. They are guidance for the incoming stream, not a guarantee of a particular playback quality. Pick the highest resolution and bitrate your actual connection can sustain reliably, rather than maximizing settings on paper.

| Resolution / frame rate | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p / 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p / 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p / 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |

| 720p / 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p / 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p / 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations current as accessed in 2026. The H.264 and AV1/H.265 columns are not interchangeable: use the values for the codec you actually send. A high target bitrate cannot recover detail if the source is soft, and it cannot stabilize a connection that cannot carry the stream.
Other encoder parameters
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1, subject to support in your encoder and the applicable YouTube guidance.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: 2 seconds recommended, and no more than 4 seconds.
- Video format: square pixels and progressive scan. Use Rec. 709 for SDR. YouTube’s listed guidance recommends H.265 for HDR and does not support AV1 for HDR.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. For stereo, 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; for 5.1, 48 kHz and 384 kbps. YouTube’s listed guidance supports 5.1 only for AAC over RTMP/RTMPS.
See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for its complete current guidance.
How much upload speed do you need?
Use upload speed, not download speed, to decide whether a connection can sustain a live stream. Run a test under conditions resembling the event, then leave 20% upload headroom, as YouTube recommends. Count the combined bitrate of primary and backup streams if both are sending, and allow for other people and devices using the connection.

For example, a stream configured at 17 Mbps needs more than 17 Mbps of usable outbound capacity: the recommended headroom alone makes the target at least 21.25 Mbps, before accounting for other concurrent traffic or a backup feed. A speed-test result is a measurement at a point in time, not proof that bandwidth will remain available throughout an event.
If tests show the connection is unstable or insufficient, reduce the bitrate and, if needed, resolution or frame rate until the feed is stable. YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider when connection tests indicate a problem. A faster advertised download plan is not, by itself, evidence that upload performance is adequate.
Test before the event
Build a test around the real show rather than a static screen: include the same kind of motion and audio you expect during the event. YouTube recommends preparing the stream at least two hours beforehand and starting the encoder 15 minutes before the event.

- Set up the event and configure the encoder in advance.
- Send a test with representative video and audio.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public event.
- Once live, monitor stream health and messages for errors.
- Confirm that the local archive exists and is growing; review it to distinguish a source or encoder problem from an issue farther along the path.
- Verify that the stream is reachable from the channel or watch page and on mobile devices.
- If you use a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, and confirm that the viewer player rolls to the backup.

Fix blurry video, buffering and dropped frames
The picture is soft, blocky or unstable
- Check the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate against YouTube’s recommended values.
- Check Live Control Room for encoder errors and inspect CPU load. Review the local recording: if it has the same defect, the problem exists before YouTube receives the feed.
- Inspect source framing, focus and lighting, along with the video and audio sources routed to the encoder.
- If the source and encoder output look healthy, test outbound internet strength and stability. Contact your ISP if the tests point to a connection problem.
The stream buffers or drops frames
Measure sustained upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom, account for other network users and include backup feeds in the total. If the connection cannot sustain the configured stream, lower bitrate, resolution or frame rate and test again. A particular adjustment is not guaranteed to resolve every failure; use stream health and the test feed to verify the result.
The stream will not start
If you use a third-party encoder with a stream key, verify the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder if needed. If you sign in to YouTube through third-party streaming software without using a stream key, YouTube directs users to that software’s support team. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
Viewers report problems, but your preview looks fine
Ask whether reports come from viewers on different internet connections. YouTube notes that reports from many viewers can point to the live encoder; check its diagnostics and stream health messages. YouTube transcodes for a range of devices and network conditions, but that does not make every viewer’s playback conditions identical.

Choose latency for the kind of event you’re running
Latency is the delay between capture by the camera or encoder and appearance to viewers. Lower latency can make interaction more immediate, but may increase playback buffering. If your event does not rely on live audience interaction, reducing delay may matter less than maintaining stable playback. YouTube says the 2160p (4K) option does not offer low latency and is optimized for quality at normal latency. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
