Start the broadcast from that encoder; it sends the video into Talk Studio for delivery to the selected destinations.
What Talk Studio Stream Forwarding does
Streamlabs calls this feature Stream Forwarding or RTMP-In. The encoder creates and sends the broadcast signal; Talk Studio receives it and routes it to the linked destinations you select. This is useful when you need a workflow built around Zoom, custom scenes or layouts, multiple camera sources, or more than nine people on screen. The instructions below follow Streamlabs’ forwarding guide, updated April 25, 2025. Streamlabs Talk Studio Stream Forwarding guide.
Forwarding is different from starting a broadcast wholly inside Talk Studio: with forwarding, the external encoder is where you produce and start the signal. Streamlabs’ guide says LinkedIn and Twitter are not supported as forwarding destinations. Check your intended destination in Talk Studio before going live, since compatibility and menus may change.
What you need before you start
- A Talk Studio account and the destination accounts linked to it.
- An encoder that supports a custom RTMP server, such as Streamlabs Desktop, OBS, or Zoom.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected resolution.
- The Talk Studio ingest server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a signal to your stream.
Streamlabs’ Getting Started guide, retrieved October 3, 2026, lists 5 Mbps as the minimum upload speed and recommends a stable connection, preferably Ethernet. These figures describe the guide’s stated upload capacity for the broadcast; allow headroom for other devices and activity on the same connection. Ethernet is a preference, not a required part of RTMP-In setup.
Forward Talk Studio to Streamlabs Desktop
- Open forwarding settings. Sign in to Talk Studio and go to Account Settings > Stream Forwarding.
- Choose destinations. Select the linked destinations that should receive this broadcast. Do not choose LinkedIn or Twitter for this workflow; Streamlabs lists them as unsupported for forwarding.
- Set the broadcast details. Enter the stream title and description, then save. Confirm the destinations and details before continuing.
- Open the encoder’s stream settings. In Streamlabs Desktop, select the settings gear, then Stream > Stream Type > Custom Streaming Server.
- Transfer both connection values. Copy Talk Studio’s Ingest Server URL into the server field and its Stream key into the key field. Save the settings. Copy carefully, and do not show the key in a public screenshot or recording.
- Start the broadcast from Streamlabs Desktop. Select Go Live. The encoder sends the signal to Talk Studio, which forwards it to the destinations you selected.
Connect OBS, Zoom, or another encoder
The same connection principle applies outside Streamlabs Desktop: choose the encoder’s custom RTMP or custom server option, then enter the Talk Studio ingest server URL and stream key in the matching fields. Start the broadcast from the encoder, not from a separate Talk Studio start control. Menu names and locations differ by application, so use that encoder’s current instructions for its custom-server fields. Verify both values and your selected destinations before going live.

Choose between Talk Studio and an external encoder

Check the connection and destination before going live
- Use a stable connection; Streamlabs prefers Ethernet. Check that upload capacity meets the guide’s figure for your resolution.
- Make sure the intended destinations are selected and the title and description are saved in Talk Studio.
- Confirm the ingest URL and stream key are in their matching encoder fields. A swapped or incomplete value prevents the encoder from connecting correctly.
- Keep the stream key confidential. If it has been exposed, replace or reset it in the relevant service before relying on it again.
Troubleshooting
The encoder will not connect
Recheck that you selected the custom RTMP/server mode, pasted the Talk Studio ingest URL into the server field, and put the stream key in the key field. Save the settings and retry. A copied space, missing character, or value in the wrong field can break the connection.
The stream is unstable or drops
Check upload capacity and network stability, especially if other devices are using the connection. Compare your available upload speed with Streamlabs’ resolution recommendations above; try a wired connection if Wi-Fi is unreliable. The guide’s figures are targets, not a guarantee that a particular network will sustain a stream.

A destination does not receive the broadcast
Return to Account Settings > Stream Forwarding and confirm the destination was selected and the stream details saved. LinkedIn and Twitter are not supported for this forwarding workflow according to Streamlabs’ guide. If a supported destination still does not receive the broadcast, check current Talk Studio and destination-service status and setup guidance.
