If OBS shows black video from a local file, first check how you added it: use a Media Source or VLC Video source to play a file inside OBS. Use Window Capture only when you intentionally need to capture a separate player window. Then check the source setup, test Media Source with hardware decoding off, and compare playback through VLC Video. A black screen does not, by itself, prove the file is corrupt or unsupported.
First identify how OBS is supposed to show the video
OBS has different sources for playing a file and capturing another application. If your goal is to put a video in an OBS scene, add the file as a Media Source. VLC Video is another playback source, using VLC libraries. Window Capture instead captures a separate application window, such as a video player.
- Playing a file in the scene: Use Media Source, or try VLC Video if Media Source does not display it.
- Capturing a player’s window: Use Window Capture only if you need the separate player or its interface to appear in OBS. If you only need the video, add the file as a media source instead.
An OBS forum exchange about capturing VLC through Window Capture recommended using Media Source or VLC Source for playback. It concerned Windows 8.1, OBS 25.0.8, and VLC 3.0.11, so it illustrates the distinction between playback and capture rather than proving a universal fix: OBS forum discussion.
Check the media source and its file
- Open the scene that should show the video. In the Sources list, confirm the intended source is visible and not hidden behind another source.
- Open the source properties. Confirm it points to the local file you meant to play. If you intended to play a file but see a capture source for a player window, replace or supplement it with a Media Source.
- Check the file extension. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM for Media Source. This extension list is not a complete compatibility table for codecs or profiles; a familiar extension alone does not establish that OBS can decode the file. See the OBS Project Media Sources documentation.
- Check whether a normal standalone player can display the file. This helps establish whether the symptom is limited to OBS, but a successful standalone playback does not identify which decoder path in OBS is failing.
Test Media Source with hardware decoding off
Media Source has a Use hardware decoding when available option. It asks the GPU to decode certain file types when a suitable hardware decoder is available; OBS documents the option as off by default. If it is enabled and the video is black, turn it off and retest:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In the OBS Sources list, select the Media Source and open its properties.
- Turn off Use hardware decoding when available, if enabled.
- Apply the change, then check whether the video appears in the preview.
This is a reversible diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix. A historical OBS issue described a black screen with hardware decoding enabled for a WebM Media Source on macOS 13 and OBS 28.1.2; that report supports testing the setting, not assuming it is the cause on other systems: OBS Studio issue 7804.
Compare playback with VLC Video
If Media Source still shows black, try VLC Video with the same file. The OBS Project describes VLC Video as a separate source that uses VLC libraries for extended media support. VLC must be installed for the source to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Refer to the OBS Project Media Sources documentation for the source details.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. Match its architecture to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source to the scene and select the same file.
- Compare its display with Media Source.
If VLC Video shows the image while Media Source does not, you have narrowed the problem to a difference in playback or decoder path. That comparison does not reveal the file’s codec or guarantee a permanent fix, and VLC Video is not a promise of support for every file.
If the image is still black, collect details before changing more
There is no universal codec fix established for this symptom. Before guessing or installing codec packs, record enough information to distinguish a source-selection issue from a decoding or system-specific problem:

- Operating system and version, plus OBS version.
- Source type: Media Source, VLC Video, or Window Capture.
- File extension and, if known, video codec and profile.
- Whether the file plays in a standalone player and whether OBS plays audio while the image is black.
- Whether hardware decoding is enabled, and the GPU and driver details.
- An OBS log from a session in which you reproduce the issue.
These details matter because the result may depend on the operating system, OBS version, file encoding, GPU, and chosen source. A black preview alone does not establish that the file is corrupt, protected, or unsupported.
Do not confuse a black image with an overloaded stream
A static black file preview and choppy, laggy output are different symptoms. If the video is also stuttering or OBS reports overload, follow the OBS Project’s encoding performance troubleshooting guidance. It addresses performance issues such as GPU or encoding workload, not a proven cause or fix for a static black Media Source. OBS also recommends Media Source or VLC Source for video and audio files in that performance context.
