Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →First check which OBS counter is rising. A growing Dropped Frames (Network) count points to the connection between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server, or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. An “Encoding overloaded” warning points instead to rendering or encoder capacity. If OBS reports no dropped frames but viewers say the stream buffers, investigate playback and platform conditions separately.
Work through the relevant branch below, changing one thing at a time and watching the counter. These steps can help diagnose network and performance problems, but no OBS setting guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 stream.
1. Identify what is actually failing
Network dropped frames
OBS uses network dropped frames when it cannot reliably deliver frames to the streaming service at the configured bitrate. OBS sends the stream directly from your computer to the service; there are no OBS streaming servers in between. The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” The counter does not by itself prove an OBS software defect.
Encoding overload
If OBS reports “Encoding overloaded,” or the output is choppy without a rising network-drops counter, treat it as a rendering or encoding performance issue. Changing the ingest server is unlikely to resolve a machine that cannot render or encode the scene fast enough. Follow the performance steps in section 5 and the OBS Project’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide.

Viewer buffering with no OBS drops
If your OBS connection indicator and dropped-frames count look healthy but viewers report buffering, the issue may be their bandwidth or device, the stream’s bitrate, or platform transcoding. OBS explains that dropping frames can avoid buffering and keep a stream playing; see the OBS Help Portal. Use section 6 rather than assuming the local connection is at fault.
2. Test the connection to the streaming service
- Watch the OBS statistics while streaming. Confirm that the dropped-frames count is increasing, rather than relying only on a viewer’s report that the picture looks choppy. Make one change at a time so you can see whether the count improves.
- Try another ingest server. In OBS, open Settings → Stream and select another server if the service offers a choice. A different server or route can help identify whether the problem is specific to the current ingest path. You can also test another streaming service as diagnosis; that test does not establish that switching services is a dependable fix.
- For Twitch on Windows, compare server quality with TwitchTest. This is the Twitch-specific test mentioned in the OBS guide, not a general YouTube ingest test.
- Ask your ISP about persistent route or congestion problems. Problems outside your computer or home network, including congestion or routing changes, can affect the connection. If local checks do not help, contact your ISP before replacing network hardware.
3. Set a bitrate your upload can sustain
A bitrate must fit both the streaming service’s limits and your connection’s stable upload capacity. The OBS Project’s connection guide, dated 2024-09-30, suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. It is guidance, not a guarantee or a universal bitrate prescription: an unstable connection or a service limit can require a lower setting.

- Check your actual upload capacity and whether it remains stable, rather than choosing a bitrate based on download speed.
- Lower the stream bitrate in OBS, then monitor the dropped-frames counter over time. If the count stops climbing, the previous bitrate may have exceeded what the connection could reliably deliver.
- Keep the service’s bitrate limits in mind. Do not treat the 75% starting point as permission to exceed them.
Lowering bitrate can reduce image quality. If a meditation stream uses a visually simple scene, avoid assuming that a high bitrate is harmless: every setting still has to fit the available upload capacity.
4. Check network configuration and the physical path
Try OBS network settings on Windows
- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network. Enable Network Optimizations and TCP pacing if those options are available.
- Check that Bind to IP is set to Default.
- As a diagnostic only, try IPv4 Only. If it makes no difference, restore the broader IPv4 and IPv6 setting rather than leaving the test configuration in place without a reason.
Look for software or driver interference
VPNs, security software, bundled network “optimization” tools, and outdated network drivers are among the possible causes listed by OBS. Test carefully and change only one variable at a time. Do not leave security software disabled: if it proves responsible, add an OBS exception and re-enable it. OBS also cautions that network software intended to optimize or tweak connections may deprioritize OBS.

Prefer wired Ethernet and inspect equipment before replacing it
OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. If you already use Ethernet, check the cable and the path through your network card, router, switch, extender, or other network device. Restart the modem and router as a basic check. Replace a cable or device only when a fault is plausible; a new cable cannot fix ISP congestion, an ingest-server route problem, an excessive bitrate, or encoder overload.
5. If the problem is encoding overload
The OBS Project’s encoding guide, dated 2021-06-12, treats this as a performance problem rather than a network-drops problem. Reduce the work OBS has to do, then check whether the warning or choppy output improves.

- Close applications that heavily use the GPU.
- Simplify OBS scenes and remove or reduce costly filters and browser sources where practical.
- If necessary, lower output resolution or frame rate to reduce rendering and encoding workload.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator; OBS says this may help with GPU overload.
Changing resolution or frame rate affects the stream’s output. Make only the reduction needed to address the performance limit, and verify the result in OBS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. If only viewers report buffering
The OBS Project’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide, dated 2021-06-09, separates viewer buffering from OBS dropping frames. Check whether viewers have adequate bandwidth and compatible devices, and consider the stream bitrate and platform transcoding. Lowering bitrate or output quality may help some viewers, but it also reduces stream quality. If OBS’s dropped-frames counter remains clear, do not mistake viewer-side buffering for proof of a local network failure.

7. Use Dynamic Bitrate only as a fallback
OBS’s beta Dynamic Bitrate option can reduce bitrate automatically when the connection cannot keep up. That trade-off may reduce network drops, but picture quality can fall, and the feature does not fix the underlying connection problem. The OBS Project presents it as a fallback, not a root-cause remedy. If you enable it, continue investigating the network issue rather than treating the changing bitrate as a permanent repair.
8. Keep a 24/7 stream under observation
The OBS troubleshooting guides do not specify a separate fix or a guaranteed configuration for 24/7 streaming. After a change, watch the relevant counter over time: a short period without new drops does not prove the connection will remain stable indefinitely. Keep the diagnosis tied to the symptom—network delivery, encoding/rendering, or viewer playback—and avoid treating any single setting as a guarantee of continuous operation.
