First find out whether the audio is missing only from OBS monitoring or also from the stream or recording. OBS issue reports describe playlist transitions where local monitoring was silent or clipped even though the reporter’s recording or stream output was unaffected. If only monitoring fails, check the monitor device and routing; if the output is also silent, inspect the VLC source’s audio-track selection and the active OBS tracks.
1. Separate a monitoring problem from missing stream audio
Listen to a recording or stream output independently of your OBS headphones or speakers. A moving audio meter does not establish that sound is reaching the selected monitoring device.
- Recording or stream has audio, but you cannot hear it locally: focus first on OBS monitoring and the operating system’s output-device routing.
- Recording or stream is also silent: check the VLC source’s audio-track selection, the mixer, and which OBS tracks are active for output.
- It fails only as one playlist item changes to another: record whether the transition is natural or manually advanced. Older OBS reports describe transition-related monitoring failures, but do not prove that every current installation has the same defect.
These are diagnostic clues, not guarantees: confirm the output yourself before changing settings.
2. Check the VLC source and OBS audio tracks
- Play the affected playlist item and watch the VLC source’s level in the OBS audio mixer. Note whether the meter moves during the silent interval and at the transition.
- Inspect the VLC source’s audio-track selection. Confirm it is set to the track you expect for the affected media. If the playlist mixes audio-only and video files, compare the source behavior on each type.
- Open Advanced Audio Properties from the audio mixer and check that the relevant track is active for the recording or stream output you are testing.
- Test the recording or stream separately. Do not treat meter movement or local monitoring alone as proof that the live or recorded output has the same problem.
A community troubleshooting thread recommends checking these settings, but it does not establish one configuration as a confirmed fix.

3. Verify the monitoring destination
- In OBS, open Settings > Audio and check the monitoring device. Select the device you actually intend to hear through.
- Check the operating system’s selected output device and confirm it is not muted. Play audio from another app through that same device to verify it works.
- If the device or routing changed, retest the VLC source and a recording before concluding the playlist itself is at fault.
These routing checks are community troubleshooting suggestions, not a guaranteed cure for a transition-specific issue.
4. Try a monitoring reset as a quick test
One forum user reported restoring monitoring by changing the VLC source’s audio monitoring mode from Monitor and Output to Monitor Off, then back. Treat this as an anecdotal workaround: the same discussion includes a report of the problem persisting after suggested steps, and the original poster did not know which setting had fixed their case.

5. Check VLC installation only if the source is unavailable
The OBS reference manual says VLC must be installed for the VLC Video Source to appear, and VLC’s 32-bit or 64-bit architecture should match OBS. This is a prerequisite for using that source, not an established remedy for audio disappearing only between playlist items. The manual also describes playlist items playing in the order added.
6. What older reports do—and do not—show
- Mixed audio-only and video playlist items: OBS issue #3410 was opened on September 4, 2020, for Windows 10 and OBS 25.0.8 / 26.0.0-rc1. The reporter described monitoring failing on an audio-only item while the video frame persisted. The issue is closed as not planned; it does not prove that all playlist audio loss has this cause. - Audio cut off near the end of an item: OBS issue #3712 was filed on November 9, 2020, for Windows 10 and OBS 26.0.2. It was marked confirmed by a project member and described audio cutting one or two seconds before an item ended during monitoring, not streaming or recording. It is closed as not planned; that status does not establish that a fix shipped. Read the OBS issue report.
- Silent stream output despite local sound: an open report filed October 30, 2025 describes a different symptom on Windows 11 with OBS 32.0.2: local sound was audible but did not reach the live stream despite meter activity. The author said rolling back to 31.0.4 resolved their case. This is one user’s report, not evidence that other users should roll back. Read the OBS issue report.
The reports vary by OBS version, operating system, playlist contents, transition type, meter activity, and whether only monitoring or the actual output was affected. Use those differences to describe your own reproduction rather than assuming a single cause.

7. Record a useful reproduction before seeking help
- OBS version and operating system.
- Whether the playlist contains audio-only files, video files, or both.
- Whether audio disappears at natural completion, when using “Next,” or in both cases.
- Whether the mixer meter moves during the problem.
- Whether a recording or live stream is affected, or only local monitoring.
- The monitoring mode and selected monitoring device when the issue occurs.
These details distinguish a local monitoring or routing problem from an output problem, and help compare your case with the older reports.
