How to Improve Mic Quality in Streamlabs Desktop

Select the right mic, set a clean level, and apply only the filters that solve the sound problem you hear. This guide walks through Streamlabs Desktop settings, monitoring, room fixes, and troubleshooting.

To improve mic quality in Streamlabs Desktop, first select the right microphone and set its level so normal speech peaks in the mixer’s yellow area without hitting red. Then address the sound you actually hear: use gentle noise suppression for steady background noise, a gate or expander for sounds between words, and compression to smooth volume swings. Monitor the processed signal after each change; better room acoustics and mic placement often help more than adding filters.

1. Select the correct microphone and set its level

  1. In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Audio and choose the intended device under Mic/Auxiliary Device. Check that it is not accidentally using a webcam microphone or another input. Control names can vary slightly by version.
  2. Speak in your normal streaming voice while watching the microphone channel in the mixer. Streamlabs recommends peaks in the yellow area and warns that red can sound distorted. Its guide does not specify a universal numeric dBFS target, so use the meter and your own listening rather than treating a particular number as mandatory.
  3. If your voice is hard to hear against game, video, or desktop audio, lower the competing desktop channel before raising mic gain. More gain raises the microphone signal, but can also make room noise more obvious.

Set a clean input level before adding filters. Processing cannot reliably repair clipping that has already happened at the microphone or audio interface.

2. Choose a filter for the sound you want to fix

Audible problem Useful control What it does
Steady fan or air-conditioning noise Noise Suppression Reduces persistent background sounds. Too much can affect the voice, so add only as much as needed.
Keyboard or room sounds during pauses Noise Gate or Expander A gate reduces or closes the mic when the signal falls below its threshold; an expander reduces quieter signals more gradually.
Voice level varies between quiet and loud phrases Compressor Reduces signal above a threshold to make loudness more consistent. Output gain can restore average presence after compression.
Occasional peaks in the output Limiter Caps output at a set maximum; it does not undo clipping already recorded at the input.
Desktop sound should dip while you speak Sidechain compression Uses the voice signal to reduce desktop audio during speech.

3. Add and tune filters one at a time

Noise suppression for constant noise

  1. Open the microphone channel’s filter controls and add Noise Suppression.
  2. Streamlabs’ mic-quality guide notes that the filter may default to -30 and that this can be too strong. It recommends starting at 0, then monitoring and adjusting until the background noise is no longer picked up. Treat that as a starting recommendation, not a guaranteed setting for every mic or room.
  3. Listen to both speech and pauses. If the voice becomes thin, muffled, or unnatural, ease the suppression back. A noise-suppression filter is not a substitute for lowering the noise at its source.

Gate or expander for sounds between words

A gate uses an open threshold and a close threshold: audio opens the gate when it rises above the open threshold, and the gate closes as the level falls below the close threshold. Streamlabs gives -26 dB as an example threshold and suggests setting the close threshold about 5 dB below the open threshold. These are examples, not universal values; adjust them for your voice and microphone.

If the gate cuts off the start or end of words, lower the open threshold or change the timing until speech sounds natural. An expander is a less binary option when a gate sounds abrupt. Streamlabs’ guide offers attack timing of 5–10 ms and release timing of 50–120 ms as suggested starting ranges, not mandatory settings. Make small adjustments and listen for clipped syllables, abrupt cutoffs, and noise returning too quickly.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Compression and limiting for level control

Add a compressor when speech level varies enough to be distracting. It reduces signal above its threshold; output gain can then bring the average voice level back up. Avoid using output gain to compensate for an input that was set too low if doing so makes background noise prominent. A limiter can cap peaks in the processed output. Neither filter repairs distortion caused by a clipped microphone or interface signal upstream.

Streamlabs also lists Invert Polarity for advanced setups, mainly to help address phase issues with multiple microphones. It is not a routine first step for a single mic.

4. Monitor the result, not just the meter

  1. In the microphone’s advanced audio settings, set Audio Monitoring to Monitor Only to hear the processed mic signal, as Streamlabs recommends.
  2. Make one filter or setting change at a time. Compare a normal sentence, a pause, a louder phrase, and any sound that tends to trigger the problem.
  3. Keep the change only if it improves the voice without introducing pumping, muffling, clipped word endings, or distracting background noise. Recheck the mixer meter while speaking at your usual volume.

5. Reduce noise and echo before buying gear

  • Move the microphone away from loud fans or air-conditioning and position it so it captures your voice clearly without pointing directly at the noise source.
  • Reduce room reflections with soft materials such as rugs and curtains. Streamlabs notes that even a good microphone cannot fully compensate for a noisy or echoey environment.
  • A cardioid pickup pattern may help when it suits your setup and placement, but it does not eliminate room noise from every direction.
  • Mechanical keyboard noise may remain audible even with suppression. A gate can reduce it during pauses, while microphone placement and a quieter environment address the source more directly.

A replacement microphone is optional. Streamlabs describes USB microphones as beginner-friendly and plug-and-play; XLR microphones require an audio interface or mixer. The sources do not establish that buying a microphone by itself fixes a noisy or echoey room, and they do not recommend a specific model. Work on placement, room sound, input level, and filter tuning first.

6. Optional noise-removal routes

NVIDIA Broadcast

Streamlabs documents using NVIDIA Broadcast as an audio input device in Streamlabs Desktop. After configuring its microphone noise-removal effect, select NVIDIA Broadcast as the audio input for the microphone source in Streamlabs and listen to the result. Verify the selected device and processed sound in your own setup rather than assuming the change worked.

7. Troubleshoot common mic problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No microphone signal Wrong input selected or the intended device is unavailable Check Settings > Audio and the Mic/Auxiliary Device selection; confirm the intended device appears and the mixer channel responds while speaking.
Voice sounds distorted Meter reaches red or the input was clipped before processing Lower the microphone input level and check the meter while speaking normally. Do not expect a limiter to repair upstream clipping.
Fan or air-conditioning remains audible Suppression is too light, or the noise is reaching the mic strongly Adjust suppression gradually while monitoring; move the mic away from the source and reduce the noise where possible.
Voice sounds muffled or unnatural Suppression is too strong or multiple processing changes are interacting Reduce suppression and compare after each adjustment. Keep only processing that preserves a natural voice.
Words are cut off at the start or end Gate threshold or timing is too aggressive Adjust the open/close thresholds or timing, or try an expander for a more gradual reduction.
Voice is buried under desktop audio Competing desktop sound is too loud Lower the desktop channel; if appropriate, use sidechain compression to duck it while speaking.
Monitoring does not reveal the processed mic Monitoring is not set to the intended mode Check the microphone’s advanced audio settings and select Monitor Only, then listen again.
