First determine whether FFmpeg or the video source failed, or whether the broadband path to YouTube dropped. Check FFmpeg’s error output, a local recording, CPU load and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages before changing settings. If the local output is healthy but the outbound connection is not, troubleshoot the internet connection with your ISP; reconnect flags and YouTube’s backup ingest address cannot restore a broadband path that is down.
Diagnose the failure before changing FFmpeg settings
A stream interruption can originate with the input, encoder, YouTube ingest configuration or internet connection. Identify the failing layer first; otherwise, changing bitrate or adding reconnect flags may not address the cause.
Capture useful evidence safely
- Record the time of the interruption, the FFmpeg version and build information, and the relevant end of FFmpeg’s output.
- Note whether FFmpeg exited, remained running but stopped sending, or continued producing output.
- Check whether the source and any local recording remain healthy, and whether CPU load is unusually high.
- Review YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages for errors or warnings.
- Redact the YouTube stream key from commands, logs and screenshots before sharing them. Anyone with the key may be able to use it to publish to your stream.
These observations help distinguish an encoder or source problem from an outbound connectivity problem. YouTube recommends checking the encoder, CPU load, dashboard errors and a local archive; when the encoder looks healthy, test the internet connection. YouTube says, “If you find issues with your Internet connection, contact your Internet service provider to troubleshoot.” YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance gives the connection-test advice.
Check whether FFmpeg can reconnect in your actual setup
FFmpeg documents protocol-level retry options, including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries and reconnect_delay_total_max. Their availability and effect depend on the protocol and the installed FFmpeg build. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation and run ffmpeg -h for the relevant options in your build.

Do not assume these options make an RTMP live output resume cleanly after an ISP outage. A retry while opening or retrieving a network resource is not the same as recovering a YouTube publishing session. Check whether an option applies to your input or output, and test its behavior with your actual protocol and build.
If FFmpeg exits
A process supervisor can restart FFmpeg after it exits, but restarting does not guarantee that the existing YouTube live session will resume as intended. Test the full restart path in advance, including what YouTube shows after reconnection. Avoid a setup that launches a second process while the first is still publishing; duplicate or competing sessions can create a new problem instead of recovering the original stream.

Choose encoding settings from measured upload capacity
Use the upload connection you actually have, rather than assuming there is a universal bitrate for Indian broadband. Test sustained upload capacity and run a representative preflight with the same kind of movement and audio as the planned broadcast. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
YouTube’s encoder settings page, accessed 2026-10-03, lists codec-, resolution- and frame-rate-specific bitrate recommendations. For H.264, it gives 3 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended at 1080p30; at 1080p60, it gives 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are encoder-setting recommendations, not measurements of Indian ISP performance or guarantees of a stable connection. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings for the format you intend to use.

- Select a codec, resolution and frame rate that suit your material and are supported by your sustained upload capacity.
- Leave practical headroom for upload variability and other household traffic; this is a planning precaution, not a fixed margin published by YouTube.
- Monitor stream health during the preflight and after going live. Lowering bitrate may help when the connection is struggling to sustain the chosen settings, but it cannot fix an ISP outage that removes the connection entirely.
Know what YouTube backup ingest can—and cannot—recover
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents primary and backup ingestion addresses for supported ingest protocols and allows the same content to be sent to the backup address. This provides an alternative ingest destination; it does not create a second internet connection from your location. If your broadband path is unavailable, neither destination can receive your stream through that path. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
For failover to work, YouTube requires the primary and backup streams to have matching settings. Its guidance says, “Your primary and backup streams must have the exact same settings for failover to work properly.” The relevant settings include resolution, video and audio codecs, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe frequency and audio parameters. Verify these together before relying on a backup stream, using YouTube’s live error and failover guidance.

Use an alternate internet path only if it is genuinely available
A separately routed mobile-data or other internet service may help if the primary ISP route fails and the alternate connection remains available. Whether it will work depends on local coverage, power, data allowance and how independent the alternate provider’s infrastructure is. Those conditions vary by location; no single provider or device can be recommended without checking coverage for the exact place where you stream.
Test the alternate connection’s sustained upload capacity and the complete FFmpeg-to-YouTube publishing path before depending on it. A second ingest address is not an alternate internet path, and a power backup alone will not restore a failed broadband connection.
