How to Fix Dropped Frames in OBS When Streaming a Video Playlist to YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First check which OBS counter is rising: network dropped frames, rendering lag, or encoding lag. They can all make a YouTube playlist stream look choppy, but they point to different problems. Network drops usually call for a more stable upload path or a lower bitrate; rendering or encoding lag calls for reducing the work OBS and your computer are doing.

A playlist is not, by itself, proof of a network problem. Use OBS Stats during a representative section of playback, then follow the matching fix below.

1. Identify what is dropping in OBS

Check Stats during playback

  1. Start the YouTube stream and play a representative part of the playlist, including typical motion and audio.
  2. In OBS, open View > Stats.
  3. Watch the network dropped-frames count, rendering lag, and encoding lag. Note which count increases while the problem occurs.

OBS Project defines network dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Rendering and encoding lag are separate performance problems. A stream can look choppy in either case, so do not treat every OBS counter as a network fault.

  • Network dropped frames rise: investigate the OBS-to-YouTube upload path and bitrate.
  • Rendering lag rises: OBS is struggling to composite and render the scene on the GPU.
  • Encoding lag rises: the computer is not encoding frames quickly enough with the selected settings.
  • All OBS counters stay low: check playlist playback and YouTube viewer playback separately.

OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting page describes connection causes; its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide covers system performance.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. If network dropped frames are increasing

Set a bitrate your upload can sustain

Lower OBS’s video bitrate in the streaming output settings, then test again. The right value depends on the output codec, resolution, frame rate, and—most importantly—a stable upload connection. Do not choose a universal bitrate based only on a speed test’s peak result: leave room for normal variation and other upload traffic.

YouTube’s published encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, gives the following recommended and minimum video bitrates. These are platform targets, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain them. The YouTube page has no visible publication date in the accessed view, and its recommendations can change.

For 720p and lower modes, consult YouTube’s full live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table rather than extrapolating from these rows. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It also recommends RTMPS; Live Control Room detects encoder settings automatically by default and transcodes the incoming stream for viewer formats.

Test the network path

  • If the streaming computer is on Wi-Fi, test a wired Ethernet connection. A cable can help distinguish wireless instability from other upload problems.
  • Temporarily test without a VPN, and check whether firewall or security software is interfering with OBS’s connection.
  • Look for vendor network-priority or traffic-management software that may limit or interrupt OBS.
  • Check network drivers, router or modem behavior, and whether other upload activity or ISP congestion coincides with the drops.
  • As a diagnostic comparison, test a different streaming service if practical. A difference can help locate a service-specific routing issue, but it does not itself repair the route to YouTube.

OBS also documents network optimization and TCP pacing options for Windows. These are not universal fixes. Dynamic bitrate can lower quality to keep a congested stream going, but it is a fallback that trades fidelity for continuity, not a repair for the underlying network path. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide for its current options.

3. If rendering or encoding lag is increasing

Reduce the workload before changing hardware

OBS Project notes that OBS needs GPU time and resources to composite and render a scene. Reduce the work in small steps, then watch Stats again:

  • Lower the output resolution, or reduce the frame rate. OBS suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working reliably.
  • Simplify the scene: remove sources you do not need and disable expensive filters as a test.
  • Close other applications that are using the GPU heavily.
  • If a source file is much larger in resolution than the stream, consider using a more appropriately sized media file.
  • For an individual Media Source, test its hardware decoding option if the GPU supports it. Results depend on the file and computer; it is not guaranteed to improve performance.

Lower resolution or frame rate can reduce detail or motion smoothness. Change one setting at a time so you can identify what actually improves the counters. The OBS performance guide explains rendering and encoding remedies.

4. Confirm the playlist source is configured correctly

Use VLC Video for a playlist

OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. The source provides loop, shuffle, visibility, and network-caching controls. Check that the source is visible in the active scene and that loop or shuffle is set the way you intend.

Media Source is for individual supported media files, rather than a playlist. It includes a hardware-decoding option for supported GPUs. OBS documents these source differences in Media Sources.

If playlist entries are local files, playback or decoding load may contribute to rendering or encoding strain. If they are network URLs, there are two separate connections to consider: the media source’s connection to retrieve the video and OBS’s upload connection to YouTube. VLC Video exposes network caching, but OBS does not prescribe a universal cache value for local-file playlists. Avoid changing it blindly; investigate whether playback itself pauses or buffers.

5. Check YouTube stream health and viewer playback separately

When OBS’s counters are stable, look at YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health while the test is running. Use a test with audio and motion similar to the real playlist; a static opening card is not a representative load. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing under similar conditions and monitoring stream health.

Also distinguish a sender-side fault from viewer buffering. OBS’s network counter measures the sending connection, while a viewer may experience playback trouble because of their own connection or congestion. YouTube’s computer streaming and video troubleshooting guidance addresses viewer-side playback issues. A viewer’s report of buffering alone does not establish that OBS is dropping frames.

6. Troubleshooting by symptom

What you observe Likely area to check First useful action
OBS network dropped-frames count rises Upload stability or bitrate Lower bitrate, test Ethernet, and check VPN, security software, network tools, router/modem, and ISP conditions.
Rendering lag rises, but network drops remain low Scene compositing or GPU load Simplify the scene, lower resolution or frame rate, and close GPU-heavy applications.
Encoding lag rises, but network drops remain low Encoding workload or output settings Reduce output demands and retest; use the OBS performance guide to narrow the bottleneck.
Video playback pauses but OBS sending counters stay low Playlist source or media retrieval Check VLC installation and architecture, playlist entries, source visibility, and whether files are local or remote.
OBS looks healthy, but a viewer buffers Viewer connection or playback path Check YouTube stream health and compare with playback on another connection or device.

No single bitrate, encoder preset, or guaranteed fix can be selected without knowing your OBS counters, output mode, media files, network conditions, and YouTube stream-health report. Use the counter that rises to choose the branch, and verify changes with a representative test.
