If YouTube Live Control Room warns, “Please correct the sample rate for audio in the stream to 44.1 KHz,” set FFmpeg’s outgoing stereo audio to 44,100 Hz. Put -ar:a 44100 among the output options before the RTMP/RTMPS destination, and confirm the resulting stream and Live Control Room health status. For 5.1 surround, YouTube’s live guidance instead specifies 48 kHz.
Choose the sample rate for your channel layout
YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. Its documented correction for the sample-rate error is 44.1 kHz. Use the live-stream guidance rather than a separate recommendation for uploading videos. YouTube’s live encoder settings and live streaming error messages cover these recommendations.
| Live audio layout | YouTube sample rate | RTMP/RTMPS codec guidance | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stereo | 44.1 kHz | AAC or MP3 | 128 Kbps |
| 5.1 surround | 48 kHz | AAC only for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS | 384 Kbps |
These are YouTube’s listed live-stream settings, not measurements of your particular stream. If you are sending stereo audio, do not apply the 5.1 rate simply because the source file happens to use 48 kHz; FFmpeg can resample the output.
Set FFmpeg’s outgoing audio rate
FFmpeg’s -ar option sets the output audio sampling frequency. Without an output override, FFmpeg defaults to the corresponding input stream’s rate. Add the option with the output settings, after the relevant input and before the output URL. For one outgoing audio stream, a typical pattern is:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
-map 0:a:0 -c:a aac -ar:a 44100 -b:a 128k
This is an output-option pattern, not a complete streaming command. Replace 0:a:0 with the intended audio stream from your input, keep your existing video settings and RTMP/RTMPS destination, and place these options before that destination. The 128 Kbps value is YouTube’s recommended stereo bitrate. The pattern is not verified against a specific FFmpeg build, input, or ingest session. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation for option syntax.

ffmpeg -i input-file -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v YOUR_VIDEO_CODEC_OPTIONS -c:a aac -ar:a 44100 -b:a 128k YOUR_RTMP_OR_RTMPS_URL
Replace the example placeholders with your actual video options and destination. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, so keep the audio settings in the output portion, before the output URL. If the command writes multiple outputs, scope and position the settings for the YouTube output specifically.
Check stream selection, codec, and emitted audio
- Confirm the intended layout. Choose stereo or 5.1 before setting the rate; use 44.1 kHz for YouTube stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1.
- Map the audio stream if needed. FFmpeg may select streams automatically.
-map 0:a:0selects the first audio stream from input 0; confirm that it is the audio you want, and ensure the output contains one intended audio stream. - Use a supported codec. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS audio. For 5.1 over these protocols, YouTube specifies AAC only. For stereo, its recommended bitrate is 128 Kbps.
- Inspect the output summary or probe the emitted stream. Verify the outgoing audio reports 44100 Hz for stereo (or 48000 Hz for 5.1), rather than relying only on the source file’s properties.
- Test in Live Control Room before the event. Check the exact health message after connecting, then monitor stream health while live. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring health during it; see its live stream troubleshooting guidance.
Diagnose the exact Live Control Room warning
A sample-rate warning is not the same as an error saying YouTube receives no audio or receives multiple audio streams. Read the full message before changing settings. If the problem is missing audio or multiple streams, verify that the intended audio is present and that your mapping produces the desired output; changing the sample rate alone will not fix those conditions. YouTube’s error-message guidance distinguishes these cases.

Common causes and fixes
- The source rate is still being used: Add the output-side
-ar:a 44100for stereo. FFmpeg otherwise defaults to the corresponding input rate. - The option is in the wrong position: Move it into the output options after the input declaration and before the YouTube output URL.
- The wrong stream is mapped: Check the input’s stream list and select the intended audio stream explicitly with
-mapwhen necessary. - YouTube reports no audio: Confirm that an audio stream is actually mapped and encoded in the output.
- YouTube reports multiple audio streams: Review automatic stream selection and explicit mappings so the output contains only the intended audio stream.
- The stream is 5.1 but configured like stereo: Use the 48 kHz 5.1 recommendation and AAC for RTMP/RTMPS, rather than the stereo settings.
- The warning persists despite the expected output rate: Check the final FFmpeg output summary or probe the stream, then compare it with the exact Live Control Room message. The complete command, selected streams, codec, and channel layout matter; the rate setting alone cannot diagnose every ingest problem.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with prerecorded video, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded video, not camera broadcasting. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
