How to Fix Missing Audio in an FFmpeg YouTube Livestream

Find where audio disappears in an FFmpeg YouTube livestream: the input, output mapping, YouTube ingestion, or playback—and fix the right part.

If an FFmpeg YouTube livestream has video but no sound, check the input, FFmpeg’s output stream selection, then YouTube’s ingestion status—in that order. First confirm FFmpeg sees an audio stream. If it does, make sure the output maps and encodes the intended audio, and that no output option such as -an disables it. Then check YouTube’s Live Control Room for audio errors.

1. Check whether FFmpeg receives audio

Run your usual FFmpeg command and inspect the log. After each Input #... line, look for a stream description containing Audio:. If the input has no audio stream, changing output mapping or YouTube settings cannot create one.

  • If there is no Audio: line, check that the command opens the intended input, and investigate the selected capture device, source application’s audio routing, or other source path.
  • If an audio stream is listed, note which input and stream contain the sound you want. You will need to map that stream if using manual stream selection.

FFmpeg documents -map for manual stream selection and -an as an output option that disables audio recording, including automatic audio selection. See the FFmpeg documentation.

2. Check what FFmpeg sends to YouTube

Compare the input listing with the output stream listing in the log. If the input has audio but the output does not, inspect the full command for an output-scoped -an, missing or incorrect -map options, a wrong input index, or filtergraph outputs that do not include the audio you expect. FFmpeg options apply to outputs according to their position and command structure, so check the whole command rather than just one fragment.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Map the intended audio stream

If the first audio stream of the first input is the one you want, the mapping is -map 0:a:0. In a command with multiple inputs, replace the leading input number with the index containing the intended audio. Adapt the mapping if filters change the streams available to the output.

This illustrative RTMP/RTMPS command shows explicit video and audio mapping and AAC audio encoding. It is a pattern, not a tested command; replace the input, video settings, server URL, and stream key with your actual values. Keep your stream key private, and make sure no later output-scoped -an disables audio.

ffmpeg -i INPUT -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -ar 44100 -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://SERVER/STREAM_KEY"

For a configured multi-input or filtered command, do not copy the example blindly: map the audio stream that actually carries your sound.

3. Match the audio settings YouTube expects

For RTMP/RTMPS live ingestion, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its encoder guidance recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. For 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS video guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 and recommends CBR encoding, a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Use the Live Control Room’s actual health message to focus troubleshooting. YouTube’s live streaming error messages include checks for an unsupported audio codec, no audio stream, multiple audio streams, incorrect sample rate or bitrate, and too many audio channels. The error guidance for that channel-count issue specifies mono or stereo—one or two channels. Do not change unrelated video settings when the reported error points to audio.

4. Test the stream end to end

  1. Before a public event, run a private or unlisted test that includes real audio and movement similar to the planned stream.
  2. Listen to the Live Control Room preview and check its stream health messages.
  3. Verify playback on the live page as well, so you can distinguish an encoder-output issue from an ingestion, preview, or viewer-playback issue.

YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, monitoring stream health, and reviewing its messages. A successful local output alone does not confirm that audio is being ingested or heard on the live page.

No Audio: line in the input listing Check the selected input, capture device, and source application’s audio routing. FFmpeg cannot map an audio stream that is absent from its input.
Input lists audio, but output does not Inspect output-scoped -an, manual mappings, input indices, and filtergraph outputs. Explicitly map the intended audio stream.
Output lists audio, but YouTube reports an audio error Use the Live Control Room message to check the audio codec, number of audio streams, channel count, sample rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s guidance.
Audio is present but sounds silent Check source levels and routing, then listen to a local recording or monitor output if your workflow supports it. A listed audio stream does not establish that it contains audible sound.
Audio works locally but not on the live page Compare the Live Control Room preview and health messages with test-stream playback before changing an encoder that produces working local audio.
