YouTube comments can be missing because of a video’s settings, an account or network restriction, or a problem with the app or browser. First check whether the issue affects one video or every video, and whether you can’t see comments or can’t post them. That simple split points to the right fix.
Identify what is failing
Try a second video that normally has comments, then compare the YouTube app with a browser. Note whether the comments are absent, stuck loading, or visible but unusable. For a creator, also check whether comments are missing only in YouTube Studio or on the public video.
| What you observe | First place to check |
|---|---|
| Comments missing on one video | The video’s privacy, audience, and comment settings |
| Comments missing on every video | Restricted Mode, account supervision, or a browser, device, or network issue |
| Comments load in the app but not a browser, or vice versa | The browser profile, extensions, or app |
| You can read comments but cannot write them | Whether the account is supervised, or whether the comment is being restricted or held |
| The section spins or stays blank | Compare another browser, device, account, and network before clearing data |
If the problem changes when you switch accounts or networks, that is more useful than immediately clearing all browser data: it helps separate an account restriction from a local or network problem.
Check whether comments are unavailable by design
One video has no comments
The creator may have turned comments off or paused them. Comments are also unavailable on videos designated “Made for Kids” and on private videos, according to YouTube’s comment settings guidance. YouTube may also restrict commenting on particular content.

If you are only watching, there is no device-side fix for a creator’s setting or a content restriction. Try another video to confirm whether the problem is limited to that one.
The video is marked “Made for Kids”
YouTube disables comments on content designated as “Made for Kids.” That applies to the content designation, not simply to the viewer’s age. It is different from an age-restricted video. YouTube explains its audience designation in its Made for Kids guidance and lists related unavailable features in its feature restrictions information.
Creators should not change a video’s audience setting just to restore comments. The designation must accurately reflect the content and applicable requirements. If YouTube assigned the designation incorrectly, review the video’s Audience setting in Studio and use the Appeal option if it is offered.
Comments are hidden by Restricted Mode
YouTube says viewers cannot see comments while Restricted Mode is on. On a computer, sign in, select your profile picture, choose Restricted Mode near the bottom of the menu, then turn off Activate Restricted Mode. See YouTube’s Restricted Mode instructions.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchRestricted Mode can be applied at the browser or device level, so check the browser profile and device you are using. It may also be enforced through Family Link, a managed school or work account, an administrator, a mobile carrier filter, router controls, DNS filtering, a VPN, or security software. If the setting is locked, you may not have permission to change it.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, if available.
- Disconnect from a school or work VPN only if you are permitted to do so.
- Try a personal device or network.
- Ask the account owner or administrator to review the policy if Restricted Mode is enforced.
If comments work on mobile data but not on the usual Wi-Fi, the network’s filtering is a stronger suspect than the app. Do not change household DNS or bypass an administrator’s controls without authorization. Workspace administrators can review YouTube settings for their organization.

Your account is supervised
Supervision affects viewing and writing differently from Restricted Mode. YouTube says supervised children using the “Most of YouTube” or “Explore more” content settings can read comments but cannot write them; comments are also unavailable on “Made for Kids” content. See YouTube’s supervised experience guidance. Reinstalling the app or clearing cache will not remove an account-level restriction.
Fix a browser that will not show comments
Use these checks in order, starting with reversible tests. A private window is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix: if comments work there, the usual browser profile is the likely place to investigate.
- Test a private or incognito window. Open a video with normally active comments. If they work, suspect an extension, cookie, cached site data, or profile setting.
- Try another browser. If comments load there, focus on the original browser rather than the YouTube video.
- Temporarily disable extensions and userscripts. Test ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, Tampermonkey scripts, YouTube layout customizers, downloaders, and VPN or security extensions one at a time, then reload. These tools can interfere with page components, but that does not mean any particular extension is always responsible. Recent user reports describe extension and userscript conflicts, but are not proof of a universal cause: community reports.
- Remove YouTube’s site data if the problem appears local. Delete site data for
youtube.com. If the sign-in session seems involved, you can also remove data foraccounts.google.com. You will need to sign in again, and site preferences may be reset. - Update the browser. Use its official update mechanism; labels and menus vary by browser version.
Clearing browser site data is different from merely clearing a cache and is not a first step for a video-level restriction. A YouTube Help Community thread describes persistent loading and suggests comparing signed-out, alternate-browser, extension, and site-data tests; treat it as a troubleshooting report, not confirmation of a general YouTube fault: community thread.
Fix the YouTube app on a phone or tablet
- Force-close YouTube, reopen it, and check another video.
- Update YouTube through the official app store, then restart the device.
- If appropriate, sign out and back in to refresh the session.
- On Android, try Settings → Apps → YouTube → Storage & cache → Clear cache. Labels vary by Android version and device maker. Do not choose Clear storage or Clear data unless you intend to reset local app data.
- On iPhone or iPad, force-close, update, and restart first. iOS does not provide a universal per-app cache-clearing control; if the problem persists, delete and reinstall YouTube.
- Test YouTube in a mobile browser or on another network to distinguish an app issue from account or network restrictions.
If you use YouTube on a smart TV or game console, restart the app and device, check for app or system updates, and sign out and back in. Test the same video on a phone or computer rather than applying phone-specific cache steps to a television.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If comments are visible but posting or interacting fails
First check whether you can read comments but cannot write, reply, or like. A supervised account may be able to read but not write. On an individual video, the creator may also have disabled or paused comments, or YouTube may restrict the feature.
If a comment appears to post and then disappears, it may have been held for review, removed as spam or a policy violation, matched against blocked words or links, or affected by the creator hiding your account. YouTube says comments containing blocked words or links can be held for review for up to 60 days, and comments from hidden users do not appear on the channel. Check the creator’s moderation settings guidance: manage comments and moderation.

A comment missing from Top comments is not necessarily gone: check Newest as well. A removed comment is different from one that is sorted lower or held for review, and not every removed comment can be recovered.
For creators: check the video and held comments in Studio
Review the video’s audience and comment settings
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Open the affected video and check its Audience setting.
- If the video is incorrectly designated “Made for Kids,” review the available Appeal option where offered; do not change the designation simply to enable comments.
- For a video that can have comments, open Show more, find Comments and ratings, choose the intended setting, and select Save.
For a Short, the control may appear beside or below the Short in the mobile interface; YouTube’s comment settings instructions distinguish the mobile steps for videos and Shorts.
Check moderation and channel defaults
Open Comments in Studio and review Held for comments filtered by moderation, blocked words, or links. Check whether a user has been hidden or whether moderation is set to Basic, Strict, or Hold all. YouTube says default comment settings apply to new uploads; changing a default does not necessarily change existing videos, which may need individual settings reviewed. The same creator settings guidance explains video-level controls.
When to suspect a wider YouTube problem
A YouTube-side issue becomes more plausible if comments fail across multiple devices and browsers, while signed out, and on more than one network. That pattern does not prove an outage. Check YouTube’s official troubleshooting entry point and Help Community, and consult a reputable outage-monitoring service before concluding the service is down.

If you report the problem, include the affected video URL, device and operating system, YouTube app or browser version, the exact message or loading behavior, and what happened when you tested another account, browser, and network. Screenshots can help distinguish an intentional restriction from a blank or stuck interface.
Quick Recap
What not to try
- Do not install unofficial YouTube clients, proxy sites, or unknown “comment fixer” downloads.
- Do not change random browser flags or permanently disable browser security features.
- Do not bypass school, workplace, parental, or household filtering without permission.
- Do not mislabel a video’s audience to restore comments.
