First check which OBS counter is rising. If Dropped Frames (Network) is increasing while the local preview looks smooth, troubleshoot upload capacity and connection stability. If the preview itself is choppy or OBS reports rendering or encoding lag, investigate the file, scene, CPU, or GPU instead. Those are different problems and need different fixes.
Identify whether the problem is network delivery or local performance
In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the counters while playing the same prerecorded video and scene you intend to stream. OBS defines dropped frames as frames lost because the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. That points first to network delivery—not a general OBS failure. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide.
- Network dropped frames rise, local preview is smooth: investigate upload bandwidth, bitrate, Wi-Fi or other connection instability, and software or equipment interfering with the connection.
- The preview is choppy before transmission, or rendering/encoding indicators show trouble: investigate the media source, scene complexity, encoder errors, and CPU/GPU load. YouTube recommends checking whether audio and video already look poor in the encoder before treating the issue as a network problem. See YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guidance and the OBS encoding-performance guide.
Do not diagnose every stutter as a network drop. A viewer may see choppy video because the file or encoder is struggling even while the outbound connection is healthy.
Fix network-related dropped frames
Check stable upload capacity and leave headroom
Measure upload performance, not just download speed. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% of upload capacity unused. Shared use by other devices and fluctuations in the connection reduce what is reliably available to OBS. YouTube’s guidance is at Streaming tips.

OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a good starting point for bitrate. That is a practical estimate from OBS, while YouTube’s guidance is to leave 20% headroom; neither is a guarantee of a stable stream. If upload varies or the connection is shared, use a lower bitrate than a brief speed test might appear to allow. The OBS estimate and connection checks are in its connection guide.
Lower OBS’s streaming bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the current setting. Then test again while other household or workplace network use is representative of broadcast conditions. A lower bitrate can reduce image detail, so choose the best setting your stable upload capacity can sustain rather than targeting a number based only on download speed.

Match the encoder settings to YouTube’s current guidance
There is no single correct bitrate for every stream: YouTube’s table varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, its published table lists H.264 at 1080p60 with 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended, and H.264 at 1080p30 with 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular internet connection can carry them. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for your exact codec and output.
- Use CBR for the encoder rate-control setting.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported protocols and recommends RTMPS. Its settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with streaming up to 60 fps.
These are configuration checks, not substitutes for adequate upload headroom. If OBS continues to lose network frames, first lower bitrate to match the connection or stabilize that connection.

Stabilize the connection before replacing hardware
Try the following in order, testing after each meaningful change:
- Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi, if possible. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable. Check your existing cable and ports before buying anything.
- Temporarily disable a VPN for a controlled test. Also check whether security software or bundled network-prioritization utilities are interfering with OBS. Restore protections after the test and change only settings you understand.
- Check the network path. Restart the modem/router, inspect cables and connections, and check for outdated network drivers or a faulty network device.
- Ask whether someone else is using the connection. Pause large uploads or downloads during a test and account for regular shared use when choosing bitrate.
- Contact your ISP if local checks do not resolve recurring instability. OBS recommends escalating persistent connection issues after troubleshooting locally.
If you cannot fix congestion before a scheduled stream, OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower bitrate during network congestion and may reduce visible drops. OBS cautions that this does not fix the root cause and can reduce picture quality, so treat it as a fallback rather than the primary remedy. Details are in the OBS connection guide.

Fix choppy playback that starts inside OBS
Test the actual file and scene
Load the exact prerecorded file in the OBS Media Source or VLC Source you plan to use, then watch the preview while it plays. Check whether the source itself stutters, whether audio and video stay aligned, and whether OBS reports encoder errors or high CPU load. YouTube recommends checking source quality, encoder errors, and CPU load when the stream looks or sounds poor in the encoder.
Reduce unnecessary scene and source load
OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes. Close other GPU-intensive applications and simplify the scene if rendering performance is strained. If the final stream is 1080p, a 4K source may use resources without adding useful detail to the output; use a source resolution suited to the actual stream. See OBS’s encoding-performance troubleshooting.

Do not convert a file or change its codec on spec. The right remedy depends on whether the source, scene, CPU, or GPU is actually responsible; use OBS’s counters and the preview to isolate the cause first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the fix before the scheduled broadcast
- Run a test with motion and audio similar to the program. A static test image may not expose the same source or encoding load as the documentary you plan to play.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and YouTube’s stream-health messages while testing. YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them 15 minutes before the scheduled time; see its streaming tips.
- For a scheduled or high-stakes broadcast, use a private or unlisted test stream, then watch playback from the viewer side. A healthy encoder preview alone does not confirm that the viewer experience is good.
- Monitor audio and video during the event. If network drops return, compare the OBS network counter with bitrate and connection use; if the preview falters, return to local source and performance checks.
Recurring 24/7 prerecorded streams: choose an operating model
If this is a continuous YouTube broadcast rather than an occasional scheduled stream, decide whether you want to maintain a local computer and OBS setup or use a cloud service. A cloud service changes where playback runs; it does not prove that your home internet bottleneck has been repaired. YouTube’s encoder list includes Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streams and notes its built-in file converter. Check the service’s current details before choosing it.
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded YouTube playback, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; the first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.

Common symptoms and what to try
| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| OBS network dropped frames increase; preview is smooth | Upload capacity, bitrate, or connection stability | Check upload headroom, lower bitrate, test wired Ethernet, and inspect VPN, security/network software, and network equipment. |
| Preview is choppy before sending | Media source, scene rendering, CPU/GPU resources | Test the actual file and scene, close GPU-heavy applications, and reduce unnecessary scene or source resolution load. |
| Drops happen when other devices are active | Shared upload bandwidth | Pause competing traffic for a test and set bitrate for realistic shared conditions. |
| Dynamic bitrate reduces drops but image quality falls | Connection congestion remains unresolved | Treat dynamic bitrate as a fallback; address available upload capacity or the underlying network issue. |
| OBS remains unstable after local network checks | ISP, modem/router, cable, network card, or other equipment | Check the physical path and contact your ISP if the issue persists. |
YouTube Live rules that matter for prerecorded video
Solving dropped frames only addresses delivery and playback quality; it does not establish that you have the right to broadcast a video. Before streaming a documentary or other prerecorded material, confirm that you hold the necessary rights or permission for the video, music, and other included material, and follow YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies. YouTube may assess reused content separately from copyright permission, so permission alone does not guarantee monetization eligibility. Review the current rules in YouTube Help before scheduling a stream.
