Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFirst identify which OBS counter is rising. If OBS reports network “Dropped frames” and its connection indicator turns yellow or red, the stream connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. If OBS instead reports rendering lag or “Encoding overloaded,” reduce the computer’s graphics workload and output demands; lowering network bitrate alone will not fix a GPU bottleneck.
1. Confirm what kind of frame loss OBS reports
Check OBS’s status bar and statistics while the problem is happening. A rising network dropped-frames count points to data failing to reach the streaming service reliably or the connection being unable to maintain the configured bitrate. OBS explains that it drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing (OBS Help Portal).
Rendering lag and an “Encoding overloaded” message indicate a different branch: OBS needs enough GPU resources to composite and render scenes. Viewer buffering is different again; viewers can have playback trouble even when OBS is not dropping frames. Use OBS’s separate stream buffering troubleshooting guide if OBS counters are normal but viewers report buffering.
2. Fix network dropped frames
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and remote stream ingest server. Work through these steps in order, checking whether the counter still rises after each change.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Try another ingest server. In OBS, open Settings → Stream and select another available server. If you stream to Twitch on Windows, OBS suggests using TwitchTest to identify servers with better quality results.
- Lower the video bitrate. Open Settings → Output and reduce Video Bitrate. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee: actual stability depends on the route to the destination, available upload capacity, and the service’s own bitrate limits. Leave headroom rather than setting bitrate at the edge of a speed-test result.
- Test another service to isolate the route. OBS suggests a temporary test stream to a different service, such as testing YouTube instead of Twitch. If the alternate service works, the problem may be specific to the original service or route; if it also fails, investigate the broader connection.
- Use wired networking as a test. OBS notes that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. If practical, connect the streaming computer to the router with Ethernet and see whether the drops stop. This removes Wi-Fi as a variable; it cannot correct an ISP or ingest-route problem by itself.
- Check VPNs, security software, and network utilities. Temporarily test without a VPN or security software. If the test resolves the issue, configure an appropriate exception and re-enable protection rather than leaving security disabled. OBS also identifies network “optimization” utilities, including Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and the Killer NIC suite, as possible sources of interference.
- Review network settings and hardware. In Settings → Advanced → Network, leave Bind to IP at Default. OBS documents testing IPv4 only; if it makes no difference, restore IPv4/IPv6. On Windows, OBS also suggests trying Network Optimizations and TCP pacing. Restart the modem and router, update the network driver from its manufacturer, and check cables, router, modem, network card, switch, or extender if the problem persists.
- Contact your ISP if local troubleshooting fails. Congestion or routing beyond your home equipment may be outside your control. OBS recommends contacting the ISP after its troubleshooting steps have not resolved the problem.
Optional: dynamic bitrate
OBS offers “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta)” as a way to lower bitrate during congestion instead of dropping frames. It may preserve stream continuity at the cost of image quality, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying connection problem.
3. Fix rendering lag or encoding overload
If the network dropped-frames counter is not the problem and OBS reports rendering or encoding strain, reduce the work OBS and the computer must do. The OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide, dated June 12, 2021, explains that OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator when GPU overload is the issue.
- Close other programs that are using substantial GPU resources.
- Reduce the output resolution or frame rate. OBS recommends trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
- Simplify scenes and reduce expensive sources, filters, and browser sources.
These changes trade visual detail, motion smoothness, or scene effects for lower system load. They target rendering or encoding strain, not an unstable network route.
4. What changes for a 24/7 nature sounds stream?
A low-motion image does not change the network diagnosis: OBS still has to deliver data to the ingest server reliably at the configured bitrate. For a stream that is meant to stay live for long periods, the cited OBS guidance supports using a wired connection, choosing a bitrate with headroom, checking the ingest route, and investigating network devices and software. It does not publish a special 24/7 or nature-stream preset, a recommended uptime target, or a guarantee that a computer, router, or service will remain online indefinitely.

Check the streaming platform’s current requirements before settling on resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Also make sure you have the rights needed for the nature audio and any video or other material you broadcast; a technically stable stream does not resolve copyright or platform-policy issues.
