If a 24/7 prerecorded church stream is silent, first find out whether the problem affects one viewer or the stream for everyone. Then trace the audio from the media file or mixer through the capture device and encoder to YouTube. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s health message and timestamp, and compare the encoder preview, a local test recording, and the live stream. Fix the first point in that chain where the sound disappears; do not replace equipment or change format settings without evidence.
First determine who is hearing silence
Ask whether the stream is silent for everyone, or only for one viewer. Have that viewer try another device or internet connection, and check the stream yourself. YouTube notes that a problem reported by one viewer may be on that viewer’s computer or connection. Several viewers sharing one connection may have a shared network issue; reports from viewers on different connections can point to the encoder. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking viewer reports alongside the stream.
- One viewer affected: ask them to try another device or connection before changing the church’s stream setup.
- Several viewers on the same network affected: check that network and its connection to YouTube.
- Viewers on separate networks affected: focus on the audio reaching the encoder and the stream it sends.
Check YouTube Live Control Room
Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the Health Indicator and any timestamped error messages. The health status describes the stream YouTube is receiving; unresolved errors may continue to appear. Note when the problem began so you can compare it with changes to the media, mixer, source routing, or encoder.
A no-audio error means the incoming stream has no audio stream. YouTube also identifies multiple audio streams, an unsupported audio codec, and more than two audio channels as possible format problems. Some encoders have a control or checkbox that enables audio. See YouTube’s troubleshooting steps and its stream-error guidance; follow the specific error shown for your stream rather than changing unrelated settings.

Trace the sound from the source to the encoder
Follow the route the audio actually takes. A stream may use the audio embedded in a prerecorded file, a live mixer feed, or a combination. The exact controls depend on the media player, operating system, capture hardware, and encoder; there is no single menu path that applies to every church setup.
Verify the media or mixer output
- Play the exact prerecorded file locally and confirm that it has an audible audio track.
- If a mixer supplies or overlays sound, check the relevant channel’s gain and mute state, then confirm the master output is active.
- If the source is a player or other device, check its volume and the physical cable or output feeding the next device.
OBS’s audio guidance recommends checking sound at its originating device and then listening again as it reaches OBS. OBS Project’s Audio Mixer Guide covers that approach.

Check the signal entering the encoder
Follow the cable and selected input through each device in the chain: media player or mixer, camera or capture device if used, operating-system input, and encoder source. In OBS, play the media or mixer feed and look for movement on the intended source’s meter in the Audio Mixer.
- No meter movement: check that the right source and input are selected, the source and device are not muted, physical levels are up, system or application volume is audible, and the relevant device permission is enabled.
- Meter movement, but no sound in the stream: continue to the output-track and preview checks. Meter activity proves only that a signal reaches that point, not that the correct audio is being sent to YouTube.
Operating-system and application volume controls can affect what OBS receives, as OBS explains in its Audio Mixer Guide. A church-stream forum discussion describes a case in which a video-capture source was not configured to receive audio from the capture device; treat it as one possible routing failure, not a diagnosis for every silent stream: OBS forum example.

Confirm the audio is included in the outgoing stream
If the encoder receives sound, check that the intended source is unmuted and included in the stream output. In OBS, inspect Advanced Audio Properties and confirm that the source is assigned to the audio track currently selected for streaming. Do not assume a track number based on someone else’s setup: encoder defaults and routing vary. A 2018 OBS forum reply describes Track 1 as the default for that user’s configuration, not a universal rule. The current output-track selection is what matters.
Compare the encoder, a local recording, and YouTube
- Listen to the encoder’s preview while the prerecorded media is playing.
- Make a short local recording with the same sources and settings, then play it back with sound.
- Check YouTube’s stream preview and Health Indicator at the same time.
- Compare the results to find the first point where audio vanishes or becomes incorrect.
YouTube recommends checking the stream in the encoder and inspecting a local archive. If the encoder output is already silent or poor, inspect its routed sources, errors, and CPU load. If the encoder sounds correct but the outgoing stream does not, investigate the outbound connection; if it shows problems, contact the internet provider. If source and local-recording checks do not explain bad output, YouTube suggests trying another encoder. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guide. Change audio format only when the error points to it
Use the Health Indicator’s specific error and your encoder’s current settings to decide whether a format change is needed. YouTube’s error guidance describes H.264 video and AAC audio as the expected format, lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs in the error details, requires one audio stream, and supports mono or stereo—not more than two channels. Its error messages recommend 128 Kbps audio and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation lists 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz as recommended sample rates. Consult YouTube Help’s live-stream error guidance and the YouTube Live Streaming API encoding settings.
These figures address format checks, not a reason to alter a working stream at random. First establish whether the problem is source silence, routing, track assignment, encoder output, or delivery. Then make only the correction indicated by the error or the point where the signal disappears.

Common symptoms and what to check next
