Fixing packet loss starts with finding where the stream is failing. Check whether the problem is in your encoder, local network, internet route, or streaming platform; then test Ethernet, reduce competing traffic, and make sure your bitrate is sustainable. A lower bitrate can help transmission, but it costs image quality and will not repair loss farther upstream.
First identify who is affected
Packet loss can show up as stuttering, freezing, dropped frames, buffering, or a disconnected stream. Those symptoms do not identify the fault by themselves.
- Broadcaster-side dropped frames: OBS says this can mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or the configured bitrate exceeds what the connection can sustain. It points to the network path or available capacity, but does not locate the fault. See OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting (September 30, 2024).
- Rendering or encoding lag: These are different OBS problems from frames dropped for network connection stalls. Check OBS Statistics and logs to identify which counter is rising before changing network settings.
- Only one or a few viewers buffer: Amazon IVS guidance says a limited number of affected viewers often indicates a local playback device or network issue.
- Many or all viewers buffer at once: Investigate the broadcaster’s feed and service path. IVS recommends using its stream-health metrics to help locate broadcast-side instability. This distinction is IVS guidance, not a universal diagnosis for every platform. See AWS IVS troubleshooting guidance.
Keep the scope of the symptom in view: a viewer’s buffering does not necessarily mean the broadcaster is losing packets, and a broadcaster’s dropped frames do not prove that every viewer sees the same interruption.
Test the local network before changing stream settings
- Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet for a comparable broadcast. OBS and Cloudflare both suggest testing a wired connection. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one option for connecting the computer to the router. If the problem stops on Ethernet, the wireless link may be involved; the test does not rule out an ISP or upstream route issue.
- Pause other traffic. Stop large uploads and downloads on the local network and see whether the stream stabilizes. This helps test whether competing traffic is consuming capacity.
- Temporarily test without a VPN, if policy permits. OBS notes that VPN software can make the path unstable. Treat disabling it as a diagnostic test, not a default permanent change.
- Check security software and network utilities. Security products or bundled networking tools can interfere with streaming traffic. If a test identifies a conflict, restore protection and configure an appropriate exception rather than leaving protection disabled.
A cable can improve the local connection test; it cannot fix congestion or packet loss between your ISP and the streaming service.

Set a bitrate the upload path can sustain
A speed test’s peak upload result does not prove that the same rate can be sustained throughout a live stream. Compare the encoder bitrate with actual stream-health or ingest metrics during the failure, and lower the rate in a controlled test if capacity is insufficient. Lower bitrate may reduce dropped frames, but also reduces picture quality.
Cloudflare’s troubleshooting guide for Cloudflare Stream (updated July 30, 2026) says to check upload speed and use a constant bitrate if the stream is variable. In its stated troubleshooting context, it says upload speed should be at least 20 Mbps and advises lowering a bitrate above 15 Mbps to 8 Mbps or 70% of internet speed, whichever is lower. These are Cloudflare Stream recommendations, not universal requirements or guarantees for other services. See Cloudflare’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.

OBS also offers Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). OBS describes it as a way to lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up; it does not fix the underlying connection and can reduce video quality. Consider it mitigation, not a substitute for locating the fault.
Use the streaming platform’s own metrics
Cloudflare Stream: upload duration and keyframes
Cloudflare Stream’s troubleshooting page recommends checking its upload-to-duration and keyframe charts. Its recommendations are a consistent, flat keyframe interval between 2 and 8 seconds, with an upload-to-duration ratio below 90%. It suggests starting with a 4-second keyframe interval and adjusting for stability and latency. These are service-specific operational recommendations, not universal packet-loss limits.

Cloudflare’s setup guidance says creator bitrates are typically well under 12 Mbps and describes GOP durations of 2–8 seconds. Shorter GOPs can lower latency but are less encoding-efficient; longer GOPs improve efficiency and can increase latency. Cloudflare’s troubleshooting guidance notes that a longer interval can reduce buffering or freezing in its context. A keyframe or GOP change is a configuration check when metrics point to it; it is not a cure for packet loss. See Cloudflare’s live-stream setup guidance.
AWS MediaLive: recovered and unrecovered packets
For AWS MediaLive Link devices, review recovered packets, not-recovered packets, and error seconds. Recovered packets were dropped in transit but repaired. A positive not-recovered count indicates unrepaired loss; error seconds show the time affected. Persistent recovered drops may warn of future trouble even if quality has not yet visibly degraded. Definitions are in AWS MediaLive input device metrics.

AWS Elemental MediaConnect: SRT or Zixi contribution
For SRT or Zixi contribution workflows through AWS Elemental MediaConnect, AWS advises checking whether the configured minimum and maximum latency suit the measured round-trip time when packets are not recovered. If latency is appropriate, inspect encoder “behind real-time” alerts and output connection errors. See AWS’s SRT and Zixi troubleshooting guidance.
Metric names and thresholds are platform-specific. Do not apply a Cloudflare chart recommendation or an AWS counter interpretation to a different ingest service as though it were a universal rule.

Escalate with useful evidence
If the stream remains unstable after testing Ethernet and a conservative bitrate, collect evidence before contacting support:
- Exact times when dropped frames, buffering, or disconnects occurred, including the time zone.
- The encoder log and the relevant OBS Statistics counters.
- The ingest endpoint or server selected by the streaming platform.
- Platform stream-health or packet metrics from the same time window.
- Whether the problem affected the broadcaster, one or a few viewers, or many viewers at once.
- What changed during your tests: wired versus Wi-Fi, competing traffic paused, VPN test, or bitrate adjustment.
Ask your ISP to investigate the upload service or route if local checks do not resolve the issue. Contact the streaming provider when its ingest metrics point to a service-side problem. AWS IVS notes that conditions between the broadcaster and service—including the ISP or public internet path—can cause instability.
Choose a remedy based on where the fault is
| Finding | Useful next step | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi is unstable, Ethernet test improves the stream | Use a wired LAN connection and investigate the wireless link. | Does not address ISP or upstream route loss. |
| Competing uploads correlate with drops | Pause or schedule large transfers while streaming. | Helps only if local traffic is contributing to congestion. |
| Configured bitrate exceeds sustained capacity | Lower bitrate or test OBS’s dynamic bitrate option. | Lower bitrate reduces image quality; dynamic bitrate does not repair the connection. |
| Platform metrics show an ingest or contribution issue | Use that platform’s documented metrics and contact its support with timestamps. | Metrics and operational recommendations vary by service. |
| Only a small group of viewers is affected | Have those viewers test their own network and playback device. | One viewer’s buffer does not establish broadcaster-side packet loss. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your project is a pre-recorded YouTube stream that should run 24/7, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery attempts to restart if YouTube drops the stream. This is a different setup from fixing packet loss in a live camera or encoder feed.
