Reduce the stream bitrate if the upload path cannot sustain it, test over wired Ethernet, and compare OBS’s statistics with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. The right fix depends on where the connection becomes unstable; no single setting or equipment upgrade is guaranteed to solve it.
First identify which frames are being lost
OBS reports different problems in different counters. An increasing network-dropped-frame count points to the connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate the connection cannot reliably sustain. It does not, by itself, show that the encoder computer is too slow. Rendering or encoding lag is a separate diagnostic path.
When the count starts rising, note the time, dropped-frame percentage, bitrate shown in OBS, and whether the stream recovers or disconnects. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide says OBS itself is extremely unlikely to cause this category of dropped frames.
At the same time, check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. The OBS counter shows what is happening from the encoder’s perspective; YouTube’s health messages can flag ingestion or configuration concerns. Neither view alone identifies every fault along the route from the church to YouTube.

Lower the bitrate to test the connection
A download-speed result is not a useful substitute for stable upload capacity. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate heuristic, not a guarantee for an uninterrupted service. Real upload capacity can vary, and other church traffic also needs room. Leave headroom, then validate with a representative test.
YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations provide a platform reference, not a requirement to choose the highest quality your equipment offers:

These are YouTube recommendations; the church’s upload path still has to carry the selected stream reliably. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its format guidance, including separate figures for H.265 and AV1.

- In OBS, lower the video bitrate and run a private or otherwise non-public test if your church workflow allows it.
- Keep the test running long enough to resemble the part of the service when the problem usually appears.
- Compare the network-dropped-frame counter and YouTube stream health with the original setting.
If a lower bitrate stabilizes the stream, the path may not reliably sustain the original setting. That result alone does not tell you whether the cause is Wi-Fi, competing local traffic, a device fault, congestion, or the ISP route. If needed, reduce resolution or frame rate as well as bitrate to make the stream easier to carry.
Remove common sources of network variability
Test with wired Ethernet
If the encoder is on Wi-Fi, connect it to the router by Ethernet for a test. OBS recommends wired networking for streaming; Wi-Fi instability can cause intermittent trouble even when a speed test looks adequate. Pause avoidable upload-heavy activity, such as cloud backups or large file transfers, during the test.
Check software and network settings
OBS identifies VPNs, security software, outdated network drivers, and traffic “optimizer” or prioritization software as possible contributors. Check whether any software is deprioritizing OBS, and change one factor at a time so you can tell what helped.

In OBS, confirm Bind to IP is set to Default. OBS suggests testing IPv4 Only; if that makes no difference, return to IPv4 and IPv6. On Windows, OBS also lists Network Optimizations and TCP pacing as options some users report help. Treat them as experiments, not guaranteed fixes.
Dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce bitrate during congestion, but it does not repair the underlying connection and may lower picture quality. Consider it a fallback when continuity matters more than maintaining a fixed bitrate.

Trace the connection from the streaming computer to the modem and router. Depending on the installation, it may pass through a network interface, wall jack, switch, powerline adapter, extender, cable, router, or modem. OBS lists these components as possible sources of a fault.

- Try a known-good Ethernet cable or connect directly to the router where practical.
- Test one component at a time; changing several at once can hide the cause.
- If you are unsure whether a device is faulty, ask the ISP before buying replacement hardware.
A wired test or cable replacement is a troubleshooting step, not a universal cure. If symptoms persist, the fault may be elsewhere on the local network or route.

For standard YouTube RTMP/RTMPS streaming, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds that must not exceed 4 seconds. Check OBS’s output settings against the format you use and look for bitrate, frame-rate, or keyframe warnings in Live Control Room.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes videoIngestionStarved as a condition where “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.” That points to an ingestion shortage, but it does not on its own identify whether the cause is the encoder configuration or the connection along the route. The API can also flag mismatched properties between primary and backup feeds, including resolution, bitrate, frame rate, codec, audio settings, or keyframe frequency. Before the next service, test with movement and audio resembling the real broadcast rather than a static desktop. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, then monitoring stream health during the event. Save the OBS log and note the time of any health warning so volunteers or the ISP can compare evidence across services.
When to contact the ISP
Escalate if dropped frames continue over wired Ethernet at a bitrate below the stable upload capacity you measured, after checking local software and equipment. OBS notes that provider-side congestion or route issues may be outside the operator’s control. Give the ISP a concise record of:
- When the problem began and how long it lasted
- OBS bitrate and dropped-frame percentage
- Whether the stream recovered or disconnected
- Whether other internet services remained available
- Any YouTube ingestion or configuration messages
- Which tests you ran, such as a lower bitrate or direct wired connection
Changing a bitrate, router, or internet plan may be worth testing when evidence points that way, but none is a guaranteed fix without locating the fault.
