For an ingest problem, check FFmpeg and YouTube’s stream-health messages, then compare the stream’s total bitrate with measured upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom; a download-speed result alone cannot establish that your line can sustain a live stream.
Identify which kind of buffering you have
Incoming-stream or encoder problem
Open YouTube Live Control Room and check stream health alongside FFmpeg’s output and preview. If YouTube reports an incoming-stream problem, or FFmpeg shows errors, investigate the source, encoder settings, machine load, and outbound connection before changing providers. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says that if the stream looks and sounds healthy in the encoder, the outbound internet connection may be at fault; test it and contact the ISP if the test finds a problem. Viewer playback buffering
If the encoder and incoming feed look healthy but viewers report buffering, check playback conditions and the stream’s latency setting as well. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering because the player has less time to build a buffer. That symptom alone does not prove Airtel’s connection to YouTube ingest is failing. YouTube: Manage live stream latency.
Use this diagnostic sequence
- Compare the two views. Note YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status and errors, and inspect FFmpeg’s output and preview. A keyframe warning is a reason to check encoder cadence; a healthy encoder paired with poor outbound test results shifts attention to the connection.
- Rule out the input and machine. Check that the source audio and video are stable, look for FFmpeg encoding errors, and review CPU load. YouTube also recommends checking a local archive when stream quality is poor; this can help distinguish source or encoding trouble from delivery trouble. YouTube troubleshooting guidance.
- Measure upload speed on the affected network. Test outbound speed, not just download speed. If the issue comes and goes, repeat the test during the affected period. Compare sustained upload capacity with the full stream bitrate and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% reserve. Repeat testing at the relevant time is a diagnostic step, not an Airtel-specific published measurement.
- Reduce stream load for a controlled test. Lower resolution, frame rate, or video bitrate until the total bitrate has headroom on the measured connection. Test with representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live. YouTube troubleshooting guidance.
- Escalate with evidence. If FFmpeg remains healthy but outbound tests show a connection problem, contact Airtel with the incident times, test results, and relevant Live Control Room and FFmpeg errors. The available official guidance supports contacting the ISP when connection tests find problems; it does not establish an Airtel-wide fault or a particular Airtel plan’s upload speed.
Match FFmpeg output settings to the connection
YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265, or AV1; constant bitrate (CBR); up to 60 fps; and a two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 video-bitrate recommendations include the following values. They are ingest recommendations, not evidence that an Airtel line at your location can sustain them. These figures are YouTube’s recommended ingest video bitrates, checked October 3, 2026—not measurements of Airtel upload performance. A recommendation such as 10 Mbps for video does not include a claim that your line has sufficient capacity for the complete stream plus headroom.
Check keyframe cadence and option placement
YouTube specifically identifies keyframes that are not sent often enough as a possible cause of buffering. Check the actual FFmpeg output cadence against the two-second recommendation, and read any matching Live Control Room warning rather than assuming the command’s intended setting took effect. FFmpeg command-line options apply to the next input or output file and reset between files. When reviewing a command, verify that each codec, bitrate-control, keyframe, and output-format option appears before the output URL it configures. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation includes an RTMP publishing example using -re, -f flv, and an RTMP URL; adapt the example to your source, YouTube ingest URL and key, and installed FFmpeg build. Choose the ingest protocol for the workflow
YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. Its protocol documentation also describes RTMP options such as buffer duration and TCP keepalive, which may be useful to inspect when diagnosing connection behavior. Changing a keepalive or buffer option is not established as a fix for insufficient upload capacity, packet loss, or provider congestion. YouTube encoder settings · FFmpeg protocol documentation.

HLS is another YouTube ingest option when the encoder supports it or the workflow needs capabilities such as certain HDR or codec combinations. YouTube says HLS uses HTTPS, TS segments, and a rolling playlist; because it sends video in segments, it has higher latency than RTMP. Switching to HLS is a compatibility or workflow choice, not a general cure for buffering. YouTube: Live encoder settings for HLS.
What to record before contacting Airtel
- The times buffering occurred and whether it affected viewer playback or appeared as an incoming-stream warning.
- Relevant FFmpeg error lines and YouTube Live Control Room messages.
- Source details, CPU load, resolution, frame rate, video and audio bitrates, and keyframe interval.
- Whether you used RTMPS and the outbound speed-test results, including when you ran the tests.
Treat the YouTube stream key as a credential: do not share it in logs or support requests. If it is compromised, YouTube documents resetting the stream key. YouTube live-stream troubleshooting.
