There is no authoritative one-size-fits-all amount of Halloween candy to buy. Estimate your local turnout, decide how many pieces you want to offer each visitor, and use the package count to work out what to purchase. For the handout, offer a piece or small selection, keep treats commercially wrapped, and prepare a safe, clear route to your door.
How much candy should you buy?
No official per-child amount or reliable national trick-or-treater count is established by the sources cited here. Your own past turnout, neighbors’ experience, and local events are more useful than a supposed national rule.
- Estimate how many visitors your household is likely to get, using local experience where possible.
- Choose how many pieces you want to offer each visitor.
- Multiply visitors by pieces per visitor, then compare the result with the piece count on candy packages.
For example, if you expect 40 visitors and plan to offer two pieces each, the arithmetic is 40 × 2 = 80 pieces. That is an estimate based on those assumptions, not a general Halloween standard. If turnout is hard to predict, consider a package format you can store or use later rather than buying to an unsupported pounds-per-visitor rule.
FDA guidance recommends commercially wrapped treats. Individually wrapped fun-size candy is a practical format; an assorted pack can make it easy to offer a choice, but no particular brand or package size is established as best. A serving bowl is optional if it makes distribution easier.

What is the etiquette for handing out treats?
When visitors come to the door, greet them and offer a piece or a small selection. How much is customary varies by community and household. An Axios Salt Lake City reader survey reflected differing local views about quantities and late-night visits; it does not establish a national rule.
A lit porch is often used as an invitation signal, but the cited sources are chiefly safety guidance rather than evidence of a universal custom. If you leave a bowl unattended, be aware that it may be emptied quickly; there is no reliable protocol that ensures an even share for each visitor. Supervised handout gives you more control over quantities and lets you offer non-food alternatives directly.

How can you make the handout safer and more inclusive?
Keep candy wrapped and check it at home
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises: “Tell children not to accept – and especially not to eat – anything that isn’t commercially wrapped.” It also advises children to wait until they get home for an adult to inspect their treats, check labels for allergens, and discard items with suspicious appearance, discoloration, pinholes, or tears. The FDA recommends that children eat a meal or snack before trick-or-treating and not snack from their goody bags along the route.
Be transparent about ingredients
Check ingredient labels rather than assuming a treat is suitable for everyone. Health Canada’s Halloween food-safety guidance lists peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, milk, and eggs among common candy allergens. That Canadian list is not exhaustive for every jurisdiction or every person’s needs, so do not describe generic candy as safe for all visitors.

Offer non-food treats thoughtfully
Non-food items can give visitors who cannot eat candy another option. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests examples such as stickers, pencils, bubbles, bookmarks, stencils, glow sticks, and finger puppets. For young children, avoid small objects or parts that can detach and become choking hazards. The AAP cautions against hard candy, gum, small candies, gummy candy, popcorn, pumpkin seeds, and whole nuts for babies and toddlers; the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission also warns that novelty items for young children should not be small enough to choke on or contain components that can separate and create a choking hazard.

- Remove trip hazards such as hoses, toys, and bikes, and sweep wet leaves from sidewalks and steps.
- Check that outdoor lights are working and restrain pets.
- Keep candlelit pumpkins away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush against flames. The AAP suggests considering a battery-operated flameless candle, flashlight, or glow stick instead.
These steps follow recommendations from the AAP and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
